8901 SERIES FAN INLET TEMPERATURE SENSOR ASSEMBLY
TASK 73-21-71-99C-001
1. General
A. This manual contains shop maintenance instruction and ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST
for 8901 Series Fan Inlet Temperature (FIT) Sensor Assembly (Figure 1) developed
and manufactured by Woodward Aircraft Engine Systems.
TASK 73-21-71-870-801
2. Description
A. The FIT Sensor Assembly (Figure 1) is a temperature sensor and transducer unit for
the Main Engine Control. It responds to changes in fan inlet temperature and regulates
fuel pressure (P7) as a function of inlet temperature.
TASK 73-21-71-870-802
3. Operation
A. The main operating elements of the FIT Sensor Assembly (Figure 2) are:
B. The sensing coil in temperature probe (25), sense bellows assembly (20), and small-diameter
connecting tube are filled with helium gas. A change in air temperature passing the coil in
temperature probe (25) changes the pressure of the helium, which in turn changes the force exerted
by the sense bellows assembly (20). When temperature increases, gas pressure increases.
C. Helium charge pressure (pressure at room temperature) is set to get the required change
in sensor output over the range of sensed air temperature.
D. A helium-filled reference bellow assembly (5) responds to fuel temperature. Its charge pressure
(pressure at room temperature) is set to optimize fuel temperature effects on sensor output.
E. The stem, which connects the bellows assemblies and holds the moveable seat, passes
through the fixed seat. Threads on the stem permit the reference bellows assembly (5) to
be rotated to make level changes in sensor output. Rotating the reference bellows assembly
(5) changes its length, which changes the force the bellows exerts.
F. Two preload springs (15) balance the helium pressure in the sense bellows assembly
(20). Spacers under the outer spring (15) compensate for slight deviations from nominal
value in sense bellows assembly (20) operating length.
G. Fuel is supplied to the FIT Sensor Assembly through a fixed orifice in the Main Engine
Control (MEC). The pressure upstream of the orifice (Pc) is maintained at a constant
level above the sensor discharge pressure (Pb). The differential between the pressure
downstream of this orifice (P6) and the discharge pressure (Pb) is set by the FIT Sensor
Assembly and is proportional to the sensed air temperature.
H. An increase in air temperature raises the pressure in the sense bellows assembly (20), which
causes the moveable seat to move slightly toward the fixed seat. This reduces the flow through
the FIT Sensor Assembly, and decreases the pressure drop across the fixed supply orifice,
which increases P6 until the forces acting on the moveable seat become balanced.
I. The effective areas of the sense bellows assembly (20) and the reference bellows assembly
(5) are closely matched to minimize the effect of changing Pb pressure on FIT Sensor
Assembly output (P6-Pb). If areas are perfectly matched, changes in Pb will require the
exact change in P6 to balance the forces acting on the moveable seat.
L. These other forces may act to open or close the valve (10):
(1) Force from axial deflection of diaphragm which centers the moveable valve seat,
(2) Forces from extension or compression of the bellows assemblies (5, 20).

SUBTASK 73-21-71-770-101
A. Visual Inspection
(1) Inspect exterior of FIT Sensor Assembly (5, Figure 102) for indication of bulb charge loss.
(2) When bulb charge is lost, sensor can be repaired per FAA-approved Woodward repair
drawings, 9401-651, 9402-396, 9402-432 and/or 9402-433. Because of the proprietary
nature or process criticality of this Woodward repair, the sensor must be sent to an
OEM-authorized repair facility when the coil charge is lost.
(4) Remove P7 fitting (15) and inspect inside of fitting (15) and inside of port for
contamination if P7 fitting (15) appears to be contaminated.
NOTE: If P7 fitting (15) appears heavily contaminated, check both fittings (10, 15) for
flow restriction after you do as-received calibration check.
NOTE: If inside of P7 port is contaminated, disassemble and clean FIT Sensor Assembly
(5) per DISASSEMBLY after you do as-received calibration check.
(5) Install P7 fitting (15) on FIT Sensor Assembly (5) again and go to Valve Air Leakage Test.

