1 Introduction
Outline
The optical interface unit (GIF200) is used to connect with the multiplexer (MUX), when the
line protection relay (GRL200 IED having a protection-signaling module in ST port) is
required to connect with the remote GLR200 IED in the switched communication network
achieved with the MUX. The signals of the GIF200 unit are complied with the IEEE C37.94
standard and the ITU-T G.703 standards.

Connection and signal-conversion

The information of the line protection can be required to exchange in the telecommunication
protocol defined in the ITU-T G.703 (64kbps). Hence, the information of the IEEE C37.94
(N=3; 2048kbps) generated in the GRL200 IED should be converted in the ITU-T G.703
(64kbps) format. Figure 1.2-1 illustrates the line protection structure achieved with the
GRL200 IEDs together with GIF200 units and the MUXs.

In most situations, the telecommunications equipment is remote from the protection

equipment in the substation. The GIF200 unit is normally located closed to the MUX and may
be up to 2km away from the GRL200 IED. The fiber optic cable must be 50/125μm or
62.5/125μm for distance up to 2km; it should be terminated with standard ST type connectors.
The GIF200 is connected to the switched telecommunication network via a MUX, and the
interface is defined according to the ITU-T G.703 standard. The connections should be made
using shielded, twisted pair cable.

2 Settings and operations

Figure 2.1-1 shows the outline of the GIF200 unit. Two optical modules (E/O and O/E with ST
port) for the IEEE C37.94 and a CN1 (D-sub 25-pin or DB-25) socket for the ITU-T G.703 are
provided; the TB1 terminal is provided for the DC power input.

Overview
The O/E and E/O conversion is performed on both transmit and receive signals from the
GRL200 IED respectively. The optical signals are encoded in CMI type (50% duty factor) and
it makes the signals easy to be checked during commissioning. Code conversion is performed
for connection to the ITU-T G.703, which is a synchronous interface and provides a 64 kHz
timing signal, which the GIF200 uses for synchronization†.

†Note:When GIF200 unit has lost clock signals coming from MUX, GIF200 unit can send
signals to MUX using GIF200 internal clock signal. This self-running is only
applicable when GIF200 unit is produced in the ITU-T G.703/contra-directional.

Signal control on failures

Signal control is carried out when errors or failures occur in the communication. The following
cases are exemplified.

(i) Loss of signal (LOS) in C37.94

If two or more errors are found in eight consecutive receive frames, an LOS (loss of signal)
command is issued within one millisecond in the GIF200 unit. The LOS command is cleared,
if erroneous data is not found in the last eight consecutive frames.

(ii) MUX operation when LOS being detected

During LOS condition at its optical receive port, the GIF200 changes the “Yellow alarm bit” of

GIF200
- 4 -
6F2S1916 (0.5)

C37.94 frame from ‘0’ to ‘1’ for a return path from the GIF200 to the GRL2000. Incidentally,
the GIF200 sets all ‘1’ bits for the frames (alarm indication signal (AIS)) from GIF200 to the
MUX.

(iii) Erroneous data with three yellow alarms (without LOS)

When ‘Yellow alarm bit’ and no erroneous signal (LOS) is found in the three consecutive
receive frames from the IED, it is considered the path is “Yellow”. During the Yellow path
condition, the GIF200 replaces the data bits to all ‘1’s for the frames from GIF200 to the IED,
and TX in C37.94 and RX in G.703 LEDs will be off. The Yellow path condition can be cleared
when ‘Yellow alarm bit’ is not found in the last three consecutive receive frames, or when the
LOS signal is detected.

Operations for detecting errors in G.703 and C37.94

Following cases show GIF200 operation against detection of erroneous data in G.703 and
C37.94 frames.

(i) No data received in C37.94

If the GIF200 unit does not receive any data from the IED, it can be detected by the
bit-inversion check function and the GIF200 will set ‘1’ to “Yellow alarm bit” in TX data to be
sent to the GRL200 IED in C37.94 and to the MUX in G.703 (of which frame format is in
accordance with G.703). LEDs for CF in C37.94 will be on.

(ii) LOS failure detected in GIF200

If the GIF200 unit receives erroneous data from the GRL200, which can be detected by the
LOS command, the GIF200 will set ‘1’ to “Yellow alarm bit” in TX data to be sent to the
GRL200, and all the bits will be set to ‘1’ (AIS) in G.703 frames for MUX. LED for TX in G.703
LEDs will be off and LED for CF in C37.94 will be on.

