Biochemistry
MODULE OVERVIEW
Biochemistry deals with the study of chemical processes in living
organisms. It explains the complexity of life by providing knowledge on the
structure and functions of the biological molecules that include lipids,
carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, and other intercellular and
extracellular components.
This is an integral laboratory and classroom course about the study of
compounds, chemical reactions, and molecular interactions that are needed in
the production, maintenance and reproduction of living organisms. It also
includes the structure and functions of biological molecules including
carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acid, and lipids and their metabolism. It is
designed for nursing students to provide them the required knowledge to
properly understand the important processes involved in metabolic diseases,
the assimilation of nutrients, and theoretical principles of health care
techniques that are important in patient care. Activities such as problem
solving and laboratory experiments are designed to help develop analytical and
critical thinking skills and will equip you with proper and sufficient knowledge
to better understand the nature of physiological conditions. Additional videos
will be provided to further understand the concepts and other references are
also encouraged.
This module is divided into 8 chapters. For 54 hours, you will be
presented with key concepts, visual aids and activities and for the remaining
36 hours is for the laboratory activities, attached for you to accomplish. The
chapters will be divided into two chapters per week until we complete the five
weeks’ time frame. Activities will be submitted at the end of the day or at the
end of the week provided that the two chapters are complete. Pictures and
videos will be asked as part of the activities. Observe proper dress code.
Sleeveless, miniskirts and mini shorts are not allowed.
