This module is written to enhance your ability, Grade 4 Learners, being ready to identify the main idea,
key sentence, and supporting details as a reading comprehension strategy. The ability to identify the
main idea in text is key in reading comprehension skills. Similarly, it also helps in remembering text, to
understand the purpose of the author, and to determine the importance and meanings of the entire texts.

Identifying the Main Idea, Key Sentence and
Lesson 4 Supporting Details from the Text Listened to

The activity you dealt earlier is just an example of the main idea and supporting details. This lesson is
designed to introduce the learners to find the main idea as a reading comprehension strategy. At this point,
the ability to identify main ideas in the text is a key reading’s comprehension skill.

Likewise, as readers begin to grasp the most important information it may also be difficult for them to
identify it in each paragraph especially when reading complex text.

Furthermore, figuring out the relationships among the main idea, key sentences, and supporting details is
crucial for true reading comprehension. It is also a prerequisite skill in summarizing a text and understand
what an author is trying to say.

But then, this module shall help you so that you will better understand the purpose of the details which
further strengthens their understanding of the main ideas.

In letter A activity, it only tells what the picture is all about. That is the main idea. If we
talk about the main idea, we are referring to the topic of the picture presented. It can come
anywhere in the p paragraph, it can be at the beginning, the middle, or the end. However, the
main idea is not always directly stated.

In letter B activity, what you’ve checked describes of the picture that we are talking
about. These, we can call as details or supporting details of the topic.

Let’s read the following sentences.


1. Doctors are considered as our new heroes.

2. They are fighting against the COVID-19 virus outbreak.

3. They are brave to do their job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

4. Doctors deserve a big hand from people around them.

Write the above sentences below for us to form a paragraph.

In the paragraph above, the main idea is presented in the beginning of the paragraph. It
tells more about “the doctors.” It is the main point or topic of the writing.

Read the sentence below:

A Key sentence is the term used to identify the sentence in a paragraph that contains the
main idea. It mostly comes in the beginning of the paragraph. It is also useful in determining the
relationship between main ideas and supporting details.
After getting the main idea and key sentence of the paragraph there will be a supporting
detail that explains the topic. Let us read the sentences below.

1. They are fighting against the COVID-19 virus outbreak.

3. They are brave to do their job during the COVID-19 19 pandemic.

4. Doctors deserve a big hand from people around them.

Supporting details
Sentences above are what we call supporting details. It provides information to clarify
and explain the main idea and the key sentence of the paragraph.

Underline the key sentence in each paragraph and box the supporting details.
1. The children are very industrious and helpful. Every Sunday morning Yash, the
eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David clean their house. Alex, the second child,
cleans the yard. Iyana, the youngest child waters the plants.

2. It is a stormy day. Heavy rainfalls and blowing of strong winds felt by everyone. It
also sways the branches of trees and carries their leaves far away.

3. There are different needs for animals to survive. Animals need food to grow. They
need shelter or a place to live in. They also need special care and love.

4. Pollution is one of our big problems. The ocean becomes polluted because people
throw their garbage into it. Some factories had a greater contribution when it gives
out smoke and dust that makes the air dirty.

5. Rose is very helpful. She helps her mother in baking pastries and sells it after
classes. She also helps other members of the family that needs her assistance.

Proper waste disposal is important for the environment. It can reduce risks to
health problems. It also slows down the rate of pollution. We can help our

bags. Another is using both sides of the paper. These are an easy task to do that can help to
minimize pollution and preserve our environment.
