Fig.2 Installation of temporary Casing

Boring and excavation for a pile will not be commenced until 24 hours after completion of any pile within a radius of 6m,
center to center. The verticality of the bored hole will be guaranteed by sprit level and will not be more than 1/100. The final
depth will be measured by steel tape or by plumb-bob. Drilled sludge will accumulate into slurry tank. Then the excavated
soil and drilled sludge will be loaded into dump truck using excavator and transport to dispose into designated area. The
Plumb-bob is to be placed after full cleaning of the bore hole. During drilling of bore hole, an experienced piling engineer will
carry out the works.
4.1.5 1ST BOTTOM CLEANING

After completion of the drilling an interval 15 minute is required to allow the fine materials to settle then Drilling chisel required
to set 300mm above the pile toe level to wash out the sediment slime by flushing with slurry. Flashing of bore hole shall be
continued with the circulation of slurry until all course materials comes out from the bottom of the hole. Consequently,
sediment slime will be removed to the ground and bottom elevation will be rechecked to confirm sufficient removal. The time
between final excavation and bottom cleaning and the start of the concreting will be kept as short as possible and shall not
exceed 4 hours. To achieve this, the final 2 meters of excavation will not start until all preparation for cleaning, reinforcing
and concreting are finished.
4.1.6 FABRICATION OF REBAR CAGE

Rebar cage will be fabricated and transported into building and water tank site from fabrication yard. Each piece of the rebar
cage shall be fabricated and assembled according to the approved drawings basically prior to commencing drilling work.
The hoop bar is fixed by steel wire or welding according to the approval by the Engineer. After completion of fabrication for
one segment of rebar cage, it shall be carefully kept in the dry and stable condition of stockyard which is elevated at least
20 cm higher than the ground level. Wooden beam or equivalent material will be used for stocking the assembled rebar
cage.

Condition of re-bar cage will be checked and cleaned constantly. If some soil or rust find remain on the re-bar cage, it will
be removed before installation of re-bar cage.
4.1.7 VERTICALITY OF BORE HOLE

The verticality of bore will be checked before lowering the steel casing by spirit level by inverted plumb- bob to ensure that
inclination not more than 1/100 and if found more than 1/100 than it should rectify to bring it within tolerance.
4.1.8 INSTALLATION OF REBAR CAGE

The length of the rebar cage is variable for all the buildings. The full length will achieve by lapping method to facilitate
installation and transportation and also to avoid bending, twisting of the rebar cage. Rebar case have to be lower in the bore
hole without bending the cage. The main bar and spiral will be fixed by alternate spot welding and by GI (18 SWG) wire
binding. The vertical rebar lapping will be fixed with U-bolt splicing method. U-bolt will be used for splicing of rebar cage.
Cages and additional hoop reinforcement bars will be fastened by steel wire. Working drawing of rebar fabrication will be
prepared and submit for the Engineer’s approval. U-bolt details are attached as appendix-3.

Fig.4: Rebar Cage Installation

A circle shape 150mm diameter and 25mm thick concrete spacer produced by same concrete as of bored pile will be
provided as cover of rebar cages, following the approved working drawings. This spacer will be fabricated at site by manual
mixing with 10% more cement content and fine, coarse aggregate will be the same which will be used in bored pile concrete
production. The spacer will be fixed in position by steel wire and interval will be shown in working drawing.
4.1.9 SETTING OF TREMIE PIPE

Tremie shall be inspected before installation. The length of each pipe, water tightness at the joint, cleanliness inside the
pipes will be checked to avoid any troubles such as segregation of concrete due to ingress of water into the pipe cause
insufficient water tightness at the joints. The pipe pieces will be connected together from bottom with checking the length of
each pipe and water tightness at the joint and finally the top adjusting piece will be installed to connect it to concrete hopper
at top of the casing pipe. Tremie pipe will be minimum 200mm diameter; both pipe and hopper will be water tight.

Table-5: Concrete Specification

Concrete placing work will be scheduled for early morning or late afternoon as much as possible to minimize the effects of
rapid drying conditions that may cause plastic shrinkage cracking.
Prior to commencement of the concrete casting, it will execute the following checking for prevention of blocking Tremie pipe.

