A Dangerous Method (2011) Movie Segment Analysis

In his film, A Dangerous Method (2011), David Cronenberg sought to depict the ancient

historical perspective of the 'talking cure' of psychoanalysis. The introduction segment portrays

two main characters, Freud and Jung, who interact in their scientific careers. Freud views that

Jung can actively promote consistent study and research on the talking cure. Jung appears to

have enthusiasm, devotion, and energy for scientific rigor and continued study.

Jung is portrayed as a young psychiatrist who has just begun his research and clinical

work in a reputable international hospital in Switzerland. The segment also introduces Eugen

Bleuler, who is the facility's director who is renowned in the psychiatry sphere for formulating

the word schizophrenia. Jung takes time to study Freud's pieces and is specifically interested in

the element of dreams.

According to the film segment, Jung does not only read works literally but has also

started to apply the 'talking cure' approach with his clients at the facility. The segment illustrates

that Freud and Jung have consistent communications through letters and, at one instance, meets

physically at Freud's resident in Vienna, where they had an extensive conversation that lasted for

13 hours.

From the viewpoint of supervision and training, it is imperative to cogitate, the collegial,

essentially monitoring interactions between the two characters in psychotherapy and counseling.

Notably, the initiation of 'the talking cure' was not an easy process, as it mandated operating

through numerous complex issues. Jung and Freud deliberate on various facets of the ongoing

analysis. Regulations on which parties ought to take part in any given is seemingly different from

the modern ethical guidelines in Canada. Over the last century, since the historical moment that

the film is based, much has taken place in advancing the code of ethics in mental health

practices.

At some point in the segment, a female patient, Sabina Spielrein, arrives at Jung's clinic.

She is typically desperate and manic and struggles to bypass two attendants at the facility's

entrance. It takes the hand of Jung, who takes her in to assess her condition. Using Friend's

psychotherapy approach, Jung successively manages to calm her, untwist her, and ultimately

liberates her intelligent mind. By that time, Jung was yet to meet Freud and relied on his

writings.

In contemporary Canada, being a mentor, trainer, or supervisor could allow an individual

to respond to various unprofessional practices such as those conducted by Jung and Spielrein. It

is also known how highly unethical it is to analyze a family member. For instance, after Spielrein

begins improving and is noted to have a keen interest in medicine, she helps Jung out in his study

with Jung's pregnant wife being the subject. After the study, when asked to comment on Jung's'

marriage, she negatively responds.

With the evolution of the medical field, mental health experts cognize that having social

relationships with their patients could affect treatment and are guided by the principle of 'no

harm'. As mentors and supervisors in today's world, it is essential to guide our mentees or

supervisees in developing correct boundaries with their patients while also cultivating healthy

boundaries. With the formulation of CCPA's Ethical code, clear guidelines on how psychiatrists

should relate with their clients and how research in such matters should be done has been put in

place.

It is seen from the segment that these unhealthy relationships with clients could pose

adverse effects on an individual's profession and any advancements after that. That is well

depicted in the struggle that Freud and Jung find themselves in that break their relationship.

Additionally, The segment brings out the picture of an inner struggle whereby, as seen in the case

of Jung, it is possible to help others deal with their mental problems while having a struggle

with self-control.

As Sabina recovers and blossoms, she falls in love with Jung, and the two start an affair

even though Jung has a wife called Emma. Later as she attends her clinical sessions with Freud,

she confesses that they were having an affair with Jung. Freud uses that piece of information in

the diagnosis and compares it to a weapon in his ideological struggle with Jung. In that regard,

the film emphasizes that psychoanalysis can tamper with the scuffle between Freud and Jung.

Besides, Sabina may have made some much more convenient conclusions compared to the two

battling male approaches.

The film segment depicts the initially touchy relationship between two psychiatrists,

Freud and Junk, which eventually fall apart over a sexually hysterical patient called Sabina. In

the field of psychotherapy, the relationship between the three could be said to form a triangle.

That presents a case where a foreign party tries to attract some personal attention from an

internal party.

As a result, one of the internal parties could give in to the need for the external party. In

doing so, the involved internal party may tend to be more attached to the foreign party, at the

expense of the other remaining party. That results in some adverse effects as the neglected party

tries to win the attachment back. For instance, in the movie, Jung begins to disagree with Freud

on the appropriately meaning of Libido and whether sexual development and sexuality start at

neuroses. As noted earlier-above, the ideological differences are instigated by Sabina's revelation

about her romantic affair with Jung. Various love triangles depicted in this segment may include

that between Freud, Jung, and Sabina, as well as that one formed by Sabina, Jung, and Emma.

In conclusion, the paper has portrayed an in-depth analysis of the introduction segment of

David Cronenberg's film, A Dangerous Method (2011). The analysis has been performed in terms

of an allegory of Canadian identity and has successively managed to portray the prevailing love

triangle between the film's main characters, Freud, Jung and Sabina. It also illustrated the

reactions that various parties within a love triangle tries to pose, to get attachment from either of

the other two parties.
