5 Hardware Installation
Installation Position
l If the device directly uses the power supply from the switch supporting PoE, the access
point (AP) should be installed in a position where the Ethernet cable can reach, that is, less
than 100 m away from the switch.

If the switch does not support PoE, the total distance from the Ethernet switch to the PoE
module and from the PoE module to the AP should be less than 100 m and as short as
possible.

l If the device is located in a lightning non-protection zone (LPZOA), for example, on the
top of a building, make it protected in LPZOB by using a lightning protection system to
enable the device. The lightning protection system is generally composed of a lighting rod,
grounding down leads, and grounding system.

If the device is located in a lightning protection zone (LPZOB), for example, at the side of a
building, it is exposed to less lightning strokes. In an area with more than 40 thunderstorm
days per year, ensure that a lightning protection system is available. In a area with less
than 40 thunderstorm days, the lightning protection system is unnecessary.

The installation place should be far away from the main down leads of the building. Ensure
that the device is within the 45° protection cone of the lightning rod. Avoid directly installing
the device on the lighting rod. Ensure that the device is reliably grounded.

The diagrams of LPZOA and LPZOB are shown in the following figures.

5
l The installation site should be far away from transformers, voltage substation, high-voltage
power cables, and large-current equipment. Ensure that there is no AC transformer within
20 m, no high-voltage transmission cable within 50 m, no unprofessional radio station within
200 m, and no radio broadcast transmitter within 1000 m. Also, avoid installing multiple
APs back to back in a short distance.

l The power supply in the installation site is free from high-power equipment. If such equip-
ment exists, install a voltage stabilizer.

l To avoid being hit by vehicles, install the device far and at least 1.5 m away from the road.
A protective guard is a must if the distance from the device to the road is shorter than 1.5
m.

l The installation site should be at least 1000 m away from pollution sources such as chem-
ical plant and saline.

l The support or pole on which the device is installed can bear 7-magnitude earthquake.

l Ensure that the operation of the device does not affect residents’ daily lives.
Appearance and Interfaces
W615The following figure shows the product appearance.
6
Power Connection

7
l If the switch does not support PoE, use the standard PoE module to provide 48 V Ethernet
remote power supply. The PoE power module should be placed indoors together with its
adapter. See the following figure.

The lightning protection level of the upstream cables that provide power for the power adap-
tor:
à If the cables are totally laid indoors or under the ground, the lightning protection method
is unnecessary.
à If longer than 3 m cables are laid outdoors, the lightning protection requirement at the
ingress should be at least: In=5 KA (nominal) Im=10 KA (maximum).
à If longer than 10 m cables are laid outdoors, the lightning protection requirement at
the ingress should be at least: In=10 KA (nominal) Im=20 KA (maximum).
à If longer than 10 m cables are laid outdoors and the environment is harsh (for example,
strong-thunder area or overhead wiring), the lightning protection requirement at the
ingress should be at least: In=20 KA (nominal) Im=40 KA (maximum).
l If the switch supports standard PoE and provides power for the device, see the following
figure for the power supply relation:

8
Installation Procedures
Outdoor APs are installed on poles, which are not provided by ZTE. Purchase one if required.
The pole diameter should be 50 mm to 110 mm. Perform the following steps:
1. Take major installation parts from the packing case. See the following figure.

l Part 1 is used to install a fixed W615 on the pole.

l Part 2 is used to fix the W615 host.

2. Put the W615 on part 2 and align the screw holes.

9
3. Tighten the screws until the W615 and part 2 are fixed tightly. See the following figure.

W615The following figure shows the back view of the after being fixed with part 2.

4. Take out part 1 and corresponding 4 long screws. See the following figure.

10
5. Tighten the long screws to secure the W615 on the pole.
Note:
For waterproofing requirements, main interfaces should face downwards.

The following figure shows a completely installed W615.

11
6. Take out the lightning arrester (optional), and connect it to W615 antenna feeder interface.
See the following figure.

The lightning arrester is used to protect the W615 against lightning/surge and discharge
thunder current.

Note:
There are two types of lightning arrestors: 2.4 G and 5 G.
7. Use a yellow-green ground cable with a cross-sectional area of 6 mm2 to connect the
grounding end of the lightning arrester to the grounding end of the device. See the fol-
lowing figure.

8. Use a yellow-green grounding cable with a cross-sectional area of 16 mm2 to connect the
grounding end on the W615 side to the grounding point.

For requirement on the grounding, antenna, and lightning protection standards, refer to the
following table.

12
Table 1 Grounding and Lightning Protection Standards

Item Requirement

Grounding impedance l The grounding impedance should be less than

5 Ω. In areas with less than 20 thunderstorm
days per year, the grounding impedance of the
BTS can be less than 10 Ω.

l For the angel steel stoke into the ground, the

grounding impedance can be less than 10 Ω.

l In areas with high soil resistivity, apply salty

water or resistivity reducing agent to the soil
around the ground post to reduce the soil resi
stivity.

l The upper end of the grounding body should

be at least 0.7 m from the ground. In cold
regions, the grounding body should be buried
under the tundra.

Device protection grounding l Use the yellow-green grounding cable delive

red with the equipment to connect the ground
ing terminal to the grounding bar.

l When making grounding cables at site, ensure

that the cross-sectional area of the grounding
cable is at least 6 mm2 and the length is no
longer than 3 m.

l If no grounding bar is available in the actual

situation, directly strike an angle steel or steel
pipe into the ground.

l Made of galvanized material, the angel steel

size should be at least 50mm×50mm×5mm
and the pipe thickness should be at least 3.5
mm.

l The yellow-green grounding cable and the

angle steel should be welded. Anti-corrosion
measures should be taken on the welding
joints.

l The grounding cable must have a cross-secti

onal area of at least 6 mm2 and should be as
short as possible. During engineering constru
ction, the cable cannot be coiled.

