557.3 Definitions
Licensed copy: Mr Yiwei Chen, CSCEC, Version correct as of 09/07/2010 13:43, (c) BSI

For the purpose of this standard the following definitions apply.

NOTE For general definitions see IEC 60050; Part 826.

557.3.1
Auxiliary circuits
Circuits for transmission of signals intended for detection or supervision of a functional status
of a main circuit, e.g. control, signalling and measurement including power supply of auxiliary
circuits.

557.3.2
Main circuit
Circuit containing electrical equipment for generation, conversion, distribution or switching of
electrical power.

557.3.3
Transformer for supply of auxiliary circuits
Transformer with separate windings intended to supply auxiliary circuits

NOTE 1 In case of application of SELV or PELV, a protective separation of transformer winding exists, e.g. if using
a safety transformer according to IEC 61558-2-6.

NOTE 2 In case of application of FELV, a transformer according to IEC 61558-2-1 with simple separation is
sufficient.

557.4 Requirements for auxiliary circuits

557.4.1 General

Supply of auxiliary circuits may be provided

– by DC or AC power supply

NOTE In extended installations a DC power supply may be advantageous.

– dependent or independent on the circuit, according to its required function. If the

status of the circuit must be signalled then the signalling circuit must be able to
operate independent of that circuit

557.4.2 Power supply for auxiliary circuits dependent on the main circuit

557.4.2.1 General

Auxiliary circuits with supply dependent on the main circuit may be connected to the main
circuit

– directly or via a rectifier, or

– via transformer
-4- 64/1711/CD

NOTE 1 It is recommended that auxiliary circuits primarily supplied electronic equipment or systems should not be
supplied directly from the main circuit but at least via simple separation from the main circuit.

NOTE 2 In case of auxiliary circuits connected to the main circuit, the auxiliary circuit begins at the first branching
from the main circuit, see Figure 557.1. In case of the use of a transformer the auxiliary circuit begins on the
secondary side of the transformer, see Figure 557.2.

557.4.2.2 Auxiliary circuits supplied directly or via rectifier by the main circuit

Protection against overcurrent shall be provided in accordance with Part 53.

NOTE 1

– the overcurrent protective device of the main circuit may protect the wiring of the auxiliary circuit if the
auxiliary circuit wiring is dimensioned as the main circuit or

– the overcurrent protective device may be selected based on the size of the wiring of the auxiliary circuit.

NOTE 2 Protection by overcurrent of an auxiliary circuit by an overcurrent protective device of the main circuit is
usually only possible by overcurrent protective devices with a low rated current, e.g. because of the protection of
switching contacts, see 557.4.7.2.

557.4.2.3 Auxiliary circuits supplied from the main circuit via transformer

In case of supply by more than one transformer, the transformers shall be connected so that
there is no phase difference on the secondary side.

-5- 64/1711/CD

557.4.3 Auxiliary circuits supplied by an independent source

Auxiliary circuits may be supplied independently from the main circuit, e.g. by batteries or
Licensed copy: Mr Yiwei Chen, CSCEC, Version correct as of 09/07/2010 13:43, (c) BSI

power supply systems independent from the mains.

A loss of supply or under-voltage in the main circuit or the auxiliary circuit shall not create a
hazardous situation, see Part 44 Clause 445.

557.4.4 Auxiliary circuits with or without connection to earth

Auxiliary circuits may be earthed or unearthed.

NOTE It depends on the requirements for the auxiliary circuits whether they are operated earthed or unearthed.

557.4.4.1 Earthed auxiliary circuits

Auxiliary circuits supplied via a transformer shall be earthed only at one point on the
secondary side of the transformer. The connection to earth shall be situated close to the
transformer. The connection shall be easily accessible and capable to be isolated for
insulation measurement.

557.4.4.2 Unearthed auxiliary circuits

If auxiliary circuits for control and signalling are operated unearthed, e.g. via transformer, an
insulation monitoring device (IMD) according to IEC 61557-8 shall be installed on the
secondary side.

557.4.5 Characteristics of power supplies for auxiliary circuits

For auxiliary circuits supplied by a transformer, in order to ensure a reliable operation in the
range of the nominal voltage tolerances, the rated voltage of the auxiliary circuit shall be
selected according to IEC 60038.

NOTE 1 If the rated voltage would be selected too low it could impair the safe operation of the auxiliary circuits.

NOTE 2 The voltage drop on the line conductor supplying the electrical equipment installed in the auxiliary voltage
may show specific characteristics which have to be taken into account for the design of the circuit, e.g.:

– In case of AC supply, relays and solenoid valves may have an inrush current of 7 to 8 times of the holding
current. In case of DC supply, the inrush current is equal to the permanent current.

– In case of motors starting direct-on-line, the starting current may reduce the supply voltage of an auxiliary
circuit depended on the main circuit below the minimum withstand voltage of the switchgear.

557.4.5.1 Stand-by power supplies or power supply for safety services
In case of use of stand-by power supplies or power supply for safety services generated by
combustion engines, the frequency variation has to be taken into account.

