18. (a) State Newton’s Laws of motion. [3 marks]
(b) By applying Newton’s laws of motion to the collision of two particles,
deduce that momentum is conserved in the collision. [3 marks]
(c) In an experiment to measure the speed of a bullet, the bullet is fired into a
piece of plasticine suspended from a rigid support by a light thread as
shown in the diagram below.
The speed of the bullet on impact with the plasticine is V. As a result of the
impact, the bullet embeds itself in the plasticine and the plasticine is displaced
vertically through a height of 24 cm. The mass of the bullet is 5.20x10-3 kg
and the mass of the plasticine is 0.38 kg.
(i) Calculate the speed of the plasticine immediately after the impact.[2 marks]
(ii) Deduce the speed V with which the bullet strikes the plasticine. [2 marks]
(iii) Calculate the heat dissipated in the impact. [2 marks]
(d) Another bullet is fired from a different gun into a large block of wood. The
block remains stationary after impact and the bullet melts completely. The
temperature rise of the block is negligible. Use the data to estimate the
minimum impact speed of the bullet. [3 marks]
19. (a) A car of mass 1000 kg is moving around a level curve of radius 50.0 m. The
coefficient of friction between the tyres and the road surface is 0.83.
(i) Calculate the maximum friction that can provide the centripetal force.

(ii) Calculate the maximum speed the car can move around the curve without
Skidding. [2 marks]
(iii) What is the path of motion if the car moves beyond this maximum speed?

(b) The road is banked so that the inner circle is lower, inclined to the horizontal
at an angle of 20o is as shown in the diagram below.

20. (a) The diagram below shows an aluminium rod 1.0 m long and 1.0 cm in
diameter with their ends connected to two blocks B and C. Blocks B and C are
maintained at 100 °C and 0 °C respectively. The side of the rod is perfectly insulated.
The system reaches equilibrium.
(i) Calculate the rate of heat flow in the rod. [3 marks]
(ii) Calculate the temperature at a point 25 cm from block C. [2 marks]
(b) If block C is instantaneously replaced by a huge block of ice, calculate the
amount of ice melt in 10 minutes. [3 marks]
(c) Half of the aluminium rod is then replaced with a brass rod of equal
dimensions,with its free end connected to block C as shown in the diagram below.
The system reaches equilibrium.
(i) Calculate the temperature at the aluminium-brass junction. [3 marks]
(ii) Calculate the rate of heat flow through the aluminium-brass junction.

(d) Calculate the length of a copper rod that has the same conducting ability as
the 1.0 m aluminium rod. [2 marks]