(1) Use WT-54285 flowmeter to supply 20 PSIG (138 kPa) air to P7 fitting (15,
Figure 103) and check FIT Sensor Assembly valve air leakage. Record reading
if leakage exceeds 0.2 SCFH (0,01 SCMH).
NOTE: High leakage at 200 degrees Fahrenheit indicates one of the following:
Bulb charge has been lost.
Valve seats or sense bellows extension stop have trapped a particle.
Reference bellows internal compressed stop is holding valve open.
(b) Check seat assembly (20) and valve seat of sense bellows assembly (25) if
leakage does not go down to less than 1 SCFH (0,03 SCMH).
(c) Remove reference bellows (5) from FIT Sensor Assembly per DISASSEMBLY.
(d) Immerse probe of FIT Sensor Assembly in 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93
degrees Celsius) bath, and check air leakage again.
(e) Remove probe of FIT Sensor Assembly from bath, disconnect pressure, and drain
excess fuel from reference bellows area, if leakage is still high.
(f) Use a microscope (Table 102) to inspect for contamination trapped between seat
assembly (20, Figure 103) and valve seat of sense bellows assembly (25).
(h) If leakage is more than 5 SCFH and no contamination is found, the sensor can
be repaired per FAA-approved Woodward repair drawings 9401-651, 9402-396,
9402-433, and/or 9402-432. Because of the proprietary nature or process
criticality of this Woodward repair, the sensor must be sent to an OEM-authorized
repair facility when the leakage is more than 5 SCFH.

C. Calibration Test
(1) Install FIT Sensor Assembly (5, Figure 104) on test stand, as shown.
(2) Set value on Pc-Pb gauge (40, Figure 104), and value on Pb gauge (25) per Table 103.
(a) Decrease value on Pc-Pb gauge (40, Figure 104) from approximately
250 PSID (1724 kPa) and then increase value on Pc-Pb gauge (40) from
approximately 170 PSID (1172 kPa).
(c) Record hysteresis on test sheet if difference is greater than 0.2 PSID (1,4 kPa).
(6) Set value on Pb gauge (25, Figure 104) at 105 PSIG (724 kPa).
(7) Reduce value on Pc-Pb gauge (40) and note value on P7-Pb gauge (20) when value
on Pc-P7 gauge (35) = 1 PSI (7 kPa) and again when value on Pc-P7 gauge (35) = 2
PSI (14 kPa). Maximum allowable P7-Pb increase is 0.6 PSI (4,2 kPa).
NOTE: FIT Sensor Assembly (5) will need to be disassembled if P7-Pb increase
is greater than 0.6 PSI (4,2 kPa).
(9) Use WT-137248 test fixture to check fittings (15, Figure 104) for flow restriction if sensor rate
(output change from 0 to max temperature) is low or if fittings (15) appear heavily contaminated.
NOTE: Contaminated fittings (15) increase output and lower rate at all temperatures.
NOTE: Output may be below limit if output was adjusted after fittings (15)
became contaminated.
(10) Test FIT Sensor Assembly (5) with slave fittings (10) if fittings (15) have flow restriction. Use
only the test points required to determine if output is in-limits or adjustable to limits.

(11) When rate is low and fittings (15) do not have flow restriction, the FIT Sensor Assembly
(5) can be repaired per FAA-approved Woodward repair drawings 9401-651, 9402-396,
9402-432 and/or 9402-433. Because of the proprietary nature or process criticality of this
Woodward repair, the FIT Sensor Assembly (5) must be sent to an OEM-authorized repair
facility when the rate is low and the fittings (15) do not have flow restriction.
(12) Go to Output Adjustment if output is out-of-limits but FIT Sensor Assembly (5) is
otherwise functioning properly, and if no disassembly is required.
(13) Use the As-Received test as the As-Shipped test if FIT Sensor Assembly (5) meets all
requirements of the as-received visual inspection and calibration test.
(14) Use the As-Received test as the As-Shipped test if FIT Sensor Assembly (5) meets
all requirements of the as-received visual inspection and calibration test except for
fitting (15) flow restriction. In that case, do the following:
(c) Install new fittings (15) if the pressure drop across both new fittings (15) is within
0.1 PSIA (1,4 kPa) of the drop across both old fittings.