 Workability of concrete
 Selection of the suitable Tremie pipe (diameter, length per pipe and joint)

DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 15 of 63

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

 Check of leakage of pipe joints

A sliding plug or rubber sponge ball will be placed within the tremie tube to prevent direct contact between the first charge
of concrete and the water or bentonite. Tremie pipe position from bottom shall not be more than 500 mm.
On first pouring, a 0.4m³ volume bucket filled with concrete will be set on the hopper and tremie pipe will immerse 1.5m with
concrete Thus, a large volume of concrete will be poured into the borehole at one time. The purpose is to remove the
sediments at the bottom, which is remaining after cleaning. See Fig 7: below

Fig.7: Replacement of Sediment through Concrete Pouring

Upcoming slurry/water from bottom of bore hole on the time of pouring concrete will be discharged into water tank by water
pump. Then the slurry/water will be checked for density and judged whether to be reused or not. And as there is the possibility
that rebar cage will be up-lift by concrete, monitoring for elevation of rebar cage will be executed during concrete casting.
Since the top of concrete is contaminated by mixing with stabilization liquid, extra volume of concrete is to be used for
confirmation of the clean concrete. The height of extra or surplus concrete is proposed to be 1000mm from cut-off level;
however, this may be adjusted by instruction by the Engineer in consideration of site condition.
It is required to check the elevation of casting concrete in the bored hole by steel tapes and plumbs to control elevation of
the tremie pipe bottom suitably and to detect immediately any collapsing or narrowing of bored holes. The inspection sheet
and calculation of concrete volume will be compared to the diameter of the bore pile to determine the remaining volume of
concrete to be poured.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

4.1.12 REMOVAL OF TEMPORARY CASING

Temporary casing will be extracted while the concrete within them remains sufficiently workable to ensure that the concrete
is not lifted. When the casing is being extracted a sufficient quantity of concrete will be maintained within it to ensure that
pressure from external water, drilling fluid or soil is exceeded and that the pile is neither reduced in section nor contaminated.
The temporary casing will be kept a minimum of 2 meters under the outlet of tremie. No concrete will be place once
temporary casing has been lifted above the top of the concrete; it will be placed continuously as the casing is extracted until
the desired head of concrete is obtained. The pile will be concreted to a over height of 1000mm above the pile cut off level
shown in the approved drawing to allow for chiseling off the top concrete down to sound hard concrete. The pile top wills,
after clean cutting, be embedded 100mm above the bottom level of the pile cap as shown the drawings.
4.1.13 BACK FILLING

After 1 hour to 2 hour of removal temporary casing bore hole will be filled by sand or soil.
4.2 COUNTER MEASURES

Countermeasures for difficulties encountered during bored pile works are stated as follows;
Incidents of cave-ins or Borehole collapse

1. Continuously water head elevation shall be checked.

2. In case wall collapse is found out, the collapse soil will be cleaned by washing. If the collapse can be stopped, wall
and bottom condition are to be checked and judged whether recoverable or not. In the case of unrecoverable, the
Contractor will be instructed by the Engineer.
Encountering existing utilities

1. Before commencement work, existing utility will be surveyed and removed. After finishing removal, relevant authorities
will be confirmed.
2. If unforeseen non-use utility obstructs, it must be removed before casing installation work. Excavation will be executed
to remove obstruction.
Incidents during concrete placement and counter measure

1. Prior to casting concrete all preparation shall be completed and checked by engineer, access
road, equipment, concrete mixer, and material volume shall be checked to avoid concrete supply interruption.
2. In case tremie pipe is blocked, Spare pipe shall be use instead. Generally spare pipe shall be prepared previously.
3. In case rebar cage rise with concrete, stop casting concrete and move tremie pipe to make
separate of rebar cage and concrete. Additionally, shock or vibrate head of re-bar cage with taking care not to
harm cage.
4. Concrete Interruption, to avoid concrete interruption two mixer machine will be prepared for every concreting
schedule, one will be used for concreting, and one will be reserved for back-up.
5. Collapse Solution, a long steel pipe will be used for temporary casing based geo-technical
Investigation report to avoid collapsed on the upper part of the hole.
6. In case tremie pipe is blocked, pile will be rejected and the pile shall be replaced as instructed by the
Engineer and as per specification.

