Lab 13 Instructions

1. Read Lab 13 and complete the pre-lab.


2. Read through procedure 13.1. Then, go to the following website:
http://www.discoverdevelopment.com/PHP/SlidesStarfish.php

At the website above, on the left side are the different stages of starfish development. If you click on
them, an image of that stage will open up. You need to do the following:

 Click on the unfertilized egg tab and draw what you see in the circle at the top of page 280 in
your lab manual. You do not need to write the description that pops up with the picture.
 Click on the following tabs and then draw what you see in the 4 circles on page 281 in your lab
manual. You do not need to write the description that pops up with each picture:
o 2-cell stage
o 4-cell stage
o 8-cell stage
o Morula
 Click on the Blastula tab and draw what you see at the top of page 282 under number 5 in your
lab manual, also label any structures that you can identify. You do not need to write the
description that pops up with each picture
 Click on the Mid Gastrula tab and draw what you see at the top of page 283 under number 6 in
your lab manual, also label any structures that you can identify. You do not need to write the
description that pops up with each picture
 Answer question 1 on page 283. You can compare what you saw on the website. You can skip
question 2 on page 283.

3. Read through procedure 13.2. Then, go to the following website:

At the website above, do the following:

 Look at the picture of early cleavage and draw what you see on page 285 under number 3 in
your lab manual, also label the animal and vegetal poles.
 Look at the picture of the blastula and draw what you see on page 285 under number 4 in
your lab manual, also label the animal pole, vegetal pole, and the blastocoel.
 Look at the pictures of early gastrula and late gastrula and draw what you see on page 286
under number 2 in your lab manual. Label the parts you can identify.
 Look at the picture of the neurula and draw what you see on page 288 under number 2 in your
lab manual, also label your image.
Then go to the following website:

At the website above, do the following:


 Click on one of the small pictures of the 4mm frog cross sections at the bottom of the page.
Clicking on it should bring up a larger picture (this may take a little bit). Draw what you see
on page 288 under number 3 in your lab manual. Label the parts you can identify.
 Answer questions 1 and 2 on pages 288 and 289 in your lab manual. You can skip questions
3 and 4 on page 289 in your lab manual.

4. Read through Procedure 13.3. Skip questions 1 and 2 on page 290. Use the images in the lab manual
to do your drawings on Page 295, Figure 13.15.
 Fill in the table on page 296.
5. Read through procedure 13.4.
 Answer question 1 on page 297.
 Answer questions 1-5 on page 299.
6. Answer all of the post-lab questions.
