Question One (16 marks)
a. Given 𝑟1 = 3𝑖 − 2𝑗 + 𝑘, 𝑟2 = 2𝑖 − 4𝑗 − 3𝑘, 𝑟3 = −𝑖 + 2𝑗 + 2𝑘, find the
magnitude of:
i. 𝑟1 + 𝑟2 + 𝑟3 (2 marks)
ii. 2𝑟1 − 3𝑟2 − 5𝑟3 (3 marks)
b. If 𝑟1 = 2𝑖 − 𝑗 + 𝑘, 𝑟2 = 𝑖 + 3𝑗 − 2𝑘, 𝑟3 = −2𝑖 + 𝑗 − 3𝑘, and 𝑟4 = 3𝑖 + 2𝑗 +

d. Determine a unit vector perpendicular to the plane of 𝐴 = 2𝑖 − 6𝑗 − 3𝑘 and

b. For the space curve 𝑥 = cos(𝑡) + 𝑡𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑡), 𝑦 = sin(𝑡) − 𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑡), 𝑧 = 𝑡 2 , 𝑡 > 0.


Find the;
i. Unit tangent vector (2 marks)

a. Find the unit tangent vector to any point on the curve 𝑥 = 𝑡 2 + 1, 𝑦 = 4𝑡 −
3, 𝑧 = 2𝑡 2 − 6𝑡. Determine also the unit tangent at the point where t = 2.

b. If 𝐶1 and 𝐶2 are constant vectors and 𝜆 is a constant scalar, show that 𝐻 =
𝑒 −𝜆𝑥 (𝐶1 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜆𝑦 + 𝐶2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜆𝑦) satisfies the partial differential equation. (5 marks)

ii. The straight lines from (0,0,0) to (1,1,1), then to (1,1,0), and then to

b. Find the total work done in moving a particle in a force field given by 𝐹 =
