How do I get started?

Book your introductory flight! An Intro-Flight is usually half an hour where the instructor will explain the basics of
flying and let you take control of the aircraft to experience first-hand what fixed wing aircraft flying is all about.
This half hour flight can be added in your personal Pilot’s logbook should you decide to go ahead with your PPL
training.
If you have a PPL / CPL, or done partial training thereof, we will do an individual evaluation and set up a training
plan on what is required to complete your license or advise you on your next step of training.

Upon acceptance and registration, a Pilot Starter Kit will be given, and you will be assigned a Flight Instructor to
guide you through your training. Before training can commence a medical examination will be booked for you in
order to determine if you are physically fit for flying. Pilots can wear glasses or contact lenses to correct vision.

Private Pilot License
A Private Pilot License (PPL) is seen as a license for people who want to pursue aviation as a hobby.
This qualification allows you to be pilot in command for private use, i.e fly for pleasure or business, personal
transportation and carry passengers during daytime and in clear weather conditions.
A PPL is also the starting point for a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) should you wish to ultimately become a
professional pilot.

Requirements for Student and Private Pilot License

Ab-initio - Student Pilot License (SPL)
1. You must be 15 years of age; however training may commence before this age.
2. A medical examination (Class 1 or 2) must be done by a qualified aviation medical doctor.
3. You must pass a technical examination of the aircraft chosen to train on, and a student pilot license exam.
4. Pay the fee to issue the SPL. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) will allocate a License
number which will enable you to start writing your PPL theory exams. Students who prove to be proficient
enough after a minimum of 10 hrs dual flying will be sent for the first time Solo – minimum age is 16 years
old. This is a truly memorable experience, which signifies your official entry into the prestigious group of
Aviators.

Private Pilot License (PPL)

1. You must hold a valid Student Pilot License.
2. You will need to accumulate a minimum of 45 hrs of flight training, of which: minimum 25 hrs Dual flight
instruction, minimum 15 hrs Solo (this must include at least 5 hrs solo cross-country flying)
3. Successfully pass 8 online theoretical examinations (pass mark 75%)
4. Pass an English Language Proficiency Test (if required) with a level 4 or above.
5. Complete a Restricted Radio License course.
6. You must be 17 years of age to take your 2 practical flight tests. The first being a General Flight Test
(GFT) which will focus on your ability to handle the aircraft in any situation. The second test is a cross-
country Navigation Test which will focus on your ability to navigate safely with the examiner on a planned
triangular route within a controlled air space and perform landings at other airfields away from base.
7. Once you have achieved competency and passed all practical and theoretical requirements, your training
documentation will be checked and sent to the CAA. A fee must be paid for issuing the PPL and finally
have your SPL upgraded to a PPL.

Night Rating
This qualification has the same privileges as a PPL with the added ability to fly during night times - between
sunset and sunrise. You will learn to utilize and rely on the instruments in the aircraft without being restricted
when planning and executing a flight.

Requirements for Night Rating (NR)

1. You must hold a valid Private Pilot License.
2. You will need to complete 10 hrs Dual Instrument Flying. At least 5 take-offs and landings must be done by
night and a night cross-country flight of at least 150nm with 2 full stop landings at 2 separate airfields away
from base. (These 10 hrs will count towards your Instrument rating).
3. Pass an online examination.
4. Minimum of 5 hours briefings.
5. Pass a practical night/IF flight test with a Grade II Flight Instructor.
6. Once you have achieved competency and passed all practical and theoretical requirements, your training
documentation will be checked and sent to the CAA. A fee must be paid to include the night rating on your
PPL License.

2
Commercial Pilot License
A Commercial Pilot License is required when pursuing a professional career in aviation.
This qualification allows you to receive remuneration for your flying activities.
Training is done on a variable pitch & retractable gear aircraft, either on an advanced Single Engine or a Multi-
engine aircraft. A Multi-Engine Rating is recommended when doing your CPL.
An Instrument Rating is usually done with the CPL course and enables a pilot to fly by solely relying on the flight
instruments.

