SPOT THE DIFFERENCES:

SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT AND
GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY
Prepared by:

LEA P. MONTERON, LPT

GEC-103 Instructor
LESSON OBJECTIVES
• Differentiate stability from sustainability;
• Articulate models of global sustainable
development; and
• Present an authentic sustainable
development plan amidst pandemic.
STABILITY
VS.
SUSTAINABILITY
❑ The condition of being stable or
in equilibrium, and
thus resistant to change.
❑ Resistance to change,
deterioration, or displacement;

STABILITY ❑ Constancy of character or

purpose, steadfastness;
❑ Reliability and dependability;
❑ Not prone to wild fluctuations in
emotion.
❑ An example of stability is a calm,
stable life where you don't have wild
ups and downs.
Sustainability is a paradigm for thinking about
the future in which environmental, societal
and economic considerations are balanced in
the pursuit of an improved quality of life.
Sustainability improves the quality of our
lives, protects our ecosystem and
SUSTAINABILITY preserves natural resources for future
generations.
Sustainability is most often defined as
meeting the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet theirs.
For example, a prosperous society relies on a
healthy environment to provide food and
resources, safe drinking water and clean air
Pillars of
Sustainability
1. ECONOMIC
2. ENVIRONMENT
3. SOCIAL
1. PROFIT
2. PLANET
3. PEOPLE
01 ECONOMIC
➢ This pillar is referred to as the governance pillar,
referring to good corporate governance. This
means that boards of directors and management
align with shareholders' interests as well as that of
the company's community, value chains, and end-
user customers.
➢ The economic pillar of sustainability is where most
businesses feel they are on firm ground. To be
sustainable, a business must be profitable.
➢ Activities that fit under the economic pillar include
compliance, proper governance and risk
management.
➢02 ENVIRONMENTAL
Environmental sustainability aims to improve
human welfare through the protection of natural
capital (e.g. land, air, water, minerals etc.)
➢ Environmental sustainability, as described by
Dunphy, Benveniste, Griffiths and Sutton (2000),
places emphasis on how business can achieve
positive economic outcomes without doing any
harm, in the short- or long-term, to the
environment.
➢ According to Dunphy et al. (2000) an
environmentally sustainable business seeks to
integrate all four sustainability pillars, and to reach
this aim each one needs to be treated equally.
➢03 SOCIAL PILLAR
Social sustainability aims to preserve social
capital by investing and creating services that
constitute the framework of our society.
➢ Social sustainability focuses on maintaining
and improving social quality with concepts
such as cohesion, reciprocity and honesty and
the importance of relationships amongst
people.
➢ Social sustainability incorporates the idea of
sustainable development as defined by the
United Nations sustainable development
goals.
What is
Sustainable
Development?
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
● Sustainable development is the overarching
paradigm of the United Nations. The concept of
sustainable development was described by the 1987
Bruntland Commission Report as “development that
meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs.”
● Sustainable development refers to the many
processes and pathways to achieve it (e.g.
sustainable agriculture and forestry, sustainable
production and consumption, good government,
research and technology transfer, education and
training, etc.).

you want to talk about Mercury, you can
say that it’s the smallest planet in the entire
Solar System
