ACTIVITY: TIMELINE
DISCUSSION
1. Schumpeter defines innovation as a process of “creative destruction”. What
does it mean, really?
Creative destruction means the decay of long-standing practices, procedures,
products or services followed by more innovative, disruptive ones. It is based on the
principle that old assumptions need to be broken so that new innovations can benefit
from existing resources and energy. Creative destruction is most often used to describe
disruptive technologies such as the railroads or, in our own time, the internet. The trend
line is toward progress, growth, and higher standards of living overall.
2. In what period of human evolution did the earliest period of entrepreneurs
appear? Explain how it laid the foundation of rising economic inequality in
the world.
It was in the stone/paleolithic age where entrepreneurship began. During the
stone/paleolithic age, early humans developed hunting tools which is about 5 million to
10,000 B.C. In this period, hunting and gathering was their main source of living, and
tribes would often barter several goods such as foods, weapons, and spices since there
is still no money. Following that period is the agricultural revolution. In this period the
people started planting and domesticating animals as source of food and livelihood.
Also, during this period, the population grew and was split into two classes: peasants
and rulers. It is in this period where inequality started. The peasants worked the land
while rulers controlled all the wealth earned from farming. Inequality continued until the
industrial revolution. During the industrial period, technological progress was made, to
have a great impact to people but most of them have fears regarding the
unemployment and income inequality. In the information age (1950 up to the future),
information communication technology (ICT) developed rapidly or at an instant. This ICT
affects and, in the future, will affect the distribution of income as well as the
unemployment rate, peace, security and other issues. At that time, inequality will still be
rampant since computer softwares and other deliverables will still be expensive and not
affordable to the masses, since the prices of commodities and goods other than
technology-related products will continue to increase.
3. How will the development of more advanced computer software affect our
economy? Is technology bound to provide employment? Is It possible for
computers and technology to truly replace humanity?
Technology is the key driver of economic growth of various countries as it allows
for efficient production of goods and services. Also, this helps in acquiring information
vital in today’s world. With the aid of technology, the lives of the people are a lot better
as it was before. Technology continuously creates opportunity and jobs to people,
especially now that we’re in a pandemic situation. It also makes several works easier
through the use of gadgets and different softwares that enables the worker to work
efficiently. Jobs such as online selling, vlogging, managers, courier services, office
workers, and others are somewhat dependent to technology nowadays. This just means
that with the world gearing up towards the use of technology, we, the people must
continuously develop our skills. With the rapid advancements brought up by the
technology, the possibility of it to replace humanity is very high. It’s quite scary to think
about it but it is really possible.
4. The potential application of technology to warfare are well known. But is this
application positive or negative?
One might argue that the military application of science is undoubtedly negative in
that it has led to the creation of the atomic bomb and other weapons of mass
destruction. Technology has made the complete destruction of humanity possible. That
capacity continues to grow and is now evident, as more countries develop nuclear
technology and the creation of nuclear warheads continues. On the other hand, it is also
possible to argue that science has made it possible for the more accurate destruction of
enemy targets and, in doing so, has lessened unintended damage to civilian populations.
Smart bombs and cruise missiles have lessened the human component of war at least to
some degree. Applying technology can provide additional power to the ally such as
boost in their moral and confidence. It is or can be advantageous if the people
developing such equipment are careful enough to not damage the lives of the people
and their environment as well. The advantage and disadvantage of this will also depend
on its use and purpose but overall, this will be advantageous.
5. What will the effect of future technology be? Will it lessen the amount of
destruction and death? Or will it be our ultimate undoing?
With the advancements of technology, our lives are now easier, better, and more
fun. Since we can talk to our relatives through various social media applications.
Technology can be both advantageous and detrimental to our society. This will depend
on how we use and manage it. If we use it for a negative purpose then it will cause
problems not only to ourselves but on our environment as well. The future of technology
is very bright and is beneficial to all of us. With the use of technology, we can easily
access information, develop and invent machines, equipment, and software that is
essential in our lives. It is really important to use technology properly because if not
then it will be detrimental to us and our society. Technology in itself can neither be
advantageous and detrimental to our society, it is us, the people that makes it
advantageous and detrimental to our society. This will all depend on our ultimate doing.
