Implant Assisted RPD Overview

The document discusses implant-assisted removable partial dentures (RPDs). It notes that implants can improve support, retention, comfort and esthetics for RPDs compared to conventional RPDs. While fixed restorations are often preferred, implant-assisted RPDs offer benefits like being more conservative, requiring fewer implants that are shorter and thinner. Implants can eliminate or reduce clasping and increase stability for RPDs. The document provides examples of treatment planning, surgical placement of implants, and final restored smiles using implant-assisted RPDs.

Implant Assisted RPD

Dr. Bryan T. Harris
Terminology

-The terms implant-retained and implant

supported are inadequate and imply that the
prosthesis
is retained or supported solely by the
implants.
-Implant-assisted removable partial dentures
are also
supported by natural teeth and/or soft tissues;
retention may also involve conventional
clasping systems.
-Implants can offer many benefits for
removable dental prostheses, including
improved support, retention, comfort, and
esthetics
-Implants also can result in increased patient
satisfaction and therapeutic success.
Fixed vs. Removable

-Fixed dental prostheses, retained by

teeth or dental implants, are considered
by patients and dentists to be the ideal
treatment modality whenever possible.
-This is due to the inherently stable
nature of fixed restorations and
perceived problems with conventional
removable partial dentures.
-Despite this preference, the use of
implant supported fixed partial
dentures is not always the best method
for replacement of missing teeth.

Implant Assisted RPD

-Many of the problems associated with conventional removable partial dentures can be overcome with
the proper placement and use of one or more implants.
-Such therapy can result in exceptionally stable, retentive, and esthetic restorations that are
biomechanically sound and readily maintained. As a result, implant-assisted removable partial dentures
may represent the treatment of choice in many clinical situations.
