areas, swelling, or edema.
9. Emphasized any retraction by having the client
a. Raise the arms above the head.
b. Push the hands together, with elbows flexed.
c. Press the hands down on the hips.
10. Inspected the areola area for size, shape, symmetry, color, surface
characteristics, and any masses or lesions.
11. Inspected the nipples for size, shape, position, color, discharge, and
lesions.
12. Palpated the axillary, subclavicular, and supraclavicular lymph
nodes.
13. Palpated the breast for masses, tenderness, and any discharge from
the nipples using a systematic pattern.
14. Palpated the areolae and the nipples for masses, discharge, or
tenderness.
15. Taught the client the technique of breast self-examination.
Used effective body mechanics throughout procedure.
Communicated appropriately with the client.
Documented all relevant information.
