NEBOSH IG2 Risk Assessment Feedback

The learner completed a risk assessment for an organization. They provided a description of the organization including location, number of employees, activities, and shift patterns. They identified 11 hazards from 6 categories and completed all columns of the risk assessment table. For prioritizing actions, they selected 3 actions and discussed likelihood, severity, and how the actions would control risk, though justification for one action was unclear. They set a review date and outlined communicating and following up on the assessment. The feedback noted areas done well and areas for improvement regarding justifying actions and terminology.

Feedback

Part 1 - A Comprehensive description detailing the location numbers of employees , and the types of work carried out.
Shift patterns were discussed and the assessment areas to be assessed were also described. A good range of sources
of information included observations and discussions with workers. Local requirements, OSHA, ILO & HSE publications
were referred to for legislation and codes of practice. Information regarding how additional controls measures were made
was included.
Part 2 – 11 hazards from 6 categories were identified. All other columns were completed appropriately
Part 3 – 3 Actions were identified following on from the risk assessment. General Legal, moral, and financial arguments
were discussed along with the likelihood and severity of each action before the intervention. Specific legal references to
ILO standards were clearly made for actions 1 & 3 but not action 2 - The legislation quoted makes no reference to
lighting. The effectiveness of the action in controlling the risk was also outlined though Action 3 was not clear and the
reference to security staff checking scaffold seems out of place . Please note that generally all electrical cable has two
layers of insulation but not classed as double insulation. This term usually refers to equipment.
Part 4 – A realistic review date was suggested and the reason behind the choice was also given . The methodology of
communication was discussed and applied to all levels of the organisation. The methodology for follow up actions was
outlined.
Please refer to the NEBOSH NG2 Risk assessment guidance and the risk assessment exemplar for information on
how to complete the risk assessment.
