Velocity of Sound via Resonance Column

The document describes an experiment to determine the velocity of sound in air using a resonance column apparatus. It measures the first and second resonant lengths (L1 and L2) of air columns inside the resonance tube for tuning forks of known frequencies. It then calculates the velocity using the formula vt = 2n(L2 - L1), where n is the fork frequency. The experiment is repeated for different forks and the mean velocity is reported.

RESONANCE COLUMN
Aim

To find the velocity of sound in air at room temperature using the resonance column by
determining two resonance positions.
Apparatus

Resonance column apparatus, tuning forks of known frequency, rubber hammer.

Theory

The velocity of sound in air at room temperature;

vt = 2n (L2 –L1)
where n is the frequency of the fork, L1 first resonating length and L2 second resonating length.

Procedure

• The excited tuning fork is held over the resonance tube.

• Starting with a very short air column, the length of the air column is increased, by raising the
inner tube, until the maximum ‘booming’ sound is heard.
• The length of the air column, is measured as L1.
• The inner tube is again raised until the next ‘booming’ sound is heard and the length in this case
is measured as L2.
• The velocity of sound in air at room temperature is given by vt = 2n (L2 –L1), where n is the
frequency of the fork.
• The experiment is repeated for different forks and the mean velocity is found.

Result

Velocity of sound in air at room temperature, vt = --------------- m/s.

Precautions
1. Hold the tuning fork by the stem only.
2. Take reading when the booming sound is maximum.

Sources of Error

1. Resonance tube may not be vertical.

2. Pinch cock may be loose.
