#2. From 0 to first 200 clients by Noah Kagan

Many of us have wasted time and money on businesses that eventually fail.

Back in 2010, when Noah Kagan started his own business, he almost made the same mistake.
But his friend forced him to validate his idea.

That validation resulted in his first 200 paying customers.


This is a story about AppSumo. Now it’s a thriving business with almost a Million email subscribers.

So how did it happen:

1. As a frequent Redditor, he noticed people were using the imgur app very often and that there was an
imgur Pro account.
1.2. So he figured he could sell imgur Pro at a special price to Redditors.

2. He sent an email to the founder of imgur to ask if he’d do a promo at a heavily discounted price with Noah. He
said "SURE!"
2.2. So he had a product to sell but no customers or site.

3. To get the customers, he cold emailed one of the founders of Reddit and invited him to breakfast. He agreed!
3.2. Noah asked if Reddit would provide some free ad space since he was promoting something valuable to
Redditors. He generously agreed.

4. Noah created a landing page and connected it to PayPal.

5. The reddit ads went live.

6. He got 200 sales and manually sent the buyers a code to redeem their imgur Pro account.

#3. From 0 to 1.5M users (Zapier study)

In 2012 Zapier had 0 users.


Now they have 1.5 million users.
And grow 50% year over year.

Usually, getting your first users is the hardest part.


Here's how Wade Foster - founder of Zapier did it.

1. He visited user forums of Evernote, Salesforce, Dropbox…


And was looking for posts asking for integrations.
Something like:
“I love Evernote, it would be great if it worked nicely with Dropbox”...

2. He just commented in those forums and said:


“hey, here’s how you can do it…
here are the API docs to these two services, and if you know how to code, here’s how you can make it work.
OR,
I’m working on a project that will make an integration for this and if you want to find out more, go to this link and
let me know.”

3. Those forum links converted into 5-10 users from each one.
+ Forum staff at big companies started asking him for partnerships.

4. Wade made people pay a one-time fee ($1-$100) to get into the beta...
Purpose - to gather only people who really thought this was important enough to pay for it.

Before Product/Market Fit:


1. When creating websites for clients, they noticed - they were creating the same items over and over again.

3. Featured the UI on Designer News and ProductHunt. Result: 2K-3K users/week.
4. Created paid premium version of the UI with more elements, pages, etc. Result: $200/week

After Product/Market Fit:

#5. From 0 to 100,000 users (growth plan)

Here are the first growth steps that allowed Crazy Egg to gain their first 100,000 users:

1. They created a simple opt-in page with a screenshot of a beta of their product.

2. Their ideal customers were web-designers, so they invested $10K into ads on various CSS galleries.
Result: 20,000 emails gained from their simple opt-in page.

3. Once they launched the product, they notified the email subscribers.

4. They submitted their CSS design to CSS galleries.


Result: 23,294 new visitors for free.

5. They offered all the big and small tech blogs a free $99 Crazy Egg account and helped them to set it up.
Result: TechCrunch, Mashable and a ton of other more and less popular tech news blogs covered Crazy Egg.

6. By attending hosting conferences, they offered partnerships to hosting companies: a free Crazy Egg
account for every new user + 30% commission when they upgrade to the paid plan.

7. By networking at SEO events, they offered a free $99 Crazy Egg account to SEO agencies (if they like it,
they will recommend it to their customers for free).
Result: over 4,000 signups.

8. They were speaking at conferences. But instead of getting a speaking fee + traveling expenses, they kindly
asked them to make Crazy Egg a sponsor of their event. It costs nothing for the organizers. They agreed.

9. They noticed that people love sharing their heatmaps so they made the process as easy as possible.
Result: referral traffic increased.

10. They analyzed the most popular search keywords on Google around their topic and created SEO pages for
those keywords.

Cumulative result: 100,000 users.

#6. From 0 to $1B in 6 years in a crowded market

to? Please reply to this email. And now let‘s get back to today‘s growth hack.

