Junior Cycle: History Year 2


CBA 1 – The Past in My Place
3 weeks – 22nd February – 12th March

Your CBA1 is a structured, evidence-based enquiry into a historical aspect or theme


relating to your locality, place or personal/family history. You will work individually
and present your research in the form of a display, of the type that you might see in a
museum, heritage centre or library. Your display will include information from
different sources in the form of text, pictures, graphs, maps, drawings, timelines, etc.

As you complete your CBA1 you will engage in a four stage process:
Stage 1: Investigating
Stage 2: Discovering
Stage 3: Displaying
Stage 4: Reflecting

As you complete your CBA you need to keep the following learning outcomes in mind:

• Make a connection between your chosen local topic and the wider world
• Develop a sense of historical empathy with your topic (what it would feel like to be
there at that time or be that person)
• If your topic is controversial, view it from more than one perspective (point of view)
• Show an appreciation of your cultural inheritance by recognising how historically
significant your chosen topic is
• Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the following: sources, evidence,
fact, opinion, viewpoint, objectivity, cause, consequence, change, time and space.
• Take on the role of the historian
• Learn to investigate different types of sources – primary and secondary - Identify how
useful different types of sources are
• Demonstrate an awareness of the significance of Irish and European history and the
wider world
• Create timelines – events, people, issues.
• Make connections and comparisons between people, issues and events.

You will do most of this automatically while you are completing your CBA as you move
through the four stages.

You need to create a list of questions that you would like to find the answers to during
your research. These will help steer your investigation. You might need to do some general
background reading on your topic to help you with your list of questions. This is about what
you actually want to discover or find out about your topic. They will also help ypu structure
your display.

Stage 2: Discovering
This is where you find the answers to the questions that you listed in Stage 1. In this stage
you will:
• examine different types of sources that are relevant to your chosen topic. Remember
you need three different types of source, e.g. photographs, letters, newspapers,
website, book, etc.
• you may examine relevant archival records. These include census records (access
online), birth records, etc.
• a visit to local heritage centre/museum/library, etc.
• a visit to a relevant site, e.g. building, site of event, memorial, etc.
• Consult local history books, journals, newspapers, etc.
• Look at general history books
• Visit relevant webistes
• Interview a local person o historian with information about your chosen topic
• Interview a local person with memories about the local area and your chosen topic
Depending on your topic it may not be possible to complete all of the above which is fine.
You need to use three different sources when finding the answers to your questions.
