Blended Learning Lesson Plan

This blended learning lesson plan teaches 2nd grade students about animal classifications. It begins with introducing the lesson and having students work with partners to learn about vertebrate groups through a slideshow and song. Students then collaborate in groups online to research and describe a species. Working independently, students watch an explanatory video and complete a digital sorting activity. The lesson concludes with a Kahoot review game to assess learning. Multimedia like YouTube videos and Kahoot are used to keep students engaged while meeting state standards.

Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: What makes this animal unique?

Objectives:
- Students will be able to differentiate animals based on their physical characteristics
- Students will be able to identify the different animal classifications and species
State Standards:
- 2.L.5A.1 Obtain and communicate information to classify animals (such as mammals,
birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, or insects) based on their physical characteristics.
Context:
This lesson is to teach students that not all animals fall under the same category and what
to look for to classify the animal. This unit is about animals, animal relationships and habitats.
Before students learn about the different types of animals they will learn about different habitats.
The knowledge of habitats will help them understand where the different animals live and why
they live there. In this lesson students will determine the physical attributes that determines their
species and groups they belong. In this lesson their knowledge of animal groups will set them up
to figure out what animals are omnivores, carnivores and herbivores in the upcoming lesson. The
next lesson they will learn about the food web and what animals are prey and what are predators
in their habitats.
Data:
For this lesson the students will be partnered up using their clock buddies. This system
was created at the beginning of the year where they all had to find a partner and write their name
down on a sheet with a clock on it so they will work with 12 different people during class
throughout the year. I use this method in my class so that I can see how the students work with
different people and work on their social skills because they will not always be paired with
someone, they are good friends with. In a special education classroom this is important because
many of the students have disabilities that effect their social skills, such as autism. Being able to
see who works well together and who doesn’t will give me data on how to do groupings for
when they are in larger groups that don’t require the clock buddies chart. From this I can also use
the information on who works well together when I change seating assignments in the classroom.

Closure

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures:
Introduction (10 min):
This lesson starts after their lunch period has ended. When the students come to class,

they will come into to class and take a seat at their assigned table. Once the students have taken a

seat, they will pull put last night’s homework for me to come around and collect to be graded.

After all their homework has been collected, I will begin to explain today’s lesson. On the smart

board there will be the lessons title “What makes this animal unique?” The brief explanation will

lead into my teacher directed potion of the lesson.

Teacher Directed (20 min):

To start the teacher directed section, the students will start by pulling out their Clock

Buddies sheet to find their 5 o’clock buddies and sit next to each other for the rest of class. Now

that they have found their partners, I will hand out the premade note sheet for them to fill in

while I give them information. The sheets are for the students to keep in their science class

folders. I will begin my slideshow to explain to the students the major vertebrate animal

classifications. During the slideshow I will play a short video on YouTube called Animal

Classifications: The Vertebrates Songs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9ptHAClC4Q )

which is created by the channel Hopscotch.

Collaborative (15 min):
After the slideshow ends, I will ask the students to take out their school issued iPad and I

will assign each group a vertebrate to choose a species from. Online they will choose an animal

from their assigned types to research they will go to https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/animals

to find their information. On a blank piece of paper, the students will write their chosen animal

on the top of the page and together they will write out the physical characteristics of the animal

and what their diet consists of. They will need to draw an image of the animal too and these will

be hung up on the wall until the unit is over.

Independent Digital (20 min):

For the independent digital section of this lesson the students will stay on their iPad, but

no longer work with their clock buddy. On our class google classroom they will find a link to a

video and game to play. The video explains vertebrates, it is an 8-minute video from YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQdiSMUZEDA . When the student has completed they

will go back onto google classroom to complete an activity on

https://www.sheppardsoftware.com/science/animals/games/animal-characteristics/ to help with

their memorization of what the physical characteristics of the types of animals are. This sorting

activity should take around 10 minutes to complete for the 2nd graders. Once they are finished

with both activities, they should wait for further instructions for our class closing activity.

Closure (10 min):

To close out this class we will all participate in a class kahoot to see how much they have

learned from this class. This kahoot has 15 questions containing random questions that should be

easy for the students to answer in the allotted time they are given. The winner of this kahoot will

get to put a star next to their name on the Kahoot winners bulletin board. With 3 minutes left of
class announcements will be given that pertain to science and the students will return to their

assigned seat.

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
(Youtube): The first multimedia I utilized in my lesson plan is YouTube. This website is

great for classes because there are so many different videos on there to assist with the

lesson plan for all grade levels. This supports the students because they can get the

information in an entertaining way such as songs and cartoons to keep young students

engaged.? To make sure the videos I am choosing are high quality I use videos from

well-known channels with positive reviews This website is a great tool and fits many of

the required LORI criteria for multimedia. It is an easy tool to use and makes it easy to

absorb information. As for assistive technologies this website puts captions on their

videos when needed for the viewer.

(Kahoot): Using Kahoot as a tool to gage how students have understood the lesson at the

end of class makes it fun for them and gives you the data you need. Kahoot supports my

students by measuring their memorization skills and making it a challenge by putting

each question on a time limit. With this application they can show how much they have

learned during class about the certain standards that are being met. From online rating

and word of mouth, Kahoot is a high-quality website to quiz students, according to LORI

criteria, Kahoot is rated an overall 7.5 with their efficiency and design rated very high

and the functionality being an average rating. For students that may be special ed and

need more time, it can be adjusted by the teachers. There are unfortunately not many

other options to help students if they have any other disabilities thought.
