1 General survey
Power transformer is a major piece of equipment in the power transmission, transformation and distribution system
and the failure rate of a power transformer is closely related to the winding temperature of a transformer.When the
temperature of a transformer rises by 6℃, the ageing of a transformer will be doubled with its service life halved.
Proper use of a transformer and prompt switching of the cooling device in a transformer with a temperature measuring
controller can avoid or reduce fault due to over-temperature of a transformer, thereby extending its service life.
2 Thermal simulation
As the oil temperature on the top of a large capacity transformer lags behind the winding temperature
significantly, switching the cooling system of a transformer by a winding temperature signal can improve the
behavior of a transformer promptly and efficiently. Therefore a large capacity transformer usually switches
its cooling system by using a winding temperature signal. But direct measurement of the winding temperature
of a power transformer has resulted in a problem of high voltage isolation technologically. As a result at
present the technique of thermal simulation based on IEC 354 Loading Guide for Oil-immersed Transformers is
widely used at home and abroad in measuring the winding temperature of transformers indirectly.
According to IEC 354, the winding temperature of a transformer (Tw) is the sum of the oil temperature
(To)on the top of a transformer and temperature difference between copper and oil (Two), i.e., Tw=To+Two; of
which the oiltemperature can be obtained by measurement using a pressure thermometer, but the data on the
temperature difference between copper and oil that varies with transformer load has to be obtained through
thermal simulation.

The working principle of thermal simulation technique is shown in the above diagram. The additional current
Ict gained from the current transformer CT(a) proportional to the load current is transformed into Ih through the compound
transducer(b)(Ih is the working current sent artificially in line with the temperature difference between copper and
oil of a transformer after adjustment of Ict). Ih will heat a set of specially-designed electro-thermal elements(c)
fixed in the compound transducer and the additional temperature rise generated on the electro-thermal elements
proportional to the load current by the current is just the simulated temperature difference between copper and oil
Two, which is superimposed to the oil temperature To on the top of a transformer so that the temperature-controlled
package (d) of the winding thermometer may obtain the winding temperature of a transformer Tw=To + Two.
Based on the JB/T8450 Standard for Winding Thermometer for Transformers, when a current of 0.5~5.0 A is
fed to the transformer, the output current can meet the requirements for the following temperature rise curve.

1 Examples of test
Test conditions: Assume current transformer current Ict=3.140A, transformer copper-oil temperature rise △Two=10℃,
oil temperature (thermostat temperature)To=80℃.
Setting steps: Step 1: band switch is selected at 3.6 setting by Ict.
Step 2: in line with the temperature difference between copper and oil △T=10℃ and temperature
rise curve,the simulated temperature rise current is determined as 740mA.
Step 3: Potentiometer Rx is adjusted slightly so that Ih=740mA.
Temperature indication: As is shown in the figure below, after Ict, Ih and thermostat temperature are stabilized for 45 min,
90℃ should be displayed in the winding thermometer (To+△Two), two-way Pt100 resistance of compound transducer should be 134.70Ω,
90℃ displayed in the remote temperature display system with an output current of 13mA for the temperature conversion module(measuring
range of 0~160℃)

Note: The dial meter, temperature converter and remote temperature display meter all have the zero-setting function. Zero-setting
of the dial meter is done as follows: remove the cover of the meter and turn the zero-setting tap lightly with the socket screw
to “+”or“-”direction so that the pointer will be moved slightly in a zero-setting range of ±5℃. For zero-setting of temperature
converter and remote temperature display system, refer to the appropriate directions for use.

Note: Under no circumstances should the temperature pointer be dialed with an external force
and turned counterclockwise (towards 0℃ direction), otherwise the thermometer would be damaged.
3 Note
I. State clearly when selecting types if other measuring range is needed.
II. When wiring, do not hold down the internal parts with wires. Clear the common faults after wiring.
Turn the cover tightly clockwise. The red needle shall be on the right of the white one.
a.In case of indication deviation, please adjust the zero-setting socket with 4mm inner hexagon spanner.
b.In case of needle stuck, push the switch backward, turn the white needle to pass the switch and then let
go of the switch, and then let go of the white needle slowly. Reset switch motion to its original position.
III. Remove the water in the base of the thermometer before filling with oil. Seal the thermo-bulb after
the package to prevent from the rain.