Specifications and in conformity with the requirements of the Drawings or other parts of the Contract Documents.
The pile boring shall be carried out using a temporary steel casing bored to the pile toe or to a level approved by the
Engineer. The temporary casing shall be withdrawn.

DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 22 of 63

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

Under any circumstances, if permanent steel casing is required as per site condition the CCECC-MAX JV will provide
minimum 10 mm thickness or as approved by the Engineer.

Under certain circumstances, the CCECC-MAX JV may be permitted to bore all or part of the pile without casing under
water or use drilling fluid to stabilize the borehole.

9.1 SPECIFICATIONS OF MATERIALS

9.1.1 CONCRETE

The concrete shall conform the Clause D6 of these Specification (Concrete Class 35). Concrete placed under water or
drilling mud by tremie shall have a cement content of not less than 430kg/m3.
The density and consistency of the concrete shall conform to the tremie casting method and the maintenance of sufficient
workability (slump) of all the concrete during the casting and casing handling period, including reasonably calculated delays,
shall be secured by a design mix, subject for approval by the Engineer.

All relevant concrete properties such as slump, time of setting, temperature and strength shall be measured in trial mixes.

9.1.2 REINFORCEMENT

The reinforcement shall conform to the clause D7 of Specifications.

9.1.3 DRILLING FLUID

The CCECC-MAX JV shall comply with the following clauses if bentonite mud is used to stabilize the boreholes:

Before concreting a pile, the CCECC-MAX JV shall take measures to remove any heavily contaminated bentonite
suspension which could impair the free flow of concrete from the tremie pipe. A sample of the bentonite suspension shall
be taken from the base of the boring using an approved sampling device and if the specific gravity of the suspension exceeds
1.25, placing of concrete shall not proceed and the CCECC-MAX JV shall modify or replace the bentonite as approved by

Control tests for density shall be carried out daily on the support fluid using suitable apparatus. The measuring device shall
be calibrated to read within 0.01 g/ml.

Mixing

Bentonite 5-6.5% and any other material shall be mixed thoroughly before 24 hours of boring with clean water to make a
suspension which shall maintain the stability of the pile excavation for the period necessary to place concrete and complete
construction.

Where saline or chemically contaminated groundwater occurs, special precautions shall be taken to modify the bentonite in
fresh water so as to render it suitable in all respects for the construction of piles. Subject for surveillance by the Engineer.

9.2 QUALITY TEST OF DRILLING FLUID

9.2.1 SLURRY TESTING:

Sampling Bentonite Slurry:

Apparatus: Slurry Sampler, or equal, approximately 76mm inside diameter and 305-356 long.

DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 23 of 63

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

Procedure:
 Hold the right Cylinder with one hand.
 With the other hand, let the bottom of the sampler slowly descend until it reaches the bottom of the hole
containing bentonite slurry.
 While holding the rope above cylinder, let the right circular cylinder drop into slurry slowly.
 After the right cylinder reaches the bottom, pull up the sampler slowly.
 Place the contents of the sampler in a container of approximately 1-2gal.(3.8-7.6L)

I) Measuring the Density of Drilling Slurries:

SCOPE: This part determines the density used in slurry construction techniques, such as those for barriers to control
horizontal movements of liquids.
Apparatus:
 Mud Balance, Hydrometer or any instrument of sufficient accuracy to permit measurement within±0.01g/cc;
however, the mud balance is the instrument generally used.
 The mud balance consists of a mud cup attached to one end of a beam, which is balanced on the other end by a
fixed counterweight and a rider free to move along a graduated scale.
 A level bubble is mounted on the beam.
 Attachments for extending the range oh the balance may be used.

ii) Calibration of Mud Balance or Hydrometer

The mud balance or Hydrometer shall be calibrated annually; calibration of mud balance can be checked by;

 Filling up the cup with water:

 Placing the lid in the cup, allowing excess water to overflow; and
 Placing the rider on the specific gravity mark equal to 1.00 at which time the balance shall level.

iii) Procedure:

 Set up the instrument base approximately level.