13
Item Requirement

l The grounding terminals of all lightning protec

tors on the devices at local and remote ends
are reliably grounded.

Earth lead l The earth lead is a metal conductor connect

ing the grounding net and the grounding bar.
All grounding cables of the device should be
connected to the grounding bar.

l The earth lead should be no longer than 30 m.

It should be made of galvanized flat steel with
a cross-sectional area of 40 mm × 4 mm or 50
mm × 5 mm.

l The grounding bar and each lead should be

connected by a yellow-green grounding cable
with a cross-sectional area of 35 mm2 or weld
ed. Anti-corrosion measures should be taken
on the welding joints.

Power grounding l Use power cables with PE ends instead of

those with only live and neutral wires.

l The neutral wire of the power cable cannot

be connected to the protective grounding of
any communication device. The live wire and
neutral wire must not be reversely connected.

Lightning arrestor l In the plain area, the protective angle of the

lightning arrestor should be less than 45°.

l In the mountains and areas where thunders

occur frequently, the protective angle of the
lightning arrestor should be less than 30°.

l The grounding of lightning protection instrum

ents such as lightning arrestor should use the
same grounding body as the protective groun
ding of the equipment room.

14
Item Requirement

Antenna l The antenna support is prepared in accorda

nce with the design.

l The AP device is installed and grounded in

accordance with the design.

Network cable When the device is installed outdoors, better use

shielding network cables. Ensure that the devices
connected by the cables are reliably grounded.

9. Take out the feeder cable (the recommended is the 1.2 m-long feeder with two type-N con-
nectors, which is delivered with the equipment). See the following figure:

10. Align the feeder connector with the antenna connector and tighten them by using a wrench.
11. Connect the other end of the feeder to the connector of the lightning arrester. See the
following figure.

15
Note:
When leading the feeder and network cable along the pole, keep a 20 cm long
vertical wiring. Reserve certain bending radius. Coil a long feeder to an S or
8 shape instead of a ring.
Do not bend the feeder; otherwise, signal transmission is affected.
12. Take out the base and sealing nut for the waterproof connector. Wrap insulation tape around
one end of the network cable so that the network cable can be tightly connected with the
waterproof connector. See the following figure.

13. Lead the end that is wrapped with insulation tape through the sealing nut and base of the
waterproof connector in sequence. See the following figure.

14. Install a shielding crystal head on the network cable led out from the waterproof connector.
See the following figure. The wires in the crystal head correspond to the white-orange,
orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, and brown wires in the network
cable in sequence.

16
15. Insert the network cable to the corresponding interface of the W615 and tighten the water-
proof connector. See the following figure.

Note:
Do not lay the network cable along the anti-lightning strip or aerially cabled.
Use white corrugated protection tube or steel tube to protect the outdoor cables.
Devices connected by the network cable should be as close as possible. For
long-distance wiring, lay the cables at least 0.7 m under the ground. The network
cable should be wired far away, more than 10 cm, from the AC power cable and
feeder.
16. Perform 1+3+3 waterproof handling for the network cable connector and feeder connector
(at the lightning arrester end and antenna end).
Note:
Before performing waterproof handling, clean the dust or stains on the connector.
The 1+3+3 waterproof method is as follows:
Wrap the connector with one layer of electric insulation adhesive tape first,
then three layers of waterproof insulation adhesive tape (staining the tape till
the width is reduced by 1/4-1/2), and then three layers of electric insulation
adhesive tape.

Connection
a Computer Wireless

1. Install and set a wireless NIC for the computer.

2. After the installation and settings, the wireless NIC searches for available Wireless Local
Area Networks (WLANs) automatically.
3. After the search is successful, the computer can access a WLAN.
4. If an encryption key has been configured for accessing WLANs of the W615, you need to
enter the key when the computer accesses an WLAN.

10 Troubleshooting
The solutions for the common problems during the installation and operation of W615 are pro-
vided in this section. For any unresolved problems, contact the service provider for help.
Problem Solution
The MAC address of MAC address is the unique identifier of a network device. This

l Check the MAC address of this device on the little label at the
bottom of each device.

l Log in to the Web management page of the device to view

authentication and connection. Therefore, if an STA cannot
connect to an AP, the probable reasons are as follows:

l The channel supported by an STA is different from that of an

AP. If the AP uses the channel that the STA cannot support,
the STA cannot find the AP. In this case, change the channel
of the AP.

l The authentication and encryption mode used by the STA

are different from that of the AP. If their authentication and
encryption modes are inconsistent, the STA cannot pass the
authentication so that the connection cannot be established.

there are other interference sources around this device,
for example, microwaves and other 2.4 GHz high-power
devices. These devices will affect normal operation of the
device. Try to turn off other devices if possible and check
whether the problem has been solved.

l There is the compatibility problem between an STA and an

AP. The STA may not comply with the 802.11 protocol speci
fication. As a result, the STA cannot connect to an AP.

l Wireless interference: Check whether there is a wireless

device around the device. If there is a wireless device, turn
off the device and then check whether the problem has been
solved. Shield the device generating interference or change
its location.

l View the signal strength. Check the signal strength between

an STA and an AP. If the signal strength is quite low, the
antenna is not connected reliably, or the output power is quite
low due to the ageing problem.

l Check an NIC. The power of the NIC may be quite low. Make
the NIC close to an AP to test its bandwidth.
