MODULE 2: DRUG NAMES, FORMS, AND ROUTES OF DRUG ADMINISTRATION

I. Introduction:

Each drug may have a chemical name, a generic name, and a trade name.
Medications are provided in several different forms and may be administered
by several different routes. Parenteral medications are those administered by
injection. Parenteral routes includes intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, Z-
track technique, intravenous, and intraosseous. Advances in drug administration
therapy continue to enhance safety, increase accessibility to sites, promote
patient mobility, and improve patient adherence. The nursing process should be
followed when administering medications.

1.1 Goal and Objectives:

Upon completion of this module, the student is expected to:


1. Recognize the names of the drugs such as the chemical, generic, and brand names
2. Differentiate forms and routes of drug administration.
3. Analyze the nursing interventions related to administration of medications by various
routes
4. Apply the nursing process to the administration of medication.