 Fill the clean, dry cup with slurry to be tested. Place the cap on the cup and rotate until firmly seated. Make sure
some of the slurry is expelled through the hole in the cap to free trapped air or gas.
 Wash or wipe the excess slurry from the outside of the cup.
 Place the bottom on the support and balance it by moving the rider along the graduated scale. The beam is
horizontal when the leveling bubble is on the center line.
 Read the density at the side of rider toward the knife-edge. Make appropriate corrections when a range extender
is used.
iv) Calculations:

Convert the Density to other units using the following relationships:

 Specific Gravity=Read directly off balance.

 Specific Gravity(p) in lb/ft³(kg/m³) = (specific gravity(p) in g/cc) (1000) (62.4)
 Specific Gravity(p) in lb/gal(kg/L) = (specific gravity(p) in g/cc) (70) (8.35)

Table-11: Specification of Marsh Funnel

iii) Procedure

Cover the funnel orifice with a finger, and pour freshly sampled drilling fluid through the screen into the clean, upright funnel.
Fill until fluid reaches the bottom of the screen. Remove finger and start stopwatch. Measure the time for the mud to fill to
the 1 qt. (946 cm³) mark on the cup. Report the time to nearest second as Marsh funnel viscosity.

 Marsh funnel

The Marsh funnel viscometer is a simple device for measuring viscosity from the time it takes a Known volume of liquid to
flow from the base of a cone through a short tube. It is particularly used by mud engineers to check the quality of drilling
mud.
A modern plastic Marsh Funnel

 Description and Use

It consists of a cone 6 inches (152 mm) across and 12 inches in height (305 mm) to the apex of which is fixed a tube 2
inches (50.8 mm) long and 3/16 inch (4.76 mm) internal diameter. A mesh is fixed near the top across half the cone.
In use, it is held vertically and end of the tube closed with a finger. The liquid to be measured is poured through the mesh.
(This removes any particles which might block the tube.) This ends when the mesh is reached, which gives a volume inside
of about 1.5 liters. To take the measurement, the finger is released as a stopcock is started, and the liquid is allowed to run
into a measuring container. The time is seconds is recorded as measure of the viscosity.
In American practice (and most of the oil industry) the volume collected is a quart. If water is used, the time should be 26+/-
0.5 seconds. [1] If the time is less than this the tube is probably enlarged by erosion, if more it may be blocked or damaged,
and the funnel should be replaced, In some companies, and Europe in particular, the volume collected is a litre, for which
the which the water funnel time should be 28 seconds. Marsh himself collected 0.50 litre, for which the time was 18.5
seconds.[2]
The Marsh funnel time is often referred to as the Marsh funnel viscosity, and represented by the abbreviation MF. The unit
(seconds) is often omitted. Formally, the volume should also be stated. The (quart) Marsh funnel time for typical drilling
muds is 34 to 50 seconds, though mud mixtures to cope with some geological conditions may have a time of 100 or more
second.[3]
While the most common use is for drilling muds, which are non-Newtonian fluids, the Marsh funnel is not a rheometer,
because it only provides one measurement under one flow condition. However the effective viscosity can be determined
from following simple formula.[4]
DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 25 of 63
METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

μ=p (t-25)

where μ= effective viscosity in centipoise

ρ= density in g/cm³

t= quart funnel time in seconds

For example, a mud of funnel time 40 seconds and density 1.1 g/cm³ has an effective viscosity of about 16.5 сP. For the
range of times of typical muds above, the shear rate4 in the Marsh funnel is about 2000-s.[4]
The term Marsh cone is sometimes used, particularly within the concrete industry, but also in the oil industry, sometimes it
means the Marsh funnel, sometimes a similar device with the same cone aspect ratio, but a different tube. European
standard EN445[5] for measuring the flow properties of cement grout mixtures specifics a funnel similar to that described
above but fitted with a tube of 10 mm internal diameter and of length 60 mm, which is often referred to as a Marsh cone.
Some manufacturers supply devices which they call Mar4sh cones, with removable tubes with size ranges from 5 to 15 mm.
These can be used for quality control by selecting a tube which gives a convenient time, say 30 to 60 seconds.
Other cones of different geometries and with different orifice arrangements are in use in specialist areas, but with the same
general operating principle. They are generally called flow cones. Thus a Marsh cone is a flow cone with an aspect ratio of
2:1 and a working volume of at least a litre. A Marsh funnel is a Marsh cone with a particular orifice and a working volume
of 1.5 liters.
iv) Tests

