TS 204.2.7.1 state that Geotechnical Investigation be performed to determine the
suitability or otherwise of the soil or rock to support the foundations of the bridge or
other structure and also to determine soil parameters and rock characteristics required
for the design of foundations by in situ testing or testing of samples/cores taken from
bores/drill holes.
In TS 204.2.7.4 the Geotechnical Investigation Report shall be prepared by the
Contractor and submitted to the Engineer for approval.
The purpose is for the Engineer to be able to decide if the design bored pile length is
adequate or needs re-evalauation.
Should have at least 3 consecutive N- The last 3 SPT N- value for BH-Pile
value of ≥ 50. Test (P-877) are 102, 92 and 93.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
As part of the preliminary engineering requirement of the project, DBAdsuara
Engineering Consultancy (DBAEC) was hired to conduct geotechnical
investigation in order to ensure a rational, safe and economical design and
construction of the North-South Commuter Railway-Expressway. The data
obtained will define the stratigraphy and engineering properties of the soils
underlying the site, particularly the strength and deformation characteristics of
the soil, strata, the soil bearing capacity, groundwater and surface drainage
conditions among others which shall then be used to determine the appropriate
foundation scheme for the proposed structure.
may be expected.
And we quote, “Damortis Formation consists of westward dipping sandstones,
calcarenites, siltstones and marl. It rests unconformably over the
Cataguintingan Formation near the type locality. This gently dipping sequence
of clastic rocks commonly contains molluscan fossils. In some places the
sandstones are dark colored due to the presence of heavy minerals. Tamesis
and others (1981) estimate the thickness of the formation to range from 50m
to 200m on the basis of seismic data.
Bamban Formation designates the tuffaceous clastic and tuff section in
Bamban, Tarlac by Corby and others (1951). The basal conglomerate is
massive, fairly well-consolidated, and consists of poorly sorted subangular to
subrounded pebbles, cobbles and small boulders of diorite, andesite and basalt
with minor amounts of scoria cemented by tuffaceous sand and volcanic ash.
It is locally cross-bedded and grades laterally and vertically to the sandstone.
Page | 1
8
North South Commuter Railway Extension Project CP N-03
The sandstone is bedded, fine to coarse grained, fairly sorted, soft, porous,
tuffaceous and consists mainly of angular to subrounded grains of feldspar,
quartz and ferro-magnesian minerals in a fine silt and volcanic ash cement.
Interbedded with the sandstone are thin beds of hard, well cemented and brittle
tuffaceous shale. The tuff is medium to thick bedded, hard, brittle and consists
of well cemented, fine volcanic ash, dust and lapilli. Mafic minerals and small
fragments of scoriaceous materials are dispersed in the tuff.
Cataguintingan Formation consists mainly of tuffaceous sandstones
interbedded with siltstones, shales and conglomerates including minor
limestone lenses. It rests unconformably over the Amlang Formation. This
formation has yielded abundant molluscan shell fragments as well as echinoid
spines, ostracods and red algae. The upper portion of this formation has
proportionately less conglomerate beds than the lower portions. The upper
beds are also more tuffaceous and sometimes exhibit high proportions of
magnetite. It was dated Pliocene by Lorentz (1984) but Maleterre (1989) gives
an age dating of Late Pliocene for this formation.
Tarlac Formation rests conformably over the Malinta Formation and is
unconformably overlain by the Bamban Formation. The shale is sandy and
fossiliferous. The sandstone exhibits spheroidal weathering and has less fossils.
The conglomerate is massive to thin bedded with subangular to subrounded to
flat pebbles, cobbles and boulders of igneous rocks, sandstone and limestone
in a coarse, tuffaceous sandstone matrix.”

Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was conducted at every 1.5 meter depth
interval, observing procedures stipulated in the American Society for Testing
and Materials (ASTM) D-1586. Split spoon samples were obtained and a visual
classification was conducted on all soil samples.
Each borehole was advanced by the wash boring method. This is started by
driving a 4-inch diameter casing first to a depth of 1.05 meter bgs to allow the
conduct of SPT within the next 0.45 meter (18 in.) for a total of 1.5 meter drill
advance. The casing is then cleaned out by means of a chopping bit fastened
to the lower end of a wash pipe that is inserted inside the casing. Water is
forced down through the wash pipe and emerges at a high velocity through
small openings in the chopping bit. It then rises, carrying fragments of soil,
through the annular space between casing and the wash pipe. Upon reaching
the designated depth (1.05 m), the chopping bit is replaced with a standard
spoon sampler (made up of 2-inch outside diameter (O.D.) and 1 & 3/8-inch
inside diameter barrel). The sampler is then used to obtain a soil sample while
penetrating it into the soil through SPT in accordance with ASTM procedures
(ASTM D-1586). On top of a series of rods is the driving head, upon which a
140.0 lb. hammer falls freely from a height of 30”. Seating blows for the first
6-inch penetration of the sampler is done. N-values derived from the borings
are reflected in appropriate columns in the Final Borehole Log in Appendix C. A
number of pictures were taken during the investigation (Appendix E). The
number of blows (N) for the next 12 inches or one foot of penetration of a split-
spoon sampler were then recorded as a measure of the soil relative density or
consistency as given in Table 1 & 2.

This test method covers the determination of sulphate in water in the range
from 1 to 40 mg/L of sulphate ion. A solution containing glycerine and
sodium chloride is added to stabilize the suspension and minimixe
interferences. The result of turbidity is determined by a nephelometer,
spectrophotometer, or photoelectric colorimeter and compared to a curve
prepared from standard sulphate solutions.
Chloride Ion in Water per ASTM D512
This test method covers the determination of chloride ion in water,
wastewater and brines. Dilute mercuric nitrate solution is added to an
acidified sample in the presence of mixed diphenylcarbazonebromophenol
blue indicator. The end point of the titration is the formation of the blue-
violet mercury diphenylcarbazone complex.

The SPT N-value observed during testing is not utilized directly in assessing soil
properties. These values are corrected to account for the overburden pressure.
Corrected N values are between 5-37 blows with relative density of loose to
dense for sand.
Correlations with SPT N values from Peck et al. (1974), David F. McCarthy,
Wilun and Starzewski were used to determine the angle of shearing resistance
or angle of friction (ϕ) and unit weight (ɣ). Modulus of subgrade reaction for
vertical and horizontal has been determine using NAVFAC (1986), Simons &
Menzies in Table 4. It should be noted that B is the pile width / diameter.

because loose sand has a tendency to compress when a load is applied; dense
sands by contrast tend to expand in volume or dilate. If the soil is saturated by
water, a condition that often exists when the soil is below the ground water
table or sea level, then water fills the gaps between soil grains ('pore spaces').
In response to the soil compressing, this water increases in pressure and
attempts to flow out from the soil to zones of low pressure (usually upward
towards the ground surface). However, if the loading is rapidly applied and
large enough, or is repeated many times (e.g. earthquake shaking, storm wave
loading) such that it does not flow out in time before the next cycle of load is
applied, the water pressures may build to an extent where they exceed the
contact stresses between the grains of soil that keep them in contact with each
other. These contacts between grains are the means by which the weight from
buildings and overlying soil layers are transferred from the ground surface to
layers of soil or rock at greater depths. This loss of soil structure causes it to
Page | 12
19
North South Commuter Railway Extension Project CP N-03
lose all of its strength (the ability to transfer shear stress) and it may be
observed to flow like a liquid (hence 'liquefaction').
For a cohesive material to become susceptible to liquefaction, it must meet all
the following criteria:
• The soil must have less than 15% of the particles that are finer than
0.005 mm
• The soil must have a liquid limit that is less than 35, and
• The water content of the soil must be greater than 0.9 of the liquid
limit
Present cohesive materials indicates a low relative densities that are prone to
liquefaction. Moreover, PHIVOLCS identified the area to be moderately
susceptible (Figure 3) liquefiable.

The samples taken and used for testing and the observations are believed to
be representative of the entire area. However, the writer should be contacted
during design modification of the structure to determine the load distribution.
Any changes in the conditions will be evaluated and the foundation designs
may be adjusted or alternate designs may be recommended.