Bit synchronization for sending

Synchronized multiplexing should be carried out with any data received from a number of
GIF200 units. Thereby, within the GIF200 unit, the transmission clock for the MUX should be
synchronized with the transmission signal in the C37.94 format. As the transmit/receive
circuit between the GRL200 IED and the GIF200 needs to run in parallel with an oscillator
(2048kHz) of the GIF200 unit, the oscillator is synchronized with the receiving data in the
ITU-T G.703 (64kbps).

Note that the GRL200 IED is forbidden to operate without a clock signal coming from
the GIF200 unit. That is, in the GRL200 IED, transmit and receive signals should be
synchronized with the oscillator within the GIF200 unit. Thus, the user should check to see
that the GRL200 IED needs to operate with the oscillator of the GIF200 unit†.

†Note:The user may be required to set On for the scheme switch [CH1_B.SYN] in the
GRL200 IED, which is to connect with the MUX through the GIF200 unit, provided
that the protection signaling module at C13 on the rear. For more information
about the communication with the MUX, see the section Communication setup of
Chapter Relay application: Transmission control function in the GRL200 IED
instruction manual.

3 Installation
On receiving the GIF200 unit, carry out the acceptance inspection immediately. In particular,
check for damage during transportation, and if any is found, contact the vendor. Always store
the unit in a clean, dry environment.

Mounting
Refer to Appendix for details of mechanical fixings.

Electrostatic Discharge
CAUTION

The printed circuit board (PCB) within the unit is not intended to be a removable module. Do
not remove the PCB from the unit case, since electronic components on the PCB are very
sensitive to electrostatic discharge. If it is absolutely essential to take the PCB out of the case,
do not touch the electronic components and terminals with your bare hands. Additionally,
always put the PCB in a conductive anti-static bag when storing it.

Handling Precautions
A person's normal movements can easily generate electrostatic potential of several thousand
volts. Discharge of these voltages into semiconductor devices when handling electronic
circuits can cause serious damage, which often may not be immediately apparent but the
reliability of the circuit will have been reduced.

The electronic circuits are completely safe from electrostatic discharge when housed in
the case. Do not expose them to risk of damage by removing the PCB unnecessarily.

The unit incorporates the highest practicable protection for its semiconductor devices.
However, if it becomes necessary to remove the PCB, precautions should be taken to preserve
the high reliability and long life for which the equipment has been designed and
manufactured.

CAUTION

 Before removing the PCB, ensure that you are at the same electrostatic potential as the
equipment by touching the case.
 Handle only the edges of the PCB. Avoid touching the electronic components, PCB surface
or connectors.
 Do not pass the PCB to another person without first ensuring you are both at the same
electrostatic potential. Shaking hands achieves equipotential.
 Place the PCB on an anti-static surface, or on a conducting surface which is at the same

GIF200
- 8 -
6F2S1916 (0.5)

potential as yourself.
 Do not place the PCB in a polystyrene tray.

It is strongly recommended that detailed investigations on electronic circuitry should be

carried out in a Special Handling Area such as described in the IEC 60747.

4 Commissioning and maintenance

The GIF200 unit should be commissioned in conjunction with the GRL200 IED with which it
is specified. Test personnel must be familiar with general relay testing practices and safety
precautions to avoid personal injuries or equipment damage.

Precautions
 The unit is provided with a grounding terminal.
 Before starting the work, always make sure the unit is grounded.
 Ensure that the auxiliary supply connections are properly fixed to their terminals.
 Before turning on the power, check that the polarity and voltage of the power supply are
correct.
 Turn off the auxiliary supply before checking the interior of the unit.
 While the power is on, do not mount/dismount the PCB.
 Failure to observe any of the precautions above may cause damage or malfunction of the
unit. Refer to the preceding section for information on handling precautions.

Preparation
(i) Test equipment
The following test equipment is required for the commissioning tests.
• DC power supply.
• Calibrated voltmeter.
(ii) Visual inspection
After unpacking the product, check for any damage to the case. If there is any damage, the
internal module might also have been affected. Contact the vendor.
(iii) Unit ratings
Check that the items described on the nameplate on the front of the unit conform to the user’s
specification. The items are: unit type and model, and auxiliary DC supply voltage rating.

Commissioning Procedure
Refer to the GRL200 IED instruction manual for full details. It is necessary to commission
both ends of the protection scheme together. Ensure that all necessary communication
connections are made at each end of the protection scheme. Apply auxiliary power to both
GRL200 IEDs and to both GIF200 units. Any failure in the communication will be instructed
with the message of the GRL200 IEDs; if the user can figure out the communication is on
order, proceed with the commissioning about the GRL200 IEDs.

Maintenance
Periodic maintenance is not necessary.
