Environmental Science Notes

Recycling reduces waste sent to landfills and the need for landfill space. It also decreases pollution, conserves natural resources, and lowers costs for waste disposal and extraction of new raw materials. However, recycled materials may not always be economically viable compared to virgin materials, and recycling operations require space and funding that are not always available. Some recycling can even cause environmental harm if not done properly.

Corporate social responsibility

Recycling is defined as the collection and separation of materials from the waste stream
and processing to produce a marketable and resalable product

Advantages
+ Reduces waste from landfills and the need for landfill waste
+ Reduction of waste disposal cost
+ Reduction of pollution, air pollution from extracting raw material ( extraction
industries)( producing process)and pollution in the environment from poor waste
disposal.
+ Burn less fossil fuels
+ Reduction in the demand for recycling…will reduce the production of goods and the
associated energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases
+ Reduction in the use of non renewable resources ( conserves non renewable
resources) this also reduces the reliance of raw material from a single country or a
group of countries.

Disadvantages
+ The production of recycled materials is not determined by the demand but the
production of waste. This causes economic problems since the supply of recycled
products cannot respond directly to changes in demand
+ Recycled products has to compete with virgin materials all ready established in the
market
+ Space must be available to store material to be recycled which may be limited in both
urban and domestic environments
+ Recycling may require sponsorships which is not be readily available to be able to
operate
+ Recycling of some materials may be detrimental to the environment.
+ Improper recycling of vehicle batteries
+ Some material recovery may not be environmentally beneficial since energy and
resource consumption may be greater than simply new material .
