Classroom Arrangement Assignment

List and Supporting Rationale
● Whole Class Instruction Area
○ In the whole class instruction area, I decided to add a projector to the classroom
due to the students who cannot see well, so if they are sitting towards the front of
the classroom, they will be able to see, since it will be projectified. I also decided
to add two big square rugs on the floor to ensure that there is plenty of space for
the student in the wheelchair to move around during that time. This area will
mainly be used for storytime, when I want to read a story aloud while sitting in
the rocking chair. This will also be an interactive learning area. There is a smart
board and a white board up at the front. Therefore, I can have a variety of lessons
up in the front, to have the students all close to me and in one section of the room.
I also added an easel in the front to help write important information, such as sight
words or the letter of the week. It will help the students refer back to it whenever
it is needed.
● Technology Center
○ In the technology center, I decided to add the computers to the classroom for the
student with a reading learning disability. This would help them to use different
online resources independently, for a more interactive approach to reading, which
could help greatly. This area can also become wheelchair accessible, if I just
remove the chair in front of the computer, so the student can access the computer.
This is a great section to help bring students to work more interactively. There are
so many great resources that students could benefit from online. A few are:
BrainPop. ABCya!, Spelling City, and so many more. This would help them
practice important information in a fun and engaging way. Another benefit to this
area is that technology is very important and students should learn that from a
young age.
● Reading Corner
○ In the reading corner, I decided to only have two bean bag chairs so that there is
lots of space on the circle rug for the student in a wheelchair to go. This way, it is
not too crowded and he/she can easily go to this area. I also decided to add two
shelves and a book stand to make sure that there are many books so the student
with a reading learning disability can have lots of options to choose from. When
struggling with reading, it would help to at least have some options of books that
are interesting to the reader, to help the process be a little more manageable. If a
student’s interest is there, then it will help them learn to love reading. “The
motivation of interest is a much strong motivation than having an adult
encouraging them to read” (Jfunk, 2015). This is the perfect area for independent
reading or for students to calm down if they are acting out.
● Small Group Area
○ I decided to have this small group area to help the student with the reading
language disability have more individualized instruction with me, as her teacher
to help guide her in a smaller group setting. This is the perfect area for stations. It
is placed in the front of the classroom, which is perfect for the teacher to still see
everything that is going on in the classroom, while helping others.
● Independent Study Area
○ In the independent study area, I believe that having tables rather than desks is
more beneficial to students' learning. It is easier for the students to practice
collaborative learning, while also having some sense of independence.
Partner/table work is a wonderful technique to implement in the classroom since
that helps students learn better. I decided to give the aisles in between the tables
lots of space for the student who is in a wheelchair. This will make it easy for
him/her to move around the classroom, without feeling as though they are in the
way. I put two of the tables close to the rug in the whole class instruction area.
This is for the students who are having a hard time seeing, so that they are close to
the board, and can be close to the teachers desk as well, in case they have any
concerns.