557.4.5.2 AC supply

The nominal voltage of control circuits should preferably not exceed:

– 230V for circuits with 50 Hz nominal frequency and

– 277V for circuits with 60 Hz nominal frequency,

respectively, taking into account voltage tolerances according to IEC 60038.
NOTE The dimensioning of cable length with respect to the conductor capacitances, e.g. connection to a limit
switch, needs to be coordinated with the selected relays or solenoid valves.
The standing of voltage caused by high conductor capacitances may impair the switching off of the relay or
solenoid valve.
-6- 64/1711/CD

557.4.5.3 DC supply

557.4.5.3.1 Supply by a power system

Licensed copy: Mr Yiwei Chen, CSCEC, Version correct as of 09/07/2010 13:43, (c) BSI

The nominal voltage of control circuits should preferably not exceed 220V.

557.4.5.3.2 Supply by batteries

In case of use of batteries as power supply for auxiliary circuits the voltage fluctuation due to
charging or discharging shall not exceed voltage tolerances as specified in IEC 60038.

NOTE Compensation of the voltage fluctuation may be achieved by counter cells.

557.4.6 Protection measures

557.4.6.1 Protection by overcurrent

Protection against overload shall comply with Clause 533.

557.4.6.2 Protection by short circuit

Switching contacts of electrical equipment shall be protected against damage caused by short
circuit currents, according to the manufacturer instructions.

557.4.6.3 Protection of wiring systems

Wiring systems of auxiliary circuits shall be protected against overheating by short-circuit
current according to Part 43.

NOTE 1 In case of auxiliary circuits with cross-sectional areas of conductors below 1,5 mm 2 , protection against
short circuits may be provided by protective devices with current limiting function.

NOTE 2 In case of extended auxiliary circuits it should be taken into account that the required tripping current of
the protective device should be met also at the far end of the respective cables or conductors see IEC 60364-4-
43:2002, Clause 433.1.

Single phase earthed AC or DC auxiliary circuits, supplied on the secondary side of an
auxiliary supply are permitted to be protected by single-pole-switching devices.

Unearthed AC or DC auxiliary circuits shall be protected against short-circuit by all-pole

switching protective devices. But single pole protection may be permitted, if the rated voltage
and the time-current characteristic of the related short-circuit protective device are designed
so that the conductor with the smallest cross-section is protected.

NOTE 3 The application of 2-pole protective devices relieves the disconnection and the fault analysis in each
separated circuit.

If the short-circuit protective device on the primary side of the transformer for an auxiliary
circuit is selected so that it protects also against short-circuit on the secondary side, a
protective device on the secondary side of the transformer may be omitted.

NOTE 4 The magnitude of the short-circuit current on the primary side depends also on the impedance of the
transformer.

A common return conductor for several auxiliary circuits may be used if the cross sectional
area is dimensioned for the sum of currents occurring.

557.5.2 Conductors of different circuits

In case of common installation of cables of circuits with different supply voltages, the
requirements of IEC 60364-5-52:2002 Clause 528.1 have to be complied with.

557.6 Requirements for auxiliary circuits used for measurement

The following basic types of measurement circuits are considered in the subsequence
clauses. Circuits for:

– direct measurement of electrical magnitudes,

– measurement of electrical magnitudes via transformer,

– measurement of electrical magnitudes by transducers.

557.6.1 Auxiliary circuits for direct measurement of electrical magnitudes

In case of direct connection of the measurement devices to the main circuit the following
measure for protection of cables against overheating shall be applied:

– requirements according IEC 60204-1:2005, Clause 7.2.8, and/or

– use of short-circuit protective devices.

If an interruption of the measurement circuit by disconnection of the short-circuit protective

device could lead to hazardous situations, the short-circuit protective device shall disconnect
also the related main circuit.

NOTE In case of measurement devices without electrical isolation between the measurement circuit and the
auxiliary source attention should be given to phase coincidence and correct polarity.

Licensed copy: Mr Yiwei Chen, CSCEC, Version correct as of 09/07/2010 13:43, (c) BSI

557.6.2.1 Current transformer

In case of connection of measurement devices to the main circuit via transformer the following
requirements have to be taken into account:

– the secondary side of the transformer in a low voltage installation shall not be
earthed, except the measurement can be carried out only with a connection to earth;

– protective devices interrupting the circuit shall not be used on the secondary side of
transformers;

– conductors of the secondary side of the transformer shall be insulated for the highest
voltage of any live parts or shall be installed such that their insulation cannot come in
contact with live parts, e.g. contact with busbars;

– terminals for temporary measurements shall be provided as disconnect-test-terminal

or as short-circuiting terminal;

– for the selection of the transformer the load by the conductors on the secondary is to
be taken into account (cross sectional area and length).

NOTE For the reduction of the influence of conductor impedances on the measuring result preferably transformers
should be used with a secondary nominal current of 1A.

The above requirements do not apply to summation current transformers where hazardous
voltages do not occur, e.g. equipment for insulation fault location according to IEC 61557-9.

557.6.2.2 Voltage transformers

The secondary side of voltage transformers shall be protected by short-circuit protective
devices.

