DESIGN AREA: ME Department 2nd Floor - 4 ADJACENT ROOMS (257 – 260)

Calculate the air conditioning loads of rooms 257, 258, 259, and 260 based on the
following:

1. Occupants.
2. Lightings.
3. Air Infiltration.
4. Heat Transmission through building walls.
5. Solar Radiation effect through building walls.
6. Other miscellaneous load.

The PLAN view and the Elevation views of the ME Department 2nd Floor buildingindicating the
dimensions of the walls, windows and doors (estimated values of dimensions are acceptable)
are provided. Tabulate the Air Conditioning Load and classify them according to sensible heat
loads and latent heat loads with its corresponding cooling load factor, CLF.

Problem:
Select a DX type or Chilled Water type Air Cooler that could handle the refrigeration load as
estimated in Design Plate # 1. Indicate the main Air Cooler specifications such as:
a) Refrigeration Capacity, TOR
b) Cooled-Dehumidified air, m3/s or liter/s
c) Apparatus Dewpoint Temperature (ADP)
d) Grand Sensible Heat Factor (GSHF)
e) Coil Bypass Factor (BPF)
Make justified assumptions if needed. Attach the reference Air Cooler performance Table.

SOLUTION

From the table, for classrooms use ACH = 12 units/hour

From the Table:
For solving QO use air rate of 3.8 L/s-person and 0.3 L/s-m2
Given that qS = 43 451.04 W and factor of safety 30 %
From the Law of the conservation of mass and energy on mixing junction with changes in
Potential and Kinetic Energy as negligible:

Summary:

Room Outside Supply Mixture

tR = 24 C tO = 34 C tS = 14.9339 C tm = 25.5755 C
vO = 0.904 m3/kg da vR = 0.856 m3/kg da hS = 37.46 kJ/kg da hm = 57.3 kJ/kg da
mR = 5.2489 kg da/s
Unit Selection:
Comparing the computed by pass factor to the selected air cooling unit product data.

Design an air duct layout for proper distribution of an Airconditioned space of Design
Plate # 1 & # 2. Use Equal Friction Method in duct sizing of round and its equivalent
rectangular duct. Make necessary assumptions if needed. Tabulate the results like as shown
below (in English Unit or in Metric Unit):

Attach the plan view of the space with the proposed air duct layout. Show the Equal Friction Chart
and indicate the readings of Q, V, & D.

NOTE:

The general guide in air duct distribution.

a) simple as possible
b) symmetrical distribution
c) avoid hot spot area
d) avoid obstruction (light, beams, etc)
e) less duct fittings to maintain lower pressure loss
f) fan capacity is sufficiently enough to supply air & overcome pressure losses
g) properly locate the return duct terminals/grilles
