Analysis: Bram Stocker’s Dracula

1. Indicate 5 instances in the life of Bram Stocker that call your

attention.

• His mother was a feminist.

• He had several health problems and he had to study at
home, his mother used to take care of him and she used
to tell him ghost stories which obviously were a big
influence later.
• He worked with Henry Irving, who was a famous actor.
They traveled around Europe where they went to some
unusual places like brothels where Stocker got syphilis.
• He was Oscar Wilde’s friend and he got married with an
ex girlfriend of Wilde, Florence Balcombe.

2. Highlight 6 gothic elements.

• The castles, we can see in the movie that Dracula lives in

an old and antique castle which gives him a gothic and
dark characteristic.
• The lights are also a gothic element; dark lights in the
castle give to the movie a horror environment.
• Dracula’s dresses are gothic; his coat and his dresses are
gothic and obscure.
• The full moon is a gothic element; we can see the full
moon all the time when Jonathan is living with Dracula.
The full moon gives the movie a shadowy environment
like the castle.
• The architecture and the colors in general are gothic
elements, Dracula’s castle is completely gothic, the most
used color is red, because of the bloody environment and
the dark side of Dracula.
• Bats are also an important element; they are associated
with Dracula but also with gothic elements. In the movie
we can see how Dracula arrives in a bat shape to the
Crazy man’s cell.

3. Explore two women's (Mina and Lucy) personality.

Mina: Mina is a shy girl who is in love with Jonathan and she
just wants to get married with him. It seems like she believes
in truth love and is a romantic girl. She is really conservative,
we can see this fact when she is writing in her diary and she
looks a sexual photograph, her reaction is of disgust and
apathy. On the other hand, she is a sweet girl, she just want
to be loved and she tries to find love, first in Jonathan and
then, in the Prince. It is important to regard that she is really
polite, she talks slowly, properly and with the right words,
when she met the prince, she wss rude and then she
apologized with him because of her behavior.

Lucy: Lucy is the opposite of Mina. Shy is bashful and she

wants to make everybody fall in love with her. All the time in
the movie, she look really sensual, even when she is death.
Although she is just a little girl she knows several things
about sex, at least more than Mina. She is looking for a
husband and her technique is seducing all her suitors, she is
decided and direct when she talks, but in a background she
wants to be loved just like Mina.

4. Explain the narrative technique.

The narrative technique is based on the character’s thoughts

which are expressed by diaries and letters. The movie shows
how Mina puts all her thoughts in her diary and Jonathan does
the same.
