Rotate your body (with your guitar strapped on) until the hum goes away. Sounds simple, but it works, especially at low
volume. If, on the other hand, you're trying to record a part that requireshigh gain and high level, some hum is inevitable
(even if you're pointed at true magnetic NortM).
3 If you're playing a lead, or a part that comes up in specific places in the song, punch
in to record right before the beat you enter on, and punch out of record a split second
after you finish the part.
4 There are in-line noise gates that help, but most are inexpensively built and tend to
alter the sound. Top-notch studio quality noise gates will alter the sound less, but cost
hundreds of dollars more. If you do use a gate, be sure to adjust the attack and decay
times for optimum performance, and set the threshold about a hair and a half further
than you think it should be. Don't ask why, but the things sound better when not tee-
tering right on the edge of the threshold.
5 The most practical way to eliminate hum? Get yourself into some lace. (I'm talking
about Lace Sensor pickups here, not Victoria's Secret lingerie! Fender offers many
combinations of pickups with different tone and noise characteristics. Lace Sensors is

playing scalar or chord patterns, and they don't think about
the sound of it. They don't think, "how does the voicing that
I'm choosing here affect the way the song's being presented,
and the dynamics of the song?"
That's the key to making music instead of just playing your
instrument. What we're about as a band is making music as a
trio, and I think you could give all three of us any three instru-
ments and we would still come up with some music that is
characteristic of what we are and what our influences are.
With five strings, we can play any chord under the sun—a
minor seventh flat five with a sharp eleven if we want to—and
all the tonal elements are there. One of the nice things,
though, is that the instrument is tuned in fifths, and a fifth is
ambiguous—not necessarily minor or major. That frees us up
melodically to move from minor to major and yet stay in the
same chord progression.
FF: There is also quite a wide range of dynamics in your music.
DD: We work hard on that together, to make the song breathe,
to make it more than just a 2- or 3- or 4-minute blast that's all
at the same intensity level.
I am sort of in charge of dynamics in the sense of increase
in volume or changing the texture of the harmonic content of
the music, by changing to a
. 6' , more distorted sound or using
a fuzz box and a phase shifter.
And on a Strat, the five way
selector lets you get a pretty amazing variety of sounds.
FF: Is a Strat your main guitar?
DD: Yeah, I'm playing a Mexican Strat right now. Strats and
Telecasters are really the only guitars I like very much at all.
Plus I have this amazing Fender Custom Shop cabinet (a Tone-
Master 412—ed.). It's fairly compact yet very deep, so it seems
to have really tight and powerful low end, which is important
for the way we're tuned.
FF: How did the Presidents' sound evolve?
DD: For a long time it was basically two acoustic guitars, and
singing. As we've gained popularity, we've had to put on a completely different kind of show. We've become
We've much more of a rock band in the last nine months.
FF: Has the success been overwhelming?
become DD: I think if I were a young punk out of high school and had the success we've had in the last six months, I
would have had a nervous breakdown by now. We've played on The Tonight Show and The Letterman Show—

The Ventures' Legacy
Lives On] 'n 1960, the Ventures had the No. 2 hit in the
•nation with Walk Don't Run — two minutes of
smooth, vibrato-bar-charged lead guitar work, echoey
chord changes, pulsating bass, and solid, in-your-face
drumming.
From that point on, instrumental music's floodgates
rhythms, crashes and rolls on tunes such as Perfidia, "Walk Don't Run," it was Nokie
Slaughter on 10th Avenue, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Pipeline Edwards' versatile and melodic guitar
and Wipeout. (continued on page 42) work played amidst a wash of reverb
and vibrato that would lend the combo
their unmistakeable, trademark sound.
Before joining the Ventures in 1959,
Nokie was backing up country legend
Buck Owens. "Bob and Don came into a
club that Buck ^Jc^i was working
in Tacoma,
Washington, and
they saw me playing
and liked what they
heard," Nokie recalls.
"They then asked me if
I'd join up with them
and I said yes."
Nokie recorded and
performed with the Ven-
tures until 1 967, and
then rejoined the group
briefly in the early 70s before leaving
again to pursue a dual career as
solo artist and session musician in
Nashville. Among the many country
artists he's backed over the years, in
addition to- Buck Owens, are Lefty
Frizzell, Ferlin Husky and Glen Campbell.
More recently, Nokie has recorded an
album titled Nokie's Celebration, which
includes standout renditions of a variety
of tunes such as "Sir Duke," "Penelope,"
"Long Train Runnin'" and "The Shadow
of Your Smile." [If you'd like to order a
copy, write to Nokie Edwards USA Fan
Club/ P.O. Box 370, Brownsville, OR

conducting guitar workshops across
the U.S. in addition to recording a
country album with David Frizzell.