Would you like to enter a crowded market, packed with competitors like Cisco, Microsoft, Adobe, Citrix, Polycom,
etc.?

This is exactly what a guy from China, Eric S. Yuan, decided to do back in 2011 when he founded his company
Zoom.
In just 6 years he grew his company to $1B.

How did he do it?

1. Eric S. Yuan is originally from China. In the mid-’90’s, he decided to apply for a U.S. visa but was rejected.
He continued to apply again and again over the course of 2 years and finally received his visa on the 9th try.

2. He arrived in Silicon Valley in 1997 and joined WebEx, a real-time collaboration company with 10 employees.

3. It took him 10 years to steadily become a VP of Engineering, managing 800 engineers worldwide.

4. In 2007, Webex was acquired by Cisco for $3.2 billion, and Eric went on to become Cisco’s VP of Engineering.

5. In 2011, Eric left the company because the new management didn‘t support innovation, the product became
outdated, and customers unhappy.
So Eric decided to create his own customer-oriented video communication tool that actually works "and doesn’t
make you want to pull your hair out".
Around 40 engineers from Cisco joined him. And together they started building Zoom.

6. From 2011 to 2013, they focused on building a product with the best experience in the market.
During the first limited access launch in 2012, Eric personally emailed every customer who canceled their
service, discovering their reasons.

7. In 2013, they launched the product publicly and focused their marketing on these things:
7.1. The product itself is viral (you need to invite somebody to have a video conference), so the #1 goal is to
make you happy with the quality.
7.2. Freemium (free unlimited 1-on-1 calls, free conference calls up to 40 minutes).
7.3. They removed all the friction: made the ability to join the call without signing up, without installing software,
in 3 seconds, just by clicking a link. That boosted virality even more.
7.4. Offered the service to educational institutions globally. 1,400 joined.
7.5. This is huge! They established partnerships with software providers:
7.5.1. Added a video component to Redbooth.
7.5.2. Created a program named "Works with Zoom", which established partnerships with Logitech, Vaddio,
InFocus and other hardware and software vendors.
7.5.3. Zoom managed to have its software integrated into InterviewStream, a company that provides remote
video interviewing capacity for employers.
7.6. The media started to test the new service and write awesome reviews, spreading the word out even more.

Results:
+ In 2013, 3 million people participated in a Zoom meeting.
+ Now they have over 400 million people using their service.
+ Company now employs ~1300 people.
+ They raised some venture funding and achieved a $1B valuation.

#7. From 0 to $100 million in 37 days

In January 2013, Gentry Underwood launched an email app called Mailbox.

37 days later Dropbox acquired it for a reported $100 million.

How?

1. They focused on solving one massive problem - tons of unread messages in email inboxes.

2. They created a smart and simple solution.

3. They created an automated “referral reservation scheme”:

3.1. You sign up to get notified when the app will become available to you.

3.2. You see how many people are in front of you in the queue.

3.3. The system notifies you: the more friends you invite, the higher you'll be in the queue, the faster you'll get
access to the app.

3.4. You invite your friends, and they invite their friends, ... etc.

4. They created a simple video ( https://vimeo.com/groups/159435/videos/54553882 ) that went viral (because


the problem was hot/unsolved and the solution was elegant).

5. They notified tech media, who were more than happy to write about the app (because the problem was
hot/unsolved and the solution was elegant).

6. The virality of the video met media coverage, got multiplied by the “referral reservation scheme” and in 37 days
resulted in 538,000 users waiting in a line to get access to the app.

7. Dropbox acquired the company for $100 million.

#8. From 0 to $5M/year (Buffer study)

Buffer was founded in 2010. Now it generates ~$5 million a year.

How did they manage to achieve this number?


Here are their growth steps:

1. In November 2010, the first version of the Buffer (the tweet scheduling app) was released by students in one of
the college rooms of the United Kingdom. Joel Gascoigne wrote code, while Leo Widrich was responsible for
marketing.