STORAGE
TASK 73-21-71-550-1501
A. Preserve FIT Sensor Assembly (5, Figure 1501) as follows if it will be stored for more than 30 days:
(1) Drain MIL-PRF-7024 calibrating fluid (Table 101) from FIT Sensor Assembly (5, Figure 1501).
(2) Apply Winsor L-110 engine lubricating oil (Table 101) to P7 port at 75-200
PSI (517-1379 kPa) until oil runs out Pb port.
(5) Remove shipping and storage parts and flush the FIT Sensor Assembly (5) with
MIL-PRF-7024 calibrating fluid (Table 101) twice to remove Winsor L-110 engine lubricating
oil before installing FIT Sensor Assembly (5, Figure 1501) for use.

TASK 73-21-71-99C-810
1. Introduction
(1) The ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST (IPL) has three sections: Introduction,
Numerical Index, and Detailed Parts List.
(2) The purpose of the IPL is to list and illustrate each assembly and detail part of
the Fan Inlet Temperature (FIT) Sensor Assembly.
B. Numerical Index
(1) The Numerical Index is a list of every part number in the Detailed Parts List giving figure
and item locations. When a vendor or government standard part number is used in lieu
of a Woodward number, the Woodward part number references that number.
(2) The number listed in the TTL REQ (Total Required) column is the total
quantity required at the location indicated.
(1) The Detailed Parts List consists of an illustration of the FIT Sensor Assembly
and a tabular listing of parts within the assembly.
(a) Item numbers in the Detailed Parts List correspond to item numbers
on the figure illustration.
(a) Parts manufactured by Woodward are listed by the Woodward part number.
(b) Parts not manufactured by Woodward are listed by the vendor’s part number.
(c) Where government standard parts (except threaded fasteners) are used, the
applicable AN, M, MS, or NAS number is listed.
(d) When NO NUMBER appears in the Part Number Column, the part is nonprocurable.

8901 SERIES FAN INLET TEMPERATURE SENSOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Indent numerals preceding part nomenclature relate each part to other
assemblies and detail parts. The next higher assembly of a number two item
is the first number one assembly preceding that part.
(b) Nomenclature of parts is generally listed (just noun) in accordance with drawing title.
(c) When parts are purchased from manufacturers other than Woodward, the
vendor’s part number is listed in the Part Number Column and the Commercial
and Government Entity (CAGE) code appears in parentheses following the
letter V (vendor) in the Nomenclature Column.
(d) In cases where a vendor’s part number or a government standard part number
appears in the Part Number Column, the Woodward part number appears in
parentheses in the Nomenclature Column following the letters WG.
(e) All preformed packings with Parker number L806-80 have been replaced by packings
with Parker number L1218-80. Parker has changed materials to meet environmental
requirements. The Woodward number for all preformed packings stays the same.
(f) Dimensions listed are nominal. Metric equivalent dimensions follow in parentheses.
(g) Attaching parts are listed immediately beneath the item to be attached and precede any
detail parts of that item. The end of attaching parts is indicated by the symbol ***.
(h) ORDER NHA, ITEM XX will follow part nomenclature when the item is a matched
part and nonprocurable. NHA means Next Higher Assembly. The next higher
assembly is not necessarily the previously listed part.
(a) When more than one model is included in the IPL, each model will be assigned
a reference letter to identify parts differences.
(b) Applicable reference letters are listed for a part used on more than one model.
(c) If the column is blank, the part is used on all models included in the IPL.
