Block and a Geological report was drawn up in November’1972. Based on the
report, Kedla Underground was approved in June’1975 for production of
medium coking coal. Production starts in 3 October 2009.
Kedla Underground Project is situated in the heart of Damodar valley, mainly
along the north of the river. This coalfield lies in the lower gondwana period
which is the sub period of Permian period.

ACCESSIBILITY:
The colliery is well connected to Ranchi by road and the distance of the mine from
charhi is 20km. Road passes along the Eastern boundary of the area.

CLIMATE:
The climate of the place is “typical monsoon” type. The lowest temperature is in
december and highest in June. The maximum precipitation is during the month of july
and august.
GEOLOGY OF MINE

The main mineral of Kedla Underground Project is Coal and Country rock are Shale
and Sandstone. Type ofCoal is Coking coal(Bituminous coal) and the gradeness of
Cokingcoal is Washery-II. There is one seams existing in kedla lease hold area named
as 5A seam. There are no any major geological disturbances like fault or fold in this
mine. Average thickness of 5A seam is 4.6mThickness of 5A seam increase in the
east and decrease trend of the west of the property, but yet there is no any major fault
or fold are in encountered within the lease hold area. The gradient of the seam is 1 in
8.4m.

METHOD OF WORKING

In Kedla Underground Project, Bord and Pillar method is adopted for the extraction
of coal. In this method there are two steps for the extraction of coal i.e. Development
and Depillaring. Narrow roadways are driven in series which are parallel to each
other and right angle where they connect, this is known as Development and narrow
roads are separated by coal blocks. And these roadways are supported by coal pillars
and then after these pillars extracted which is known as Depillaring.

 Status/Result of Development
▪Dimension of Pillar - 28m X 28m
▪Width of gallery - 4.2m

SUPPORT SYSTEM

A man-made structure erected in mines to prevent caveins and heaving of the surrounding rock, to
preserve the required dimensions of the mine cross section and to absorb and control the rock
pressure. Mine support must provide mine safety and be economical, portable, and simple to
maintain, neither interfering with nor complicating the conduct of production processes.

Roof support is essential to the safety of every underground mine. It has three primary functions:

 To prevent major collapse of the mine roof.

 To protect the miners from small rock falls that can occur from the immediate roof skin.
 To control deformation so that mine openings remain serviceable for both access and escape,
as well as for ventilation of the mine workings.
