Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory proposes that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. The theory identifies five levels of needs: physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Maslow suggested that people are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some needs take precedence over others. Once a need is satisfied, it no longer motivates, and the next need in the hierarchy motivates. The theory is widely used in business for employee motivation and personal development.
