East vs. West: Spiritual and Material Struggles

The document contrasts the spiritual views of the East and West. The East focuses on the soul through fasting and asceticism, seeking nirvana or release from the cycle of rebirth. The West focuses on bodily pleasures and scientific progress to create an earthly paradise. Both visions are flawed - an earthly paradise cannot be achieved and nirvana means the destruction of life. The document argues that Orthodox Christian peoples like Serbia should stand above the East and West, pursuing the pure spiritual paradise promised by Christ and bringing others to repentance and baptism.

Struggle for the soul and struggle for the body

The East is struggling for the soul, the West is struggling for the body. The East does not believe
in an earthly paradise. The West does not believe in heavenly paradise. Fasting is the first condition of
salvation for Easterners. For a Westerner, fasting is a crazy denial of the pleasures offered. In the past,
the West kept fasting and other bodily abstinences for the salvation of the soul. But we are talking about
the present West, about the spiritually rotten, which is afraid of fasting so that its body would not lose
weight. After all, when the churches in the West have rejected every fast, will the laity be expected to
understand the importance of fasting and to fast? Everyone claims what is clear to everyone, and that is,
that Western peoples are returning to paganism. But few distinguish paganism from paganism. Western
peoples are not returning to Eastern paganism but to Western paganism. Because Eastern paganism is
associated with severe asceticism, fasting and physical torture of various kinds. If the peoples of Europe
returned to Eastern paganism, they would fast and torture themselves as the peoples of India, Tibet and
China do. But they are not returning to that ascetic paganism of the East, but to the debauched
paganism of the West, that is, to the paganism of their unbaptized European ancestors.
Western paganism was bloody, cruel, and debauched from beginning to end. Such was the case
among the Greeks, even more severe among the Romans, and even more severe among the ancient
Germans and Franks. Could have old Helens known about the fast, when the Olympic debauchery of
their gods was constantly hovering before their eyes? And could there be a question of some kind of
abstinence with the bloodthirsty Roman emperors, who had spittoons next to their dining room, so that
they could spit out one lunch and then have lunch again? Or with the Roman rich, who made lunches
from nightingale tongues? What kind of fasting and what kind of abstinence could be imagined among
the Frankish and Teutonic peoples, who ate raw meat crushed under the saddle of a rider? The apostasy
of the West from Christ means the return of the West to paganism, but not to Indian paganism,
compassionate and resigned, but to its paganism, Western, bloodthirsty and debauched, without spirit
and without conscience, which is shown in action before our eyes.
Islam is undoubtedly more spiritual than the paganized West. Because it knows about fasting
and prayer, and about God and the soul. It is truly more spiritual than that intellectual gang who laughs
at fasting and prayer and denies God and the soul and suffers only for earthly paradise. But Islam and
the paganized West are related in one thing: in understanding the future paradise. True, Muslims
imagine paradise in heaven and not on earth, while Western pagans imagine paradise on earth and not
in heaven. Indeed, these two paradises, it can be said, are topographically very distant from each other,
but they are essentially identical. Because both Muslims and Westerners imagine paradise as the
fullness of bodily life and the full satisfaction of all bodily passions. In order to gain such a paradise,
Muslims suffer from fasting and prayer, and worship, and Westerners suffer from alleged scientific
research and social upheavals.
In contrast to both, India and Tibet are suffering, and they are suffering terribly, neither for
paradise on earth nor for paradise in heaven, but for the destruction of life, for the cessation of
reincarnation, for unconsciousness and insensitivity, for nirvana. For them, life is Maya, deception, and
Samsara, a whirlpool in which both men and gods find themselves. For them, there is neither a heavenly
paradise nor, even less, an earthly paradise. Even their gods are not in Paradise, but in the misfortune of
existence, in the deception of personal life, in the whirlpool of Samsara. And as much as people expect
salvation from the gods, so much do the gods expect salvation from people. That is why Gautama
Buddha had the courage to say: I have come to save people and gods! Indeed, the notion of God and
man is false where such language could be heard. But there is no less false language in the West where
it is said: Enjoy! Enjoy yourself! (Satisfy yourself! - say the English). Not only is it not the language of
Christian peoples, but it is not the language of better or more noble Greek philosophers. Neither
Socrates, nor Plato, nor Aristotle dared to speak so. It was spoken by the one who represents the tares
and the disease of Hellenic philosophy - Epicurus. He dared to say a terrible word: Grab the day! That is,
enjoy today, because tomorrow you can be dead for eternity. Grab every new day and suck it to the
blood. This is the paganism of the West to which the former Christian Europe is now attracted. What can
we say about the torture of Eastern and Western humanity, about the huge panorama of torture for the
sake of an unreal and unattainable goal? It is an unrealistic and unattainable goal, for which the Islamic
world of the East is striving and working when it is tormented. Because there is no physical and
passionate paradise in heaven. It is an unrealistic and unattainable goal, for which the world of Great
Asia for thousands of years aspired and was tormented. For there is a God, the one and only, who
created all souls and who awaits them all in His lap. Self-destruction is a crime and nirvana is a lie.
Unattainable and unfulfilled is the goal of the scientific and godless West. Paradise on earth is a paradise
without prophets; such a paradise is neither prophesied, nor has it been nor will it be. Paradise is where
love is. And love is where the Parent is. Therefore, paradise is not on earth but in heaven, it is not
sensual, but spiritual, nor is it like harem, but angelic. It is clear from all this that the Orthodox peoples
cannot stand between the East and the West, but above. Especially the Orthodox Balkans, which have
cried in slavery for half a thousand years, more than any other Christian nation in the world. The Balkans
must be clairvoyant and distinguish day from night and wheat from tares.
The Balkans must not waver between East and West, that is, between the Islamic heavenly but
passionate paradise and the materialistic earthly paradise of Western nations. The Balkans are neither
East nor West, nor is it between East and West. It is above the East and the West. Because the Balkans
clairvoyantly see that the torture of Easterners is a torture for death. So, with the help of asceticism, one
can go to Nirvana, here one can die forever with the help of enjoyment, or after death one can go down
to the underground cellars of Valhalla, where the bodily orgy started on earth is prolonged. The Balkans
must stand above all the unclean paradises of East and West; and it must know of the pure paradise of
Christ, which is neither orgy nor despair. Only in this way can Christian Serbia have an apostolic task, to
bring the East to baptism and the West to repentance. In that way the whole human race may be
blessed as one flock of one shepherd, for ever and ever. Amen.