The frequency of testing drilling fluid and the method and procedure of sampling shall be proposed by the CCECC-MAX JV
and approved by the Engineer prior to the commencement of the work. The control tests shall cover the determination of
density, viscosity, gel strength and pH values.

9.3.4 BORING NEAR RECENTLY CAST PILES

Piles shall not be bored so close to other piles which have recently been cast and which contain workable or unset concrete
so that a flow of concrete could be induced from or damage caused to any of the piles. Boring and excavation for a pile shall
not be commenced until 24 hours after completion of any pile within a radius of 6 meters, center to center.

DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 26 of 63

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

9.3.5 TEMPORARY CASINGS

Temporary casing of approved thickness, length and quality or an approved alternative method shall be used to maintain
the stability of pile excavations, which might otherwise collapse.
Temporary casings shall be free from significant distortion. They shall be of uniform cross-section throughout each
continuous length. During concreting they shall be free from internal projections and encrusted concrete which might prevent
the proper formation of piles.

9.3.6 PUMPING FROM BOREHOLES

Pumping from a borehole shall not be permitted unless a casing has been placed into a stable stratum which prevents the
flow of water from other strata in significant quantities into the boring, and unless it can be shown that pumping will not have
a detrimental effect on the surrounding soil or property.
9.3.7 BORING RECORDS

During the boring of the pile, the CCECC-MAX JV shall compile a 'boring log' indicating depths and types of the various soil
layers encountered. Disturbed samples shall be submitted to the Engineer as requested

The CCECC-MAX JV shall allow for carrying out sampling and tests to check soil strengths as required by the Engineer.

9.3.8 PLACING REINFORCEMENT

The reinforcement shall be placed as indicated on the Drawings. Reinforcement in the form of a cage shall be assembled
with additional support, such as spreader forks and lacings, necessary to form a rigid cage. Hoops, links or helical
reinforcement shall fit closely around the main longitudinal bars and be bound to them by approved wire, the ends of which
shall be turned into the interior of the pile or pour. Reinforcement shall be placed and maintained in position.
Joints in longitudinal steel bars shall be permitted unless otherwise specified. Joints in reinforcement shall be such that the
full strength of the bar is effective across the joint and shall be made so that there is no relative displacement of the
reinforcement during the construction of the pile.
Joints in longitudinal bars in piles with tension (for instance for test loading) shall not be carried out by welding but by splicing
or coupler.

If the final pile toe level instructed by the Engineer is deeper than that indicated on the Drawings, the section of the pile
deeper than the toe level indicated on the Drawings is required to be reinforced, unless otherwise instructed by the Engineer.
9.3.9 PLACING CONCRETE

i) Approval

No concreting shall take place before the bottom of the excavation has been cleaned, the borehole inspected and
approval obtained in writing from the Engineer.

The method for placing concrete shall be approved and conform to the following:

 The method of placing and the workability of the concrete shall be such that a continuous monolithic concrete
shaft of the full cross section is formed.

 The concrete shall be placed continuously, and without such interruption as would allow the previously placed
batch to have hardened. In this respect the CCECC-MAX JV shall submit details of his contingency plans,
standby plant, etc. to be utilized in the event of an equipment failure.

DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 27 of 63

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

 The use of pumped concrete and the methods in its use shall have to be approved by the Engineer.

