Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
➢ Class list of animals that the students have seen near them
○ “Today we will be exploring animals that only live in Pennsylvania, like us!
When I see animals around me, I often think of what kind of animal it is and
where it may live. Back at home, I have lots of deer that come visit my house
because my mom puts bread and apples outside to feed them.”
○ Show a picture of my house with deer out front on powerpoint
○ “We also have many other animals that come to explore our yard! Can you see
any other animals in these pictures?”
○ “What animals have you seen around your house?”
○ “Instead of calling out we can use the“Me too” hand symbol if someone else
has seen this animal.”
○ Create a list and explore which of these are mammals, reptiles, amphibians,
fish, birds, etc.
Development/Teaching Approaches
1. Powerpoint:
a. Slide 1: Habitats in Pennsylvania
i. “As we learned, animals have different habitats that they live in that
contain all the basic needs they have to have in order to survive. In
Pennsylvania, we have habits such as rivers, lakes, forests, grasslands
and wetlands that are pictured here. Based on the animals that we have
listed on the board.. Where do you think they would live?”
ii. Match the animals in the list with some of the habitats and see where
these animals would live
b. Slide 2: Video
i. https://youtu.be/JyrbqiCokdw
ii. Introduce video: “We are going to take a look at some Pennsylvania
animals that were caught on video in a forest. These animals live in the
forest so the forest is their habitat. Take a look at the different types of
animals that you see walking across the log.”
iii. Stop video at 0:35 seconds- Ask students “What do you think the bird is
stopping for on the log?”
iv. Bring up the food chain and hunting for its prey, the fish in the water
1. “Is the fish the predator or prey? In the food chain which would
come first, the fish or the bird?”
v. After the video, prompt students: “What types of animals did you see?”
Discuss the differences in sizes and characteristics
vi. “What type of animal did you see more of? What classification?
Mammals.”
vii. “Does anyone know the Pennsylvania State Animal? “
1. “The White-Tailed Deer”
2. Who am I? Animal coloring worksheet
a. Students will be given a Pennsylvania Animal worksheet filled with outlines of
common Pennsylvania animals.
b. The teacher will choose a card and read the hints to the class. The student will
try to guess who/what animal the teacher is hinting at!
c. The student who gives the correct answer will place the paper version of the
animal on the board.
d. The students will color in the animal that the hints led to on their worksheets
e. The teacher will continue to repeat this process until all animals are shared and
colored by the students
3. Test Review:
a. “Tomorrow we will be having a test to recall all the information we learned
about animals, we will be playing a game of Kahoot to practice for it today.
The Kahoot is very similar to the test and is exactly like the one we did as our
pre-test to see what we knew!”
b. “Before we begin our game, who can tell me some of the important things we
have learned about animals this week.”
c. The teacher will hand out tiny animal erasers when a student shares something
they have learned about animals this week.
d. The teacher will allow for all the students to earn the opportunity to recall
content from the past 6 days of the animal unit and earn erasers
e. The teacher will ensure that each student is given an eraser prior to the Kahoot
to ensure fairness.
f. The teacher will begin the Kahoot Review game

ii. The teacher will stop at each question discussing the correct answer and
review knowledge on this content quickly
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
➢ “We have become experts on animals throughout this past week, but we have fully
talked about the importance of animals to us! Does anyone know why we need
animals?”
○ Animals are important to our environment. We need animals to make a healthy
living space for us to survive. Animals provide us food, clean air, pollinate
plants, and help us in many other ways. Some people even have animals as pets
and companions. Animals are important to us and we need to work to keep
them safe in their habitats and environments.”
➢ “Thank you all for being so cooperative as we finished up learning about animals and
practiced our knowledge through th review game. Tomorrow we will take a short test
on our animal knowledge and complete a very fun craft! We will be making our own
animals! As we learned, many animals are unique in their own ways so as you make
your animal you will be able to design him or her however you like!”
Accommodations/Differentiation:
➢ Follow all IEPs
➢ The teacher will assist students in recalling important content from previous lessons.
➢ The teacher will aid students in finding and coloring the correct animal on their
worksheet

Additional reflection/thoughts
The animals in Pennsylvania lesson went very well! The students loved the clues and guessing
the animal that matched them. This lesson was simple and easy to complete for the students. It
was nice to have a more relaxed lesson in the middle of this unit. The students loved watching
the video of a real camera showing the animals crossing the log. I would definitely reuse this
video in this lesson.
