In the United States, 1 out of 5 students ages 12-18 have been bullied during the school
year. Bullying is defined as “a repeated aggressive behavior where one person (or group of
people) in a position of power deliberately intimidates, abuses, or coerces an individual with the
intention to hurt that person physically or emotionally.” Let’s take a look at the bolded words
again...Intentional - the behavior was aggressive and the individual had a deliberate attempt to
hurt another person, Repeated - these actions occur repeatedly (over and over again) over time to
It is important to take bullying seriously and not brush it off as “kids being kids” or “it’s a
part of life.” Bullying takes an emotional toll upon the child being bullied day after day and can
Take a moment to think about it and put yourself in the victims shoes. You go to school
everyday thinking it is your safe place but instead get verbally picked on everyday by the same
student. It happened once, so you ignored it but you hear it day after day...different comments
about how you look or how you dress. Then they start attacking your physical appearance,
something that you don’t have control of. Instead of being excited to go to school, you are now
afraid or embarrassed going to school. You start covering up more physically and start talking
less so that people just don’t notice you. Unfortunately, that victim was actually me in
elementary school in the third grade. I still remember how I felt being bullied as a child and I

There are many different types of bullying that can be experienced by children in
classrooms, in their schools or outside of school, some are obvious to spot while others can be
more subtle. The different types of bullying seen in schools include physical bullying, verbal
“Physical bullying includes hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching and pushing or damaging
property. Physical bullying causes both short term and long term damage.”
“Verbal bulling includes name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation, homophobic or racist
remarks, or verbal abuse. While verbal bullying can start off harmless, it can escalate to levels
which start affecting the individual target.” This form of bullying is seen most often and starts at
a young age.
Social bullying is harder to recognise and can be carried out behind the bullied person’s
The Cyberbullying Research Centre defines cyber bullying as: Intentional and repeated
harm inflicted through the use of computers, phones, and other electronic devices. This is a form
of bullying that is growing rapidly since it makes for an “easy target.” Because this type of
bullying is done behind a digital platform/device, it can happen at any time. It can be public for
the world to see or private between the bully and the victim. It can include things such as hurtful

Bullying is a serious and on-going problem and it is our job as educators to have a
consistent effort to keep it away from our schools. Many schools bring in a speaker to raise
awareness or have anti-bullying assemblies but this is just a short-term fix. Students fix their
behavior for a week but then go back to their old ways. Schools have to have policies in place
and enforced rules and consequences for the ones who are bullying others. Bullying is a tough
issue to tackle, with consistent and united efforts by everyone in the building, including students,
it can be stopped.
