Asynchronous Activity - Respiratory System (Lec)

The document outlines a learning plan for a lesson on the respiratory system, including 7 activities to describe respiratory anatomy, discuss tracheostomy landmarks, identify airway and lung structures, describe ventilation and gas exchange mechanisms, and explain the role of surfactant and lung function tests. The intended learning outcomes are to describe normal respiratory structure and physiology and explain physiological basis of respiratory alterations.

Ma’am Leila de Villa Masajo Year Level/Section: BSN 1-4 Schedule: MWF

LEARNING PLAN DETAILS

Week No: __4__ Duration: 1 week Lesson No: __4__ No of Hours: _ 3 _

LESSON/TOPIC: Respiratory System

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Describe the normal structure and physiology of respiratory system.
2. Explain the physiological basis of alteration in respiratory system

Activity:

1. Describe the anatomy of the larynx. (10 pts)

- Called the Voice Box
- Short passageway that connects the pharynx and trachea.
- Walls are supported by nine pieces of cartilages
- 3 paired cartilages|3 single pieces of cartilages
- 3 Cartilages(single): Thyroid Cartilage(Adam’s Apple), Epiglottis(Leaflike part), Cricoid
Cartilage(ring of cartilages).
- 3 Cartilages(Paired): Hyoid bone, False Vocal Cord, True Vocal Cord, Corniculcate
Cartilage, Arytenoid Cartilage, Trachea
- Glottis: Space between the Vocal cords in the Larynx
2. Discuss briefly the objective of tracheostomy and identify the landmarks for tracheostomy. (10
pts)
- Tracheostomy is an incision in the trachea creating a new opening for are to enter.
Landmarks: 1st Tracheal Ring(High Level), 2nd Tracheal Ring(Mid-level), 3rd Tracheal
Ring(Low-level)
3. Identify the structure of the airways and lungs (10 pts)
CONDUCTION PASSAGES
- Nose
- Nasal cavity
QF-ACD-027

- Oral Cavity
- Pharynx
- Larynx
- Trachea
- Bronchi
- Bronchioles
RESPIRATORY PASSAGES
- Respiratory Bronchioles
- Alveolar Duct
- Alveoli
- Alveoli sacs
4. Describe the mechanism of ventilation. (present in diagram; 20pts)

5. Describe the role of surfactant in maintaining the alveolar stability. (10 pts)
- Pulmonary surfactant, which is inadequate in the premature infant, modifies surface tension during the
act of breathing and is necessary for maintenance of alveolar stability
6. Describe the gas exchange across the alveolar capillary membrane. (present in diagram;
20pts)
-
7. Describe lung function test. (10pts)
- Lung function tests (also called pulmonary function tests) include a variety of tests that check how well

the lungs work. The most basic test is spirometry. This test measures the amount of air the lungs can
hold. The test also measures how forcefully one can empty air from the lungs.