557.7 Functional consideration

557.7.1 Voltage supply

Where loss of voltage, i.e. voltage fluctuation, overvoltage or undervoltage, could cause the
auxiliary circuit to be unable to perform a safety function, measures to ensure continued
operation of the auxiliary circuit shall be provided.

557.7.2 Quality of signals depending of the conductor

The operation of an auxiliary circuit shall not be adversely affected by the characteristics,
including impedance and length, of the cable between operational components.

The reactive- and resistive components shall be lower than the minimum release value of
electronically actuated equipment. The cable characteristics and length have to be taken into
account for the selection of switchgear and controlgear or electronic circuits.

NOTE For extended auxiliary circuit it is recommended to use DC-power supply or BUS-systems.

-9- 64/1711/CD

557.7.3 Short circuits and earth faults

Auxiliary circuits serving in a special function where reliability is a concern need to employ

additional design considerations to help prevent introduction of wiring faults. Among these
design considerations are:

– selection of appropriate installation methods of cables (see Clause 557.5.2)

– selection of equipment where a short circuit to exposed-conductive-parts is not

possible, e.g. class II equipment.

The following installation methods may be applied:

a) Arrangements of single wires (bare or insulated) if measures are provided which
prevent mutual contact and contact to exposed conductive parts and where short
circuits by external influences are not expected. This may be achieved d by e.g.:

- sufficient distance by spacer, or
- installation in separate cable trunking systems or in cable trunking systems
with partition walls, or
- installation in separate conduits.

b) Arrangements of:

- single core cables, or
- single core non-metallic-sheathed cables, or
- rubber-insulated flexible cables.

c) Accessible cables or non-metallic-sheathed cables, installed protected against
mechanical damage and not placed close to flammable material

d) Arrangements of non-metallic-sheathed cables with nominal voltage U0/U at least
0,6/1 kV (U0 = conductor to earth voltage, U = conductor to conductor voltage).

e) Use of cables in which the conductor insulation maintains its integrity even in case of the
conductor burning open

f) use of cables that are provided physical protection by burying , e.g. cable installed in soil or
concrete

g) cables installed in accordance with IEC 61439-1: 2009 clause 8.6.4

557.7.4 Current limiting signal outputs

In earthed and unearthed auxiliary circuits with circuits with current limiting signal outputs or
electronically controlled protection against short circuit conditions respectively, the concerned
signal circuits shall disconnect within 5s if the respective measure operates. In special cases
a shorter disconnection time may be required.

In case of current limiting signal outputs or electronically controlled protection of the signal
output respectively, an automatic disconnection of supply may be omitted if hazardous
situations are not liable.

Licensed copy: Mr Yiwei Chen, CSCEC, Version correct as of 09/07/2010 13:43, (c) BSI

557.7.5.1 Auxiliary circuits without direct connection to the main circuit

Electrical actuators, e.g. actuating relays, contactors, signaling lights, electromagnetic locking
devices shall be connected to the common conductor (see IEC 60204-1:2005, Figure 3):

a) in earthed auxiliary circuits at the earthed conductor;

b) in unearthed auxiliary circuits at the common conductor

Exception: Switching elements of protective relays, e.g. overcurrent relays, which may be
installed between the earthed or the non-earthed conductor and a coil, provided that
- this connection is contained inside of a common enclose, or
- it leads to a simplification of external control devices, e.g. conductor bars, cable
drums, multiple connectors, and taking into account the requirements of 557.6.2.2.

557.7.5.2 Auxiliary circuits with direct connection to the main circuit
If the auxiliary circuit
a) is supplied between two line conductors (e.g. L1 and L2 of an IT system), two-pole
switching contacts shall be used;
b) is connected with the earthed neutral of the main circuit, the requirements of 557.4.2.2
apply.

557.7.6 Lateral-short-circuit proof

Protection against lateral-short-circuit shall be in accordance with 557.7.3.

NOTE 1 This may be achieved by use of cables with an earthed screen. In case of pinching/shearing of a cable a
possible short-circuit to earth via the cables screen should be considered. In earthed auxiliary circuits, designed as
closed-circuit working, a short circuit may lead to tripping of the short circuit protective device. In unearthed
auxiliary circuits the short circuit is detected by IMD, see 557.4.4.2.

NOTE 2 Lateral-short-circuit proof means protection against the shorting of two parallel conductors forming part of
a normally closed circuit with a switching device to open the circuit.

557.7.7 Plug-in connection

In cases where, for installation or interconnection of more than one auxiliary circuit, several
plug-in connections are placed adjacent to each other, interchangeability shall be prevented.

NOTE Protection against interchangeability may be achieved by marking, polarization, design or electronic
interlocking.

The connectors shall be secured by an arrestor against unintended disconnection.

557.8 Functional safety

Requirements for auxiliary circuits with respect to functional safety according to IEC 61508
may become part of the general requirements for the design and installation of safety related
functions, e.g. change over of a power supply for safety services.
The designer/contractor shall carry out a risk assessment covering all safety related aspects
of an installation. This includes requirements for auxiliary circuits according to the determined
safety integrity level (SIL).

NOTE The requirements on the auxiliary circuits with safety related functions apply also for the connections
between the sensors and the control, or the control and the actuator, respectively (see Figure 3).
