1. PURPOSE
This technical specification defines the details about carbon steel/austenitic steel/Ni alloys vessels, pipes and tanks and
exchangers chemical treatment by circulation system using Suez Ferroquest FQ product solutions (or equivalent).
2. GENERAL RECOMMENDED PRECAUTIONS
The producers instructions of the solutions and their thresholds must be followed (reference to material safety data sheet).
Personal safety measures and the laws about use, storage and disposal of chemical substances must be followed.
3. HANDLING
Carried out using exclusively Teflon or nylon bands.
4. MATERIALS
Carbon steel alloys, CrMo steel, austenitic stainless steel and Ni alloys.
5. DEFINITIONS
Passivation is the process where a very thin film of rust is purposely formed and phosphates are placed on freshly
cleaned carbon steel to prevent excessive rust. Instead of the carbon steel being left in the active state (prone to
corrosion), the metal is left passive (non-reactive). The intent is to protect the freshly cleaned metal while the equipment is
out of service.
Passivation Chemicals used: FQ7101/:F07102 (or equivalent):
Organic passivating agent liquids. FQ7101/FQ7102 work by chelating any soluble iron (like the surface rust present in
the new exchanger) in the system and promoting a Phosphate/Iron conversion layer on the metal surface. This layer
is then in the optimum form to prevent 'iron throw’ to the Cooling Water.
Ratios of chemicals to use for Cleaning/Passivation
For pre-cleaning on new equipment, the below concentrations on the chemicals are suggested:
• FQ7101 5% by volume (cleaner)
• FQ7102 0.2% by volume (pH corrector)
The recirculating solution pH shall be between 6.0 and 7.2 (Optimal value is 6.5).
If it’s not possible to calculate the actual thickness of the deposit to remove, use a standard 10% FQ7101 solution with
1%-2% of pH corrector FQ7102.
To ensure a performing chemical cleaning on the internal surfaces of the exchangers, and to reduce the product
replenishment (also considering the variable volumes caused by pipes, pumps and recirculation tank) it is suggested to
use a 15% FQ7101 solution.
6. PREPARATION OF THE CLEANING SOLUTION
• Calculate amounts of Ferroquest 7101/7102 (or equivalent) to be used (Table 1).
• Fill the circulation tank and the equipment to be treated with Quality 2 Water – Tap Water (Table 2)
• Add chemicals to the circulation tank while circulating water. Turn material over one time for mixing before
proceeding.

7. CHEMICAL INLET PREPARATION
• Limit and tag all the working area around the exchanger and temporary equipment area.
• Prepare pumping station equipment for service. If using a diaphragm pump, start a small air flow.
• Hook up connection hoses from acid supply container to injection pump and to manifold off discharge of pump
and open vent on storage container.
• As equipment has been installed properly, start chemical injection.
8. CHEMICAL PARAMETERS MONITORING
PH, conductivity, and Iron content every 60 minutes shall be monitored in order to target the desired concentration of
Ferroquest chemicals.
Additional Ferroquest FQ7102 (or equivalent) will be added to control pH; all results shall be logged as certification.
9. CHECK OF IRON CONTENT
Take a sample of return water for iron as Fe 2O3.
The iron levels will increase rapidly when the cleaning is first started since the easiest iron deposits will be removed.
After a period of time, the iron level will not increase at the same rate, indicating that the passivation step is almost
complete.
10. FQ7102 ADDITION FOR PH CONTROL
Sample return water for pH on an hourly basis to target a pH range of 6.0 to 7.2 (optimal value is 6.5)
If needed, add Ferroquest 7102 (low pH) to maintain target.
11. PASSIVATION STEP COMPLETE
Passivation phase is complete when the iron concentration does not significantly increase over time, even after
additional FQ7101/7102 has been added to the system or if all the Ferroquest chemicals have been added to the
recirculation tank and have been in circulation for 24 hours, then passivation can be considered complete.
In any case recirculation time can be performed from 24h – to 72h.
After BAMA and Resta Site Supervisor agree that passivation step is complete, proceed to drain exchanger.

12. DRAIN THE ITEM
• Shut down circulation pump.
• Open high point bleed.
• Drain exchanger to empty storage tank(s).
13. FINAL FLUSH OF THE ITEM
Connect water (Quality 2 - Tap Water) to inlet connection and fill the system with fresh water until flow back to tank is
observed.
Drain the item to empty storage tank(s) or sewage.
14. DRYING
After chemical treatment the surfaces shall be drained completely.
Drying can be performed using forced dry air, air treatment unit (UTA), vacuum pump, nitrogen flushing.
Drying shall be completed when dew point at the outlet is 0° or less.
15. PRESERVATION WITH N2
Conditioning by nitrogen purging according to the preservation procedure No. WQA0107-2918 REV.2
