INSUM Switchgear Control System
INSUM is an intelligent system based on PowerIT - Low Voltage Switchgear MNS, offering
superior protection, control and monitoring for user-optimized motor management.
Relevant information from the process – including timely alarms – enable plant operators
to make smart decisions on process conditions. Plant availability is significantly improved
through preventive actions. Data with quality far beyond conventional motor protection
or remote control technology is utilized by engineering crews for detailed system analysis
and need based maintenance.
This brochure provides an overview of the INSUM System, its components, their functions
and benefits as well as relevant technical data. Please refer also to our website at

MNS System Applications
Personal Safety and Operational Reliability
Safety for the operating and maintenance personnel is a key issue in all of ABB’s
switchgear development efforts. The safety related designs, as well as testing and
verification procedures, receive the greatest attention in order to supply you with the
safest possible switchgear.
The MNS switchgear is devided into separate compartments for busbars, equipment
and cables. The design and materials used help to prevent damages, In the unlikely
event of an arcing problem the damage will be contained and limited to the compartment
where it occured. This allows for fast repair and quick recommissioning of your switchgear.
The safety of the MNS switchgear has been verified by extensive type and arc testing
in accordance with the IEC standards and technical reports. Additional testing confirm
the suitability of the MNS switchgear to be used in seismic active areas, shelters, as
well as for marine applications
The MNS switchgear can be equipped with
• Withdrawable units
• Removable and plug-in units
• Fixed units
The selection of the type of outgoing units is determined by the required operational
reliability and the needs to reduce down time to a minimum. The versatility of the MNS
system allows the optimal solution to be selected for each specific application.
The metal parts of the MNS system are corrosion protected. All plastic parts are free
of CFCs and halogens and they are flame retardant and self extinguishing.
