Example 1: Attack On Titan by Hajime Isayama

Attack On Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) is a post-apocalyptic, fantasy manga revolving around the
life on Eren Jaegar who, after his mother’s death, joins the survey corps and sets out to annihilate
giant Titans who have been threatening the earth and devouring humans on earth.
Example 2: Fruit Basket by Natsuki Takaya

The comedy, romance and fantasy manga “Fruits Basket” is about an orphaned Tohru Honda
who is taken in by the family of her classmate, the Sohmas. She soon finds out the family secret:
members transform into one of the 12 animals of the chinese zodiac in certain situations, leading
to many humorous adventures throughout the series.
Example 3: Death Note by Ohba Tsugumi and Obata Takeshi

Death Note is a psychological thriller and deals with elements of the supernatural. The
extraordinary schoolboy Yagami Light’s quest for adventure led him to picking up a mysterious
black book that fell from the sky. He soon learns that the book is a “Death Note” owned by
Ryuk, a death god, and has the ability to kill any person whose name is written inside within 40
seconds. Light decides to play god and rid the world of evil, useless humans; however, with
genius detective “L” inspecting the various deaths, he faces roadblocks.
Characteristics of a Manga

Right to Left Reading


Manga are generally written to be read from the top right most panel on the page to the bottom
left panel, including text. This mimics the tradition Japanese writing style and reflects Japan’s
history and culture through this literature

Font
The fonts used in manga’s are usually ones that are similar to a person’s handwriting, making it
easy on the eyes to read and allowing the reader relate to and enjoy the story even more.

Colour
Most manga’s illustrations and panels are black and white. Since it’s often only one artist
working on the illustrations, it's more efficient for the illustrator.

Genres
Manga have their own genres, aside from the usual types such as comedy or horror. The two
most common are Shojo and Shonen. Shojo manga are catered towards teenage girls and deal
with themes like romance and are usually from a female point of view. Shonen manga are made
for teenage boys. These manga are action packed and revolve around adventure

Exaggeration in Text
Manga characters are often portrayed as very eccentric and over the top. Along with the
emphasized facial expressions, the font, text bubble shapes, and shading of panels can add more
dramatic and emotional value to the artwork and story.
In Fonts : Shaky text = Horror or worry
Larger text = Yelling or screaming
Droopy text = Disappointment
In Text Bubbles : Sharp, boxy bubble = Shock or yelling
Broken bubble = Whispering or muttering
In Panel Shading : Darker shading = suspense, horror, seriousness

Exaggeration in Illustration
Manga artists use specific drawing tactics to bring life to their drawing, these little details are
exclusive to manga and add to a character’s personality. These details are essentially emotions
that the character feels and not necessarily shows, however these expressions are still drawn or
portrayed to dramatize the situation.
Ex. Waterfall-like tears streaking down character’s face
Vein popping out of character’s forehead to show anger
“Raindrop” near head indicating disbelief or confusion
