Chapter 1: Introduction

Major Components
The INT-EX1×6 wideband distribution amplifier consists of a 2RU frame,
which can be mounted on the front or rear of a standard equipment rack; an I/O
circuit card, which contains the BNCs and distribution circuitry; and a single or
dual power supply. (This product comes with a single power supply as standard
equipment. An optional second power supply provides redundancy.)
The INT-EX1×6 consists of two primary components (excluding the frame):
• INT-EX1×6-MB Analog/digital audio/video I/O module
• EX16-PS2 Power supply module

INT-EX1×6 I/O Module

The INT-EX1×6 wideband distribution amplifier input/output (I/O) module is
designed to handle SMPTE 259M and 344M (for standard definition video) and
292M (for 720p or 1080i HD serial digital video) signal formats. This module
will also accept and duplicate all analog video and coaxial AES signals. The I/O
module contains 16 input and 32 output BNCs on one side of the board, and 64
output BNCs on the other side of the board. There are six output BNCs for each
input BNC. The six output BNCs provide duplication of that which is placed on
the input BNC.

Input Equalization
The I/O module does not provide input cable equalization.

Power Supply Module

Figure 1-3. INT-EX1×6 Power Supply

One power supply module (PS1) is included as standard equipment in the

INT-EX1×6 frame. To provide redundancy, a second power supply module
(PS2) may be added above the existing power supply module. No configuration
settings are needed for the power supply module(s). See “Installing an
Additional Power Supply” on page 15 for power supply installation instructions.

4 INT-EX1×6 Wideband Distribution Amplifiers Installation Manual

Chapter 1: Introduction

AC Power Supply Module (INTEX-PS-AC)

An AC power supply module is included with INT-EX1×6 modules. The 10W
universal input (90-250VAC) power supply provides ±5V rails to the frame.
DC Power Supply Module (INTEX-PS-DC)
A DC power supply module is included with INT-EX1×6-D modules. The 10W,
-48V input (-40 to -60 VDC) power supply provides ±5V rails to the frame.

Power Conversion
The INT-EX1×6 internal power circuitry converts 110 VAC to (±) 5 VDC,
which is then routed to the I/O module.
There are two green LEDs on the front of the power module, one for each
voltage rail. These LEDs indicate that power is present in the frame, but does
not guarantee that all rails are within specified voltage limits.

Power Requirements
The INT-EX1×6-MB I/O module requires +5 VDC and –5 VDC power, which
is provided by the AC-to-DC conversion module.

Chassis Safety Ground

Figure 1-4. Chassis Safety Ground Location

The chassis safety ground protects equipment users from electrocution in the
event of an electrical catastrophe by providing a direct electrical path from the
equipment chassis to earth ground. Whether the electrical catastrophe takes the
form of an electrical fault within an INT-EX1×6 wideband distribution amplifier
or an external source such as a lightning strike, any potentially lethal voltage
will be diverted away from personnel and directly to earth ground. The
INT-EX1×6 chassis safety ground uses a dual-bolt mount designed to be mated
to a dual-hole compression lug. The dual-hole compression lug is crimped to
stranded wire that is 8 gauge in size, which has its other end securely attached to
the nearest earth ground point.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Power Status Alarm

Figure 1-5. Power Status Alarm

A power status alarm function is provided via two LEDs and a 3-pin terminal
block alarm port.
• If the voltage regulator output in the module is operating in the normal
range (±0.5V tolerance on each rail [+5V, –5V]) the LED is green.
• If the voltage regulator output in the module goes out of normal range, the
LED is extinguished and a contact closure occurs on the alarm port.

These devices are for professional use only and comply with Part 15 of
FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions:

1. These devices may cause interference to radio and TV receivers in

residential areas.
2. These devices will accept any interference received, including
interference that may cause undesired operations.
Changes or modifications not expressly approved by Leitch
Technology,™ the party responsible for compliance to the FCC Part 15
Rule, could void the user’s authority to operate this equipment legally in
the United States.
These devices do not exceed the Class A limits for radio noise emissions
from digital apparatus as set out in the interference standard entitled
“Digital apparatus,” ICES-003 of the Canadian Department of
Communications.

Additional EMC Information

This device is for professional use in a controlled EMC environment, such as
purpose-built broadcast studios.
EMC regulations require that the radiation emitted from this unit does not
exceed certain limits. These limits are only met when the front panel is closed
and the two thumb screws are secured.
Compliance to the EMC regulations is also dependent on the use of suitably
shielded (screened) cables. Coax cables should be of the double-shielded
(screened) variety. Unused BNCs should be fitted with 75Ω terminations.
All audio cables should be screened with the shield (screen) making good
contact with the metallic parts of the cable connectors.
D-type connectors used with this unit should always have metallic shells with
the shield (screen) of the cable mechanically bonded to the metal shell. It is
further recommended that the D-type cable connectors be of the “dimple”
variety. These connectors make a better contact and consequently improve EMC
performance.
