POETRY
SAVIORS WITH WHITE COATS
No words can brand
The bravery of the frontliners
As fearless as lioness
that can overcome each challenges
Their job may be complex
Required to be as firm as a balsa
Storms and cries of hardship
Must be chased away by their tenacity
They are real life superheroes
Considered as gems
Precious like diamonds
Needed to save the entire humanity
Their sacrifices are astounding
that made them a key for survival
Precisely in this time of sanity
of unending provocation of mankind.
4
TIMESANITY
How slow these two can be
as the short one runs as fast as it can
the lengthy one could care less
Takes its moment to endure its heaviness
Tick-tock clock
The waggish thought of how near are we,
How similar this sanity and humanity if compared
From the two hands of time
As we are stucked with this crisis
The flow of days seems furious,
Unending or may be unnoticeable
Are we going to survive this, I wonder how
I was robbed, without someone to tell to
without something to act as evidence.
Ever since I felt this moment of despair and hopefulness
Madness and insanity outlived.
Discern, I said something went missing
the joy from laughter and company
from my lovers, who I knew kept me alive
It was all gone, so long to hope when will it return
Time,It is the time that was taken away from me
the boundaries of this foolish crisis
pushed me to the verge of anguish
To a hole of loop of unending loneliness.

FICTION
The Wheel of Infidelity
As Martha wakes up every morning,an uninvited odor would disturb her sleep and
would certainly knew that it’s the time for her to change Alex’s full diaper. Without
washing and fixing her appearance, she immediately walks through the kitchen and
prepares food for her family. It was for their family breakfast and for his husband’s
lunch.
“Pwuh- These eggs are burnt, can’t you even make a decent meal?” as he
spits the food in his mouth. Martha didn’t bothered to look at his husband’s
disappointed face and continued to feed Alex. “ And look at you, since we had our
Alex you don’t even bother to fix your looks! Are you even combing your hair?” June
continued. It was heartbreaking but Martha smiled to his husband as if she was
hearing unkind words constantly and said “I’m sorry I can cook another meal if you
want to”. June stood up ignoring her wife while clinging to his phone and went
straight out going to work.
6
Martha was emotionally hurt and mentally frustrated for bearing this everyday
challenge of hers. It was an invisible ache that she was dealing with while taking care
of her son. She knew that it wasn’t only her. She would constantly sniff another girl’s
scent in June’s polo every time she does the laundry. It was torturing posing bravely
to save their marriage and her son’s future
That very night, she heard from outside that June was home. But as she peeped
through the window, she saw from a blurry sight his husband with his arms wrapped
around a girl’s waist as if they were exchanging farewells.
“Is this the very reason you would always overtime time on your work? Having
an affair with this woman? Stop dreaming you have a family!” Martha said as she
walked through furiously to June’s direction. “It’s not what you think” June stuttered
as he rapidly removed his arms from the woman’s waist. But Cath replied “ No June,
Tell her already. It is what you think and June promised to marry me.” proudly.
Martha was out of words, she couldn’t even cry. She knew that to shed tears in
front of their infidelity was worthless. She went straight inside their home, grabbed
her son and their clothes. June and Cath was there gazing at them as if they were
deeply happy inside their hearts. Martha’s husband didn’t even bothered to insist for
them to stay.
“ I’m dead beat used to this, I won’t even care anymore marrying that pathetic
woman beside you. I did everything I could June. But I knew I can give Alex a better
future that clinging to a complete family but full of your foolishness” Martha fiercely
uttered as she and her son was walking away leaving their chaotic home.
The marriage of June and his mistress went on and so is Martha and Alex’s life.
Martha stayed in a new apartment and progressively turned her house to home for
her them. She beautifully raised Alex and had different streams of income for them to
survived. She recovered from the heartache and focused in nurturing her life and his
son’s independently.
Years came and it was Alex’s recognition, Martha was excited and proud for
Alex. “ I know my boy can do it, can we pass through the shop and buy some flowers
first?” Martha gaily asked.
”Sure mom anything for you” he replied cheekily. They drove straight to the shop. As
they went out from the car, Martha caught a glimpse of a familiar face that made her
day unpleasant. It was June with her mistress pushing a cart containing their child.
Cath was appearing pitiful with her unmatched clothes while June kept staring at her,
and Alex.
At that very moment, June’s regrets overwhelmed him and realized what he had lost.
