IV. Contribution and Relevance of the Source

Kartilya is a source of moral beacon for self-transformation for the contemporary times. (Pasamonte
December 05, 2019). It can be used as guide:

To institutionalize good governance among our government officials.


To teach honor and dignity and curtail corruption among politicians.
To inculcate generosity and compassion among us.
To practice respect for women and love for our family.

Kartilya serves as a moral light for self-transformation in modern times. (Pasamonte, 5 December 2019)
It can be used as a guide to:

Instill good governance in our government employees.


To instill in us the values of honor and dignity, as well as the prevention of political corruption;
To instill in us the values of generosity and compassion; and
To exercise respect for women and love for our families

The original Katilya ng Katipunan was composed by the father of the Philippine Revolution Andress
Bonifacio and afterward, Emilio Jacinto made revisions known as Decalogue that serve as a manual of
the individuals of Katipunero. This literary works substance 13 lessons that remind us of the law of the
life and great ethics that Filipino Katipuneros ought to be taken after in arrange to fulfill our
undertakings, love, solidarity, regard, and concern for our and nation. The contribution of Katilya ng
Katipunan is equality of races, origin, educated and religion. Also, the woman and children require big
respect and care and rise to human rights that reflect our Philippine core values and standards and this
scholarly works mark as our Philippine History.

Today in this modern world, Kartilya ng Katipunan made people especially Filipinos aware that the
Katipunan was a revolutionary Philippine society in which its main purpose was to achieve
independence from Spain. This document demonstrates that there were intellectual and moral
revolutionaries fighting for the independence of the Philippines.

This document reminds us that the ordinance of their lives and good morals that the Katipuneros had
which should be executed to accomplish the affairs, love, respect and concern for our country. It has
highlighted the importance of equality of races, origin, the educated and religion.

The Kartilya ng Katipunan has helped Filipinos to understand the Katipuneros’ moral and intellectual
principles which needed to be embodied and reflected in their actions in order to join the organization.
It has also opened up a new perspective, allowing readers to grasp how this document has been
instrumental in shaping the country in present circumstances. It is also worth noting that it has helped
us in understanding the temperament of the Filipino people back then, at time of writing, as they fought
in countless movements in attempt to win back Philippine independence from Spanish colonizers.

Main arguments

His main argument was to make sure the members or the applicants had the right mindset and intention
in joining. For a true Katipunero, he had to be loyal, respectful, honorable, selfless,

Charitable, courageous, generous, diligent, love for God and patriotic. He has also mentioned in the last
tenet that it may take a lot of sacrifices for them to follow and truly implement the principles, the
sacrifices will never be in vain and will pay off in the end.

A Katipunan needs to grasp the laws, values and teachings of the brotherhood.

New members need to know that it is not easy to join the brotherhood, and they will do what is
required wholeheartedly.

Authors perspective

Emilio Jacinto’s Kartilya serves as a historical reference for how the Katipuneros lived back then. During
the Spanish period, this text contains moral lessons, conventions, and guidelines for them. For example,
the Kartilya comprises guidelines and laws that all members (especially new ones) must follow upon
joining. Jacinto stated that they should be fair regardless of your socioeconomic position or gender. He is
also opposed to women being treated unfairly in our culture. This document was able to assist the
Katipuneros in reflecting on themselves at the time. This document was an excellent resource for
learning about the Katipuneros’ way of life.
