Rizal practiced medicine as an ophthalmic surgeon in Hong Kong from 1891 to 1892. During this time, he successfully operated on his mother's eye. He also conceived of a project to establish a Filipino colony in Borneo but faced some opposition. Additionally, Rizal contributed articles to a local newspaper and wrote several works discussing the rights of man and the situation in Calamba. In mid-1892, Rizal decided to return to Manila to establish the Liga Filipina political organization, but walked into a trap laid by the Spanish authorities who arrested him upon his return.

He informed the governor general of his coming of Manila


and place himself under the protection of the Spanish goverment
Rizal and his sister Lucia widow of Herbosa left Hong Kong for Manila

Immediately after Rizal's departure from Hong Kong


The spanish consul general who issued the goverment guarantee of
safety sent a cablegram to Gov. Despujol that the victim "is in the
trap"

The deceitful Despujol ordered his secretary, Luis de Torre to find


out if Rizal was naturalized as a German citizen as was rumored

Meanwhile Rizal and his sister were peacefully crossing the China Sea
