Methergine

Methergine (methylergonovine maleate) is used to prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage. It works by directly stimulating smooth muscle contractions in the uterus and cervix to decrease bleeding after delivery. The recommended dosage is 0.2 mg intramuscularly every 2-4 hours as needed for a total of 5 doses, or 0.2 mg intravenously over 1 minute in emergencies. Adverse effects include hypertension, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Nursing responsibilities include closely monitoring blood pressure during administration and being aware of the risk of severe hypertension with intravenous use.
