Ethics Assignment 1

An ethical dilemma occurs when an individual faces a decision-making situation where all the options available would require violating some ethical standards or principles. For example, an employee may have to choose between reporting a case of workplace harassment or keeping quiet to avoid negatively impacting a coworker, presenting conflicting duties. There is no obviously right solution in such cases. Some ways to deal with ethical dilemmas include discussing the situation with others, understanding one's duties and obligations, and choosing the option that maximizes good outcomes and minimizes bad ones.

Assignment 1

Answer this question in Argumentative Essay format.

1. What is an ethical dilemma? When does a dilemma take place? Cite a

situation that will explain several courses of action to be considered in solving
a problem. Don't forget to include the references where you have taken the
ideas to back up your argument. (20 pints)

Ethics are the moral standards and principles by which (entities/individual and
organizations) govern their behaviors and decision making. When these standards
and principles conflict with each other in a decision-making situation, an ethical
dilemma may occur.

An ethical dilemma takes place in a decision-making context where any of the

available options requires the agent to violate or compromise on their ethical
standards.

Employees make decisions that affect the success and profitability of

enterprises on a regular basis, resulting in ethical challenges.
When determining whether to report a workplace harassment incident or
declare a conflict of interest, employees may face an ethical problem. In the first
situation, the employee may see that the harassment is unjustified, but he or she may
feel bad for putting their coworker in jeopardy. In the latter situation, the employee
may be aware of their responsibilities to the company, but they may also have a
strong sense of loyalty to their family and friends, making it difficult to act in the
best interests of the company.

There isn't always an obvious solution to an ethical challenge that is ethically

acceptable. The following are some tips for dealing with the most difficult ethical
dilemmas:

• Discuss it with others - The greatest method to find out if a problem exists is
to discuss it with others. The existence of a dilemma, as well as the moral
consequences of each choice, can be determined through a group study of the
scenario. This could entail calling your company's hotline and reporting the
occurrence so that you can speak with the compliance team and obtain the
help you need.
• Understanding the Agent's Duties and Obligations - Understanding the agent's
responsibilities in the scenario is a fantastic way to approach any ethical
difficulties. A fiduciary obligation to the organization legally obligates the
agent to behave in the best interests of shareholders in a business context.
When it comes to resolving an ethical dilemma, contractual duties might also
play a role.
• Maximize the Good and Minimize the Bad - When there is no perfect answer
to an issue, the best way is to look at the effects of each possible action and
choose the one that has the most positive and least negative consequences.