2. They pitched to the top/medium/small tech blogs, but nobody wanted to write about them.

3. So they decided to create their own blog. In the first 9 months, Leo wrote around 350 articles!

4. Leo returned to reaching out to other blogs, but this time he asked if their audience would be interested in
similar articles. After 10 months this strategy resulted into over 100,000 users for Buffer.

5. In July 2011, the team moved from the U.K. to Silicon Valley.

6. Then there was the San Franciscan startup incubator AngelPad.

7. Half a year later, after being refused by 88% of investors, they were able to raise $400,000.

8. In 2012, due to visa issues, they moved to Tel Aviv, Israel.

10. In addition to Twitter, they also integrated Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+ within their tool.

11. As a result, their articles turned away from Twitter alone to social media marketing in general. Their average
shares per article quadrupled.

12. By September 2013, Buffer gained 1 million users, with around 16,000 paying users.

13. To get more backlinks Buffer created a widget for blogs.


Result: ~3000 blogs embedded their widget.
Result #2: Google blocked them for unnatural backlinks :).
After they NoIndexed that link by Robots.txt, Buffer was restored by Google.

14. They used a new link building mentality – Create relevant & engaging content so good that people get your
site linked. Now they post almost daily.

#9. From Startup Weekend to $300M in 5 years

The hardest service to start is a marketplace.


No matter how cool your tech is, your marketplace makes no sense without 2 types of audiences: sellers and
buyers.
You need to somehow get them and grow simultaneously.

Today I’ll tell you how Rover.com - a marketplace for pet sitters and dog walkers - managed to grow into a $300
million company in 5 years.

1. In June 2011, a developer, Philip Kimmey, suggested the concept for Rover in the Seattle Startup Weekend
contest. And became the winner.

2. Greg Gottesman a managing director at a VC firm, who attended the contest, shared the idea with Aaron
Easterly, a dog lover, and a 15-year tech veteran with a focus on online marketplaces. Aaron became CEO and
Greg became a board member.

3. They chose a simple business model - 15% fee per transaction (later risen to 20%).

4. Getting the first people into the marketplace was all about asking friends and family.

5. Then they started to attend Seattle dog parks and dog events.

6. The next thing they did was work on existing dog communities (offline and online on various social networks).

7. From the very beginning they set a high bar for sitters. They only approve 20% of applicants.

8. They first began connecting sitters in Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, then expanded to all 50
states in 2012.

9. Then they discovered that many people started going to their sitters and asking for other services for their pets.
9.2. Based on that finding, they decided to expand to all kinds of pet services: sitting, grooming, daycare
services, etc.

Results:
Top sitters now pull in $2,000-$5,000 per month.
10,000 new members join every week.
90% of hosts who have ever received a booking are still bookable on the site.
95% of sitters receive a 5-star rating.
90% of their users have recommended the service to others.
2700% year-over-year growth in the business.

In 2002, 2 guys from Ukraine - Alex Shevchenko and Max Lytvyn created a paid plagiarism-checking software
called MyDropbox.
They were selling their solution from day 1 to universities to help them solve their specific, narrow, academic
problem.

By 2008, they expanded to 800 universities.

In 2008, they decided to go beyond their niche. Launched their paid spell-checking simple WYSIWYG editor,
Grammarly (you could copy and paste text into it).
They were upselling to their current customers - universities.
And asked customers for feedback to improve the product.

2010: Achieved 300,000 students as registered users and 250+ universities as customers.

2012: $10 million in revenue a year.

2013: Decided to change their approach - rather than bringing users to Grammarly, they wanted to bring
Grammarly to everywhere people write.
Launched plugins for Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Unlike Microsoft Word’s spell checker, which only scanned for obvious spelling and grammar mistakes,
Grammarly handled everything — from contextual spelling to style.

Result: achieved 2,326% revenue growth from 2009, with over 3 million registered users.

2015: Launched their free browser extensions for Google Chrome and Safari. The company switched to a
freemium consumer model.

2016: Launched their free browser extension for Firefox.

2017: Grammarly’s free Chrome extension alone has over 8M active users.