Not only his wife but his first family. It was him who ruined their lovely family before.
He nimble his sight away as if that he was humiliated in front of a crowd and walked
briskly away. It was a day that he knew he would never forget, a painful memorable
day that June would always feel remorseful and pained every time it runs through his
mind.
PROUD RED ROSE
One beautiful spring day a red rose blossomed in a forest. As the rose
looked around, a pine tree nearby said, “What a beautiful flower! I wish I
was that lovely.” Another tree said, “Dear pine, do not be sad. We cannot
have everything.”
The rose turned and remarked, “It seems that I am the most beautiful
flower in this forest.”
A sunflower raised its yellow head and asked, “Why do you say that? In
this forest there are many beautiful flowers. You are just one of them.”
The red rose replied, “I see everyone looking at me and admiring me.”
Then the rose looked at a cactus and said, “Look at that ugly plant full of
thorns!”
The pine tree said, “Red rose, what kind of talk is this? Who can say what
beauty is? You have thorns too.”
The proud red rose looked angrily at the pine and said, “I thought you had
good taste! You do not know what beauty is at all. You cannot compare
my thorns to that of the cactus.”
“What a proud flower,” thought the trees.
The rose tried to move its roots away from the cactus, but it could not
move. As the days passed, the red rose would look at the cactus and say
insulting things, like ‘this plant is useless. How sorry I am to be his
neighbor.’
The cactus never got upset and even tried to advise the rose, saying, “God
did not create any form of life without a purpose.”
Spring passed, and the weather became very warm. Life became difficult
in the forest, as there was no rain.
8
The red rose began to wilt.
One day the rose saw sparrows stick their beaks into the cactus and then
fly away, refreshed. This was puzzling, and the red rose asked the pine
tree what the birds were doing. The pine tree explained that the birds
were getting water from the cactus.
“Does it not hurt when they make holes?” asked the rose.
“Yes, but the cactus does not like to see the birds suffer,” replied the pine.
The rose opened its eyes in wonder and exclaimed, “The cactus has
water?”
“Yes, you can also drink from it. The sparrow can bring water to you if
you ask the cactus for help.”
The red rose felt too ashamed to ask for water from the cactus, but finally
it did ask for help. The cactus kindly agreed. The birds filled their beaks
with water and watered the rose’s roots.
Thus the rose learned a lesson and never judged anyone by their
appearance again.

Abadeha The Philippine Cinderella
Myrna J. de la Paz spent her childhood in the Philippines where she
learned about traditional Filipino folklore. She retells this Cinderella tale
in hopes that the rich indigenouspre-colonial lore of her people will not
be gonee after 300 years of Spanish and American influence.
Like most of the Cinderella tales, Abadeha is a young girl when her
mother becomes sick and dies. Her fisherman father
sailed to another island where he finds and marries a widow
with two daughters. Abak brings the stepfamily home expecting
that Abadeha will be cared for and cherished.Abadeha is mistreated and
given hard tasks by her stepmother who threatens to whip her with thick
bar sticks
The sweet and hardworking girl is helped by the Spirit of the Forest who
gives her a lovely sarimanok (a chicken with long flowing feathers). The
cruel stepmother killed her pet and Abadeha is told to bury the bird's feet
near her mother's grave. A magical tree grows from the spot and is
covered with treasures. The son of the island chieftain comes upon the
tree and tries on a ring which causes his finger to swell so that it cannot
be removed. The prince dreams that a young girl who springs from an
orchid removes the ring. When he awakens, the search for the lovely and
kind girl begins and eventually, with the help of the Spirit of the Forest,
Abadeha is able to meet the prince and remove the ring. Abadeha wears a
golden gown and jewelry from the enchanted tree and her father arrives
home from his fishing trip in time for the wedding, Stepmother and her
daughters are banished to the chicken yard. The tale ends with marriage
and the message that the prince and his bride share their wealth and
happiness with the people
14
In closing, this story was very sentimental and memorable for me. The
story Albadeha made me realize that it is close to the situation that
happened when we were colonized. Albadeha symbolizes us Filipino’s
who were mistreated and went through hardships during the Spanish and
American times. The Prince who saved Albadeha for me symbolizes our
heroes (bayani’s) and patriotic historical legends. Like the prince, they
symbolize hope that no matter the struggles and the length of time we’ve
been under colonization it is not impossible to escape chaos.
