Course Description
This course is an introduction to statistical and probabilistic methods and theory applicable to situations faced by
managers. Topics include: data presentation and summarization, regression analysis, fundamental probability
theory and random variables, introductory decision analysis, estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing,
and regression analysis. The aim of the course is for the students to develop skills on problem formulation,
identification of statistical techniques, computer implementation in Excel, and interpretation of results.

Students Learning Outcomes

Students will develop skills on problem formulation, identification of appropriate statistical techniques, computer
implementations in Excel and manual calculations and written explanations, and interpretation of empirical results.
At the end of this course will be able to:
1. Organize and summarize raw data
2. Build and evaluate a regression model from raw data
3. Apply the basic rules of Probability Theory
4. Apply the concept of a random variable to solve business problems
5. Apply the Normal, Poisson, and Binomial Distributions to solve business problems
6. Identify significant changes in averages and proportions
7. Determine if two populations have the same mean or the same proportion
8. Determine if several populations have the same mean

Course Materials
Textbook: Statistics for Management and Economics (11th Edition) by Keller.
You may purchase the textbook from UTD bookstore, Cengage publisher or Amazon.

Software: Microsoft Office Excel

This course uses a laptop, eLearning, Internet access, Microsoft Excel 2007 or higher (no trial versions), with Data
Analysis Activated (this comes with Excel).

Technical Requirements
In addition to a confident level of computer and Internet literacy, certain minimum technical requirements must be
met to enable a successful learning experience. Please review the important technical requirements on the Getting
Started with eLearning webpage.

Course Access and Navigation

1. eLearning: This course can be accessed using your UT Dallas NetID account on the eLearning website.

UT Dallas provides eLearning technical support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The eLearning Support
Center includes a toll-free telephone number for immediate assistance (1-866-588-3192), email request
service, and an online chat service.
2. Microsoft Teams: Recorded lectures for asynchronous access will be uploaded into the class team in MS
Teams.
Teams => Select this course => Files => Recordings
3. Discussion Board: Questions that are not personal should be posted to the course Discussion Board on
eLearning. The instructor and TA will receive these questions and comments, as well as other class
members. Questions of a personal nature (or not relevant to others in the class) should be sent directly to
the instructor and not posted to the Discussion Board.
Students are encouraged to respond to questions from fellow students. Answering questions helps both the
student asking the question and the student working on the answer. In addition, since the conversation is
open to the entire class, others can also learn from the exchange. To subscribe to the discussion board:
Log into e-Leaning => Course List => Select the course => from the left Menu, select Discussion Board
=> Click “Questions/Comments” forum => Subscribe

Course Policy: Be Advised

1. It is your responsibility to read the syllabus and check the eLearning for announcements/changes daily.

Otherwise, you are expected to watch the posted videos every week, take notes, and read the appropriate
textbook sections if needed.
6. You must pay close attention to all the due dates from the first day of class and schedule your personal
activities around those dates. Never purchase a plane ticket (no matter how cheap it is) before the posted
final “Exam Week” (review UTD calendar for specific dates).

Exams
• All three Exams are online and will be held via eLearning system.
• The tests will be administered by the Testing Center (UTD Synergy Park). Students should visit
https://ets.utdallas.edu/testing-center for more info. Be advised that student ID (Comet card) is required for
taking exams. The details will be announced through eLearning prior to each exam. Students are strongly
encouraged to register a seat early in advance preferably during the first 2 weeks of semester. Students
MUST reserve a seat for taking the test at least 4 days prior to exam: http://registerblast.com/utdallas/exam
• There will be NO make-up/rescheduling exam except for medical emergencies (written statement
justifying the situation from a physician required). Written statement should include the physician’s (not a
physician assistant) address and phone number for the verification purpose. Scheduling a surgery/operation
on an exam date is not considered a medical emergency!
• Tests results will NOT be available for the students. However, you have one week, after grades are posted
on eLearning, to set an appointment with your TA and check your test.
Quizzes
• There are three quizzes before each test. All the quizzes are online and will be held via eLearning system.
• There will be no make-up (no justifications) for a missed quiz under any circumstances. This is a policy
with no exception, so PLEASE do not ask to reschedule a quiz/for a make-up quiz. I will not violate the
course policy.
• Quiz results will be available for the students. However, you have one week, after grades are posted on
eLearning, to set an appointment with your TA and check your answers.
• No late submissions will be accepted, no matter what. Don’t wait until the last minute!
• General questions regarding quizzes must be posted on the course Discussion Board.

Important Note: If any adjustments to final grades are necessary, they will be determined based on the performance
of the class. Unless there is an error in grading the final exam, letter grades are FINAL. Extra credit will NOT be
offered for any graded portions of this course.

Comet Creed
This creed was voted on by the UT Dallas student body in 2014. It is a standard that Comets choose to live by and
encourage others to do the same:
