FREE FALL

PURPOSE
1. To determine the functional relationship between height and time of free fall (h=h(t)).
2. To study the motion of a freely falling body and to determine the acceleration of
gravity by using sensitive devices.

THEORY
If a body of mass m is accelerated from the state of rest in a constant gravitational
field (gravitational force mg ), it performs a linear movement. By applying the coordinate
system in a way that the x axis indicates the direction of motion, and solving the
corresponding one dimensional equation of motion, we get:

d 2 h(t )
m = mg
dt 2

For the initial conditions we obtain

dh(0)
h(0) = 0 ; =0
dt

and the coordinate h is given as a function of time as below

1 2
h(t ) = gt

SET-UP

Figure.1: Experimental set-up for freefall

1. The setup is shown in Figure1. An electrically conducting sphere is gripped in the

release mechanism which closes the start circuit.
2. The pan is adjusted, using the adjusting screw under the arrest switch, so that a
downward movement of a few tenths of a millimeter closes the stop circuit. The pan is
raised by hand after each test.

PROCEDURE & REPORT

1. (10 points) According to the table which is given below, measure the times for the
heights and calculate square of the time values.

h t
t2
(meter) (Seconds)

31
2. (10 points) Plot the h = f (t ) graph.

3. (20 points) Plot the h = f (t 2 ) graph and find gravitational acceleration from this
graph.
4. (10 points) Take exact value of gravitational acceleration is 9.81 m/s 2, then calculate
the experimental value of g.

RESULTS & QUESTIONS

(20 Points)
1. What are the possible source of errors in this experiment ?
2. Why does a body fall down to the earth? What is the net force which affects the body?
3. A ball is thrown directly downward with an initial speed of 8.00 m/s from a height of
30.0 m. After what time interval does it strike the ground?