Requirements for Commercial Pilot License (CPL) including Instrument Rating (IF)
1. You must be 18 years of age.
2. Hold a Class 1 medical certificate.
3. Hold a valid PPL and Night Rating.
4. You will need to accumulate a minimum of 200 hrs of flying, of which:
A minimum of 100 hrs as pilot in command (PIC) is required, of which at least 50 hrs must be cross
country flight time and 5 hrs must be done at Night.
40 hrs must be instrument flight training, of which 20 hrs may be done on an approved simulator (10 hrs
already done through PPL and Night Rating courses)
5. Pass 10 theoretical examinations at CAA (pass mark 75%)
6. Complete a General Radio License course.
7. Pass a CPL Ground Evaluation and Practical Flight Test in an advanced type aircraft and Simulator with a
CAA approved Designated Flight Examiner.
The instrument rating test is usually combined with the CPL flight test.
8. Once you have achieved competency and passed all practical and theoretical requirements, your training
documentation will be checked and sent to the CAA. A fee must be paid for issuing the CPL to have your
PPL upgraded to a CPL.

Instructor Rating
Graduates that have completed their CPL will normally choose to do an Instructors Rating to gain experience and
increase their marketability as a professional pilot. This rating will allow you to work as a Grade III Flight
Instructor and build hours simultaneously. The aim of the instructor rating course is to teach the techniques and
methods used to provide competent ground and flight instruction to new ab-initio students training towards their
PPL. This involves undergoing individual skills testing, evaluation, and preparation.

Requirements for Instructor Rating

1. You must hold a valid Commercial Pilot License or Airline Transport Pilot License.
2. Complete 20 hours of Flight Instructor Patter (Learning to teach on the right side of the cockpit while
providing feedback to the student)
3. Pass 2 theoretical online examinations.
4. Do 60 hours of ground and air instruction Briefings, homework, preparation, and compile your own
personal Instructor file.
5. Pass a combined theoretical and practical flight test with a CAA approved Designated Flight Examiner.
6. Once you have achieved competency and passed all practical and theoretical requirements, your training
documentation will be checked and sent to the CAA. A fee must be paid to include the Instructor rating on
your CPL License.

Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)

In order to operate as pilot in command on large commercial multi crew aircraft, an Airline Transport Pilot License
(ATPL) must be obtained. This is the highest obtainable License in the aviation industry which enables you to
become an Airline Captain.
Requirements for ATPL
1. You must be 21 years of age.
2. Hold a Class 1 medical certificate
3. Hold a Commercial Pilot License with Instrument Rating.
4. Successfully pass 6 theoretical examinations at CAA.
5. You will need to accumulate a minimum of 1500 hrs of flying, of which 250 must be as pilot in command
(PIC),100 hrs must be night flight time, 200 hrs must be cross county flying. A minimum of 75 hours must
be instrument flight time of which 30 hours may be accumulated on a simulator
This will need a considerable amount of time to acquire, and is normally gained during your course of
employment as a CPL pilot.
6. You must complete a practical flight test on a multi-engine aircraft or simulator with simulated multi-crew
and instrument flight rules (IFR) scenario with a CAA approved Grade I Designated Flight Examiner.
You may write the ATPL theoretical examinations before you have 1500 hours, known as a “Frozen ATPL”,
until you meet these hour requirements.

How long will it take me?
Course Duration
Full time students that fly a minimum of 4 lessons per week will take:
3 - 4 months to complete their PPL & NR
12-14 months to complete their CPL
15-18 months from zero to CPL
3 – 4 months to complete their Instructor Rating
3 – 4 months to do ATPL theoretical course and exam subjects

You may fly and train daily 7 days a week should you wish to complete courses faster.

Why train at Rand Airport
Rand airport is in close proximity to the General Flying Area and other major airports giving the student more
flying time per lesson and as a result training being done more efficiently. It has four different runway directions
to accommodate any wind conditions and access to navigational facilities. It is a manned airport with air traffic
control in a controlled airspace, allowing for radio and other procedures being practiced properly. In addition, it is
less congested with no time delays unlike other busy airports. Great weather conditions all year round in a
friendly atmosphere and clear spectator viewing for family and friends from the Airport restaurant cafe.

What Career opportunities are out there?

The aviation industry has always experienced steady growth worldwide. Airline companies continuously search
for first class trained pilots in order to expand their fleet and broaden their networks. South African pilots have
been rated among the top worldwide due to the high standard of aviation training in the country and consistent
quality assurance checks being done by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has forecast a need for 466,650 more commercial pilots by the year 2029 – an
average of 23,300 new pilots a year. Within the next 10 years there will be the longest and largest pilot hiring
boom in the history of the Aviation Industry.

Other options of employment may be charter flying, contract flying, corporate and cargo flying, agricultural flying,
survey flying, film and photography flying and Instructor flying.
Graduates that have just completed their CPL will normally choose to do an Instructors Rating. This rating will
allow you to work as a flight Instructor and build hours simultaneously. Airline companies usually require pilots
with no less than 1000 hours of flying time and Charter companies with no less than 500 hours.
