The document provides information about dividing a triangular lot ABC into two sections. The lot has an area of 300,000 sq. m. Line AB is 800m long and line CA is 960m long. The lot must be divided such that section APO has an area that is 1/4 of the total area. Point O is on line AB and point P is on line CA. Point P is 600m from point A. Calculations show that the distance from point A to point O is 320m and the length of dividing line PO is 471.91m.

ELABORATE:
A triangular lot ABC has a bearing and distance of line AB to be N 40deg E and 800m
and CA equal to 960m long. The lot is to be divided such that the area of APO is only 1⁄4
of the area of ABC. Point O is along the line AB and point P is along the line CA.
Compute the distance AO and the dividing line PO. The area of triangle ABC is 300, 000
sq. m. AP is equal to 600m long.

A.
Area of triangle ABC= 300000sq.m
Length of AB=800m
Length of CA=960m
Length of AP=600m

Area of triangle APO = 1/4 (Area of triangle ABC)

Area of triangle APO = ¼(300000)
Area of triangle APO = 75000sq.m

B.
Area of triangle = ½ x (product of adjacent sides)
Area of triangle ABC = ½ x (800 x 960) x sinA
300000 = ½ x(800 x 960) x sin A
= 51°22’30”

C.
Area of triangle AP0 = ½ x ( AP) x (AO) sinA
75000 = ½ x 600 x AO x sin(51°22’30”)
AO = 320m

2 2 2 2 2 2
𝐴𝑃 + 𝐴𝑂 − 𝑃𝑂 600 +320 −𝑃𝑂
Cos A = 2(𝐴𝑃)(𝐴𝑂)
= cos(51°22’30”) = 2(600)(320)
PO = 471.91

EVALUATE:
Research the following:
a) Reconnaissance:The reconnaissance survey is an extensive study of an entire area that
might be used for a road or airfield. Its purpose is to eliminate those routes or sites which are
impractical or unfeasible and to identify the more promising routes or sites

b) Baselines measurement:In surveying, a baseline is a line between two points on the earth's
surface and the direction and distance between them. In a triangulation network, at least one
baseline between two stations needs to be measured to calculate the size of the triangles by
trigonometry

REFERENCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseline_(surveying)

c) Signals and Towers Erection:A signal is a device erected to define the exact position of a
triangulation station so that it can be observed from other stations
Signals – Requirement
(i) It should be clearly visible, kept at least 75 cm above the station mark.
(ii) Capable of being accurately centered over the station mark.
(iii) It should be suitable for accurate bisection from other stations.

d) Angle Measurement:A critical component to the surveying process is the measurement of

angles. Initially compasses assisted surveyors to define their direction, putting the survey on a
magnetic meridian. Theodolites were developed to allow more accurate measurement of angles
both in the horizontal and vertical plane.

e) Astronomic Checks:are surveys made to determine the latitude, longitude and azimuth from
observations to the stars.
