They include local, state, and national governments. Local governments operate in towns, cities, and counties. State governments are responsible for governing their states. And the national, or federal, government is responsible for the entire country. Local governments provide services for the people in their communities. Mostly, they take care of schools, fire departments, and police departments. State governments govern an entire state. They are based in the state capital. For example, Boston, Massachusetts, and Atlanta, Georgia, are the capitals of their states. The state government is responsible for enforcing the state's laws. The national government is based in Washington, D.C. Most importantly, the national government is responsible for keeping all Americans safe. It is in charge of national security.