 The CCECC-MAX JV shall take all precautions in the design of the mix and placing of the concrete to avoid
arching of the concrete in a casing. No spoil, liquid or other foreign matter shall be allowed to contaminate the
concrete.

ii) Requirements of Consistency

The optimum consistency of various type of structures shall be in accordance with below table;

SL# Type Slump (mm) at the time

of placing of concrete
Structure with exposed inclined surface requiring low
25
1 slump concrete to allow proper compaction

2 40-50
solid columns, piers, abutments, footings, well staining
RCC structure with fair degree of congestion of
reinforcement, e.g. pier and abutment caps, box culverts,
3 50-75
well curb, well cap, walls with thickness greater than 300
mm
RCC and PSC structure with highly congested
4 reinforcements e.g. deck slab girders, box girders, walls 75-125
with thickness less than 300 mm
Underwater concreting through tremie e.g. bottom plug,
5 150-200
cast in situ piling

Table-12: Consistency requirements

iii) Placing Concrete under Water or Drilling Fluid

Concrete to be placed under water or drilling fluid shall be placed by tremie and shall not be discharged freely into the water
or drilling fluid.
Before placing concrete, the CCECC-MAX JV shall ensure that there is no accumulation of silt, other material, or heavily
contaminated bentonite suspension at the base of the boring, which could impair the free flow of concrete from the pipe of
the tremie. A sample of the bentonite suspension shall be taken from the base of the boring using an approved sampling
device. If the specific gravity of the suspension exceeds 1.25, the placing of concrete shall not proceed. In this event the
CCECC-MAX JV shall modify the mud quality.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

11.2 BASELINE SURVEY

Baseline data on environment shall be collected to assess the region's existing physical and environmental characteristics.
Information and data presented in this chapter are based on primary surveys and secondary data. The information on the
baseline environmental conditions forms the basis to analyze the probable impacts of the proposed development activities
vis-à-vis the present environmental quality of the study area. The area of canal relocation has been surveyed on air quality,
ground water quality, noise quality, surface water quality of the river/canal and ecological feature were measured.
11.3 PHYSIO-CHEMICAL ENVIRONMENT

11.3.1 AIR QUALITY

Ambient air quality measurements are essential to provide a description of the existing conditions, to provide a baseline
against which changes shall be measured and to assist in the determination of potential impacts of the proposed area of
canal relocation.
During field survey, no particular problem with air quality could be noticed. The apparently good air quality is attributed to
the fact that there are no large industrial installations near the work site that could serve as a major source of air pollutants.
The locations were selected on the basis of power availability of the equipment and areas which represents baseline
condition.
11.3.2 NOISE POLLUTION

Noise-monitoring of stations shall be selected to undertake noise monitoring to characterize existing noise environment
around the proposed project site. Noise level readings and any unusual local noise sources were recorded. Measurements
shall be taken instantly on-site using Noise level meters (LUTRON SL-4010) during the day (6am-9pm).
11.4 WATER RESOURCE

11.4.1 SURFACE WATER QUALITY

There are number of rivers crosses in between Dohazari to Cox’s Bazar double tracking way. The water quality of this river
shall be tested to assess the baseline condition. Based on the baseline data affect by change during construction period
shall assessed and mitigation measures shall be taken according to approved EMP.
11.4.2 GROUND WATER POTENTIAL AND QUALITY

Reasonably good quality and quantity of ground water is available in and around the project site. Manually operated hand
pumps and power-driven tube wells extract groundwater from a depth of approximately 200 to 250 feet. A study of the
ground water potential shall be carried out for the hydro-geological assessment.
The concentration levels of pH, Alkalinity, Mn. As, Fe, Ammonia Nitrate, total hardness, Chloride, Fecal Coliform and total
Coliform for tube well shall be measured and shall be compared with the acceptable limit set by the DOE, GOB for
ascertaining the pot-ability of ground.
11.5 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND ITS EVALUATION

11.5.1 WATER LOSS AND SOIL EROSION:

In the course of the railway construction, water loss and soil erosion may occur after the damage to and disturbance with
the native ground vegetation and the soil. The areas in which soil erosion may occur include sections with deep-excavation
and high-filling, borrow pit, spoil site, temporary construction site, sections with special geology and other sections interfering
with the ground soil layer. The soil erosion may occur due to the failure of the complete recovery of the vegetation in the
first 1~2 years’ operation.

DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 36 of 63

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

11.5.2 NOISE:

The noise occurring in the construction period is mainly caused by the construction machinery, the result of the prediction
using the attenuation mode of noise synergistic effect shows the noise at the area with a distance greater than 60m away
from the construction site by day and 120m away from the construction site by night can reach the national standard.
Therefore, the noise will exert obvious effect on the residents with a distance less than 60m from the construction site by
day and with a distance less than 120m from the construction site by night.
11.5.3 SURFACE WATER:

The construction of the river/canal-crossing bridge may influence the quality of the surface water. The influences mainly
include the leakage of oil and its entry into water, suspension of the bed mud and the loss of the discarded construction
waste or building materials caused by the underwater works for bridge construction, and the construction mud at the
construction site and the domestic wastewater at the camp. The pollution will influence downstream of the bridge site or of
the construction yard near river, and the pollution may last in the construction period and after the completion of the
construction.
11.5.4 AIR:

The major air pollution in the construction period is the construction dust, and the dust mainly comes from the uncompleted
sub-grade, the stock yard and the transportation road. Many factors may result in dust, including climatic conditions and the
type of construction activities, the dust formation are principally depend on the wind direction, wind speed, and air humidity.
The impacted area can reach a distance of 150~200m from the construction site and both sides of the road.
11.6 POSSIBLE MITIGATION MEASURE

11.6.1 ECOLOGICAL PREVENTION MEASURES DURING CONSTRUCTION

In order to reduce the damage on ecological environment along the line, comprehensive measures combining works, plant
with land reclamation measure etc. shall be adopted during construction. Meanwhile, strengthening management
of construction and assurance of project quality etc. can mitigate the damage on ecological environment and make the
ecological environment at local section be better for the purpose of economic development and ecological protection, with
detailed mitigation measures as following:
11.6.2 RECLAMATION OF LAND TEMPORARILY-USED

At those sections where farmland is occupied for temporary land use by the Project, measure of reclamation shall be actively
adopted to accelerate secondary ploughing. The detailed measures are:
when using farmland, stripping for piling or collecting for storage of 30~40cm bellow earth layer on surface soil, after
construction, it shall be cleared in time and loosened and covered for tillage; on the condition that it is impossible to
reclamation or financing is not enough, e.g., the borrow pit or dumped earth with great depth Shall be degraded for use
such as for afforestation or other land use.
Temporary land used for earth borrowing and dumping shall be reclaimed and cultivated, which can, to a certain extent,
compensate for the impact on farmland occupied as temporary land use for earth borrowing or dumping field etc. For
temporary land use of hills and mountains, try to transplant tall and big trees as much as possible and strip and pile the
mellow earth on surface layer for reservation, finally restore it to be woodland, which is beneficial to the recovery of woodland
resources and improvement of woodland environment along the railway line.
11.6.3 CONDITIONS OF SOIL BORROWING FILED AND SLAG DUMPING FIELD

During construction, materials shall be procured from vendors and earth shall be borrowed from mound, hilly land,
wasteland, dry land or other works, avoiding taking farmland as earth borrowing field; in addition, the status of earth in all

DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 37 of 63

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

earth borrowing fields shall be investigated to confirm the depth of earth borrowing for the purpose of reserving proper
superficial clay to prevent soil deterioration and make it be reserved resource for recycling.
Dump area will be located at waste land or field with low production where is low in terrain and not easily affected by river
and stream water washing.

 After dump area is completely filled the field will be levelled with side slope 1:1.5.
 Slope protection shall be provided through grass planting or masonry stone protection or re-
cultivation.
 Cut off drain gutter will be built at the upstream of dump area and drain ditch constructed at
downhill accordingly.
 The surface water flow will be discharged through these ditches so as to prevent spoils from
erosion. All the drainage system will be connected to natural water system and thus avoid
erosion to the ambient environment.
 After substantial completion of earthwork, the dump areas shall be treated level and re-
cultivation carried out to suitable areas. It is suggested to use spoils as filling material. If the
dump area is not determined the spoils shall be well handled to far place.
 During next design stage, the design institute shall further carry out and select the dump area
by combining with the practical situation and comments of local government, and try to reuse
spoils as local construction filling material. If a suitable dump area is founded and agreed by
the Employer, the construction unit shall hand over to local environmental bureau or water
conservancy bureau for approval, and consult with local government.
11.6.4 STRENGTHENING PUBLICITY AND EDUCATION OF ECOLOGICAL PROTECTION

