LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Goal:

After a 40 hours duty at the surgical ward, I will be able to I will enhance my
knowledge, attitude, and skills in the care of the client with commonly occurring
acute/critical medical-surgical problems.

Learning Objectives:

After the 8 hours shift at the delivery room, I will be able to provide quality
care in the assignment, specifically:

Knowledge:

1. Learn the physical set up of the ward


2. Utilize the nursing process in a competent and caring way to meet the needs
of the client.
3. Discuss the difference between invasive and noninvasive mean of patient
monitoring
4. Assess the basic pathologic process in the body
5. Determine the patient’s priority of needs and plan care accordingly
6. Formulate nursing diagnosis for each problem which was identified from the
client’s health assessment
7. Describe the role of the nurse in the surgical ward
8. Describe the principles of source control for surgical infections
9. Identify the important determinants of health affecting clients
10. Identify the use and function of each type of surgical instrument

Skills

1.  Collect data on the patient’s health status in a systematic and objective


manner 
2. Demonstrate the role of the nurse as provider and manager of care to patients
experiencing commonly occurring medical-surgical issues.
3. Use therapeutic communication skills when interacting with patients and their
families
4. Provide pre and post op nursing care to adult patient with surgical disorders
5. Demonstrate appropriate judgement in triaging patients,
6. Demonstrate ability to obtain informed consent for emergency and elective
surgery
7. Demonstrate the appropriate methods for passing each type of instruments
8. Record medications, treatments, and subjective/objective observations
properly
9. Assist in preparing the surgical field making ensuring the sterility of the
equipment’s and tools needed.
10. Participate in care that demonstrates infection control knowledge appication

Attitude

1. Apply concepts of cultural awareness, sensitivity and respect when working


with diverse population
2. Collaborate effectively with other allied professionals to ensure best care
delivery
3. Discuss appropriate information with patients/families and the healthcare
team
4. Communicate effectively and regularly with patients and significant others to
review medical status and establish therapeutic relationships.
5. Accept responsibility for their own actions/behaviors
6. Use feedback from instructor constructively by initiating appropriate actions
7. Appropriately seek assistance when needed or required.
8. Provide care that reflects the ethical values of nursing within the professional
practice standards.
9. Assess the patient as to their learning need and knowledge deficits
10. Maintain confidentiality of written and verbal information
