Introduction

1.1 Background of Marina Foods (Pvt) Ltd.

Marina was established in year 1982 and it is the flagship brand of Cherubim Lanka
(Pvt) Limited, a fully Sri Lankan owned company within the NMK group of
companies[ CITATION Mar19 \l 1033 ].

The business primarily focuses on providing the Sri Lankan market with high quality
oil, margarine and fats to hotels, customers and various bakers. Marina products are free
from harmful chemicals and it is further guaranteed to be trans-free and customer safe. The
company uses an environmentally friendly manufacturing process and ensures product safety
of the employees[ CITATION Mar19 \l 1033 ].

Marina products are available in all leading supermarkets in Sri Lanka and are
currently exporting to Japan, India and China. The Marina has obtained the internationally
recognized ISO 22000/HACCP, Halal and GMP certifications. Marina coconut oil is mainly
used in households for prepping food. It can also be found in some several biscuit brands,
savories and ice creams. Marina products are mainly organic virgin coconut oil, coconut
milk, sunflower oil, soya bean oil, marina lite, vegetable gee and other bakery required oil
ingredients[ CITATION Mar19 \l 1033 ].

1.2 New market – Kuwait

Kuwait is an Arab country with a population of 4.21million which includes over one
million Kuwaitis and more than two million expatriates. The capital of Kuwait is Kuwait city
and the main religion followed is Islam[ CITATION Cen19 \l 1033 ].

Kuwait’s cuisine mostly includes a variety of succulent dishes from machboos,


flatbread to kebabs. Almost all of its main dishes require cooking oil in order to give the dish
its flavour and preferred tenderness for the meat dishes. Therefore, acquiring a market
segment in this country could be highly beneficial for Marina Foods (Pvt) Ltd [ CITATION
Koc19 \l 1033 ].