 Establishing measures of encouragement and punishment to inspire the Contractor and

constructors to consciously participate in the ecological protection.
 Before commencement, set boards for publicity of ecological environment protection on
construction site and surroundings and publicize and educate the Contractor on environmental
protection and biological variety protection; after entrance of constructors, for whom education
on ecological protection shall be made.
 The contents publicized include the general knowledge of science and relevant regulations on
biological variety and simple method of identification and protection for local wild animals and
plants for key protect
11.6.5 MANAGEMENT MEASURES SUCH AS CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION

Suitable management measures can get twice the result with half the effort on ecological protection during construction,
while the measure of construction supervision is the best one for management during construction.
During the construction period, full-time staff for environmental protection from Supervision Department and Construction
Department of the Project will temporarily carry on ecological supervision, in the manner of inspection and supervision, and
check the implementation of ecological protection measures and behaviors of ecological protection by constructors.
11.6.6 MEASURES FOR NOISE PREVENTION AND CONTROL DURING CONSTRUCTION

Combining with the actual condition of this Project, the following measures and suggestions on the impact of noise on
environment during construction:

 As stipulated in Noise Limitation on Construction Site, reasonably arrange the construction

time and try not to carry out construction at night or arrange the construction activities with low
noise.

DCRP/CMJV/MS-009, REV.B Page 38 of 63

METHOD STATEMENT FOR PILES CONSTRUCTION (STATIONS & BUILDINGS)

 The construction of machines such as pile hammer with high sound level must be stopped at
night from 18:00pm to 7:00am.
 Try to carry on construction activities with high noise during the holiday of schools as much as
possible, and
 Adopt temporary protection measures such as erection of wooden sound insulation plates etc.
 If continuous construction is necessary due to special requirement, it must be approved by
relevant department in advance and communication with residents shall be carried on.
 Those machines with high noise level such as generator, air compressor etc. shall be put at
remote positions far away from sensitive spots of sound environment such as the residential
areas and schools,
 If it is difficult to choose reasonable position, measure of covering for noise insulation shall be
adopted and the machines shall be maintained on periodic basis and the operating rules shall
be strictly implemented.
11.6.7 MEASURES FOR VIBRATION PREVENTION AND CONTROL DURING CONSTRUCTION

During construction, control and management of construction machinery with strong vibration shall be strengthened, when
foundation construction is carried out near large sensitive spots, it is forbidden to carry out explosion and monitoring of
nearby buildings shall be made.
11.6.8 MEASURES FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT DURING CONSTRUCTION

 The construction sites of railway line sections are generally set at local villages which is near
to the construction sites and has convenient traffic and ample power supply and water supply,
and where wastewater from kitchen and bathroom Shall be drained through existing drainage
facilities;
 If on those construction sites there are no drainage facilities, combined with local actual
situation, terrain condition and direction of drainage, simple self-built septic tanks shall be
used for treatment of domestic wastewater and before draining into local trenches.
 The pollution impact of wastewater used for flushing machines and vehicles for construction
shall be controlled, as per the distribution of construction sites, fixed places for washing
constructional machines and vehicles are set for convenience of drainage of wastewater.
 It is suggested that during construction, spots for washing and maintenance of constructional
machines and vehicles shall be set as per the division of constructional bidding sections made
by construction unit, in principle, the sections where major project is located shall be chosen to
ensure the drainage of wastewater for flushing at certain position.
 The machines and vehicles entering the construction site shall be inspected and repaired,
avoiding “Trickling and leakage”.
 Construction plant and vehicles shall be repaired on periodic basis on periodic basis at certain
positions where the oily wastewater shall be drained after being separated into oil and water
through oil collecting tank and integrally de-toxication treatment shall be carried on for
recovered floating oil.
